China starting to flex it muscles in the Indian Ocean.

CHINESE warships have entered the Indian Ocean, marking a significant shift in regional power. They’re there to keep India away from Beijing’s interests in the strife-torn Maldive Islands.

And their presence has implications for Australia.

Naval posturing is nothing new. Gunboat diplomacy has been a major player in great power games of thrones for centuries.

But it is odd for it to be played out so close to home.

A scattering of pristine coral islands in the Indian Ocean is becoming the next flash point between New Delhi and Beijing.

The Maldives islands are in the throes of a constitutional crisis.

The little democracy has traditionally been part of India’s “sphere of influence”. And the eastern Indian Ocean is, of course, of significant strategic importance to Australia.

I am not really sure what is the deal in Maldives apparently the Chinese sent their warships to deter the Indians from sending their troops in the resort Island to quell some constitutional crisis.

Now I wonder would win in a Naval engagement in the Region both countries have Aircraft carriers but India has been operating them much longer.

Could it end up like a mini Midway in favor of the Indians!

@GhostZ06 you are the technical war man here what is the tale of the tape?

India's tri-service war games in the Indian Ocean coincided with a Constitutional crisis in the strategically located island nation Maldives. It was apparently this exercise that forced China to abort a naval mission reportedly aimed at containing New Delhi's influence over the troubled country.

New Delhi (Sputnik) — In a first of its kind, India recently conducted a massive exercise in the Indian Ocean involving its army, navy, air force and coast guards. The extensive exercise saw the participation of all operational ships, submarines and aircraft of the Indian Navy, along with men and equipment of the Indian Army, all types of aircraft of the Indian Air Force and ships and aircraft of the Indian Coast Guard. The Indian defense ministry claimed that the war games were aimed at threat perceptions of a two-front war, i.e. simultaneous combat with China and Pakistan.

Chinese navy growing too big.

U.s. needs to send the navy into space.
Star command.

First you need to break a treaty that has been in effect for over half a century.

Which western nation, without having a clear and present danger to their existence, has the political will to do it?

The protests alone would be (forgive the pun) out of this world.

The ensuing arms race would open up a new host of Unknowns.

On the contrary, it seems like the presence of Chinese ships had given pause to India about intervening in Maldives. For now, the pro-Beijing government seems to has escaped any serious consequences from declaring rule by decree.

In terms of naval power, China has a decent lead on everyone in Asia. I'd almost say they're second to USN, but they need more time to develop proper training and tactics with all the new toys. Indian navy is modernizing as well, but not at the same pace as China due to bureaucratic red tapes.

Yeah but the Chinese fleet has to turn back to avoid further escalation as the Indian Navy is conducting a Military exercise, safe to say the Chinese will get their nose bloodied if they try to mess with the Indians in their backyard kinda ridiculous and un-calculated for China to send in some ships only to be turned back.

This sounds like more of a political stunt by the communist party and realize it could not turn out so well for them.

The Chinese Military is getting bigger but I think it is overstated it has yet to be seen if they will be even close to USNs capabilities which currently operates like 8 supper carriers vs China's two. Not to mention the USN started operating F35s from a WASP class Amphibious assault ship and the USN has many of those mini carriers considering the capabilities of the F35, USNS ability to project airpower at sea increased.

Waits for China to declare glorious victory against India in their state media with clips from battleship movie as proof.

The Chinese fleet in the Indian Ocean consisted of roughly half a dozen ships. If it took majority of Indian navy strength in combination of its air force to deter a small Chinese naval detachment, then that should tell you the capability gap between the two countries. Besides, China had a constant presence in Indian Ocean since the Somali piracy began to pick up around 2005. I'm not sure if they got "turned back" as much as a regular rotation, as they still have more ships based in Djibouti.

Compared to USN, everybody else is far behind. China is currently a distant second. With that said, China has also surpassed others in terms of naval capability and the gap is growing wider by the year. India is not catching up to China, but rather falling behind. The Maldives incident showed that India's influence upon its neighbors are waning, and surely not a sign of victory. Those that have the biggest coin purse and stick gets to shape the world, and India is lacking on both compared to China.

China has indeed surpassed a lot of countries in terms of Military development they will soon match the US in Weapons sale.

Look at this Helicopter some criticts dub as the "Sino - Hawk" it will be their equivalent of the black hawk but its much more cheaper.

I see them being the alternative to Russian and US weapons market.
