I guess the Venezuelan effect is doing its work and scared people into continuity.

Some things to ponder is.

1.- The communist candidate is extremely well-educated, so maybe the accusations of communist were the product of his younger days? but then again Trotsky and Lenin were also educated.

2.- Communism seems to be a symptom, not a disease, when income inequality, crony capitalism and the closing of doors to personal growth run rampant, it seems that people vote out of anger and they think things cant get worse.

3.- Venezuela may be the most visual example of the failure of communism, since there is a lot of openess in its society and we see exactly what its going on and how its spiraling towards failure.

Has there ever been a communist party/candidate that won a fair election?

It would seem that authoritarian regimes happen when despair set in. Colombia, perhaps, does not see itself as so hopeless that Communism is seen as the answer to those maladies?

Or more likely the nearly 1 million Venezuelan refugees make them see the lies of communists?

Certainly possible. A casual look through history shows us that desperate people tend to support authoritarian regimes, both far-right and far-left. Perhaps the people of Colombia are saying to themselves, "Bringing one of those into power seems like a bad idea." Those that are capable of making such a choice about extremists are themselves not desperate enough to accept the terms of such a regime.

I really thought Trump's praise and high regard for Un was going to turn things around and make communist dictatorships cool and popular again. Sad!

Are we deliberately misusing communism and socialism for the thread schtick, or do I really need to point out that Venezuela wasn't a communist state?

They were state capitalists who hedged their entire economy on oil. They were closer to the middle eastern petrostates than they were to even the USSR.

Socialist, yes. Communist, no.

Chavez got into power legitimately. So did Allende.

Allende was socialist not communist. He was painted as a communist by the US though.

Good, we don’t need communism to take root in Latin America.

Yeah or we'd have to sell weapons illegally to a foreign power in the Middle East so we could fund right wing death squads who kill tens of thousands of innocent people. America would never do that

Ummmm, did I ever say that I support that?

lol at "right wing death squads." What nonsense.

The US did trained and supported the formation of death squads to fight against Soviet trained and supported guerrillas.

My objection is to "right wing" death squads.

You pointed out a fact that is often overlooked when we look back at our interference in regions. Often times, these regions are the playgrounds of multiple world powers. The world is certainly all fucked up from all the meddling, but the story of how our world came to be has many authors.
