COMPETITION LOG - 2017 S&C Deadlift Comp

If you can hit a deadlift PR in 4 weeks, which is 4 deadlift workouts for most people
I know I'm not most people because my first workout was on May 12th, my starting 1rm video was June 2nd, and I deadlifted five more times between those days.

Tom Martin deadlifts 800+ 3x/week.

He wins.

Actually, that just supports my theory that most people under-train the deadlift.

He also PRs pretty much every time he touches a barbell. So, that debunks your original statement....

I mean, he has elite genetics and resources on his side. And legal steroids lol.

But yes, I would agree that training the deadlift more than once a week can be just as beneficial as training the other lifts more than once a week.

That CNS though???

I guess this as good of a time as any to ask this. In your experience, do you feel more fried after a deadlift session or a squat session? I never understood why people always talk about deadlifts being so taxing and to avoid multiple days, yet they are ok with squats several times a week. A volume squat session kills me more than anything else.

Shit. Squats to me are far more grueling. I have never thought twice about deadlifting multiple times a week. When I pulled my best DL in Feb 2016 I was training it very often. HOWEVER, I just beat that PR, pretty easily I might add with not having DLed (anything significant) since then.

You were working more on squat, and that led to a deadlift PR?

I find squat more taxing, I don't really do accessory work on squat day.

I started Front squatting as my main squat movement due to the fact that I knew I couldn' push myself with back squat having access o only 300Lb, but I knew I could continue to progress on FS because my PR was only 275.

A guy I know who's a pretty respected coach in these areas named Paul Oneid once said in a blog post that he was working on certain movements because they were movements that he could not lift a lot of weight with and that they had helped him improve on the stuff he was good at even though he had taken a break/rest from those main movements. This, I believe is pretty basic but the way he put it was he best explanation of what assistance work should mean.

Lol thankfully the whole "deadlifting is worse for your CNS than squatting" has been put to rest.

I've had squat workouts that have left me wrecked the next day, and I've had deadlift workouts that have left me wrecked the next day. Can't think too much about that stuff.

Doing things multiple times per week, however, intensities and volume become a little more important.

It's also all about what your body has adapted to.

After everything I've ever tried, Madcow was always the best. However the toll it took on my body after a few rounds was pretty significant. I liked the full body routine and so Daily Undulating Progression has become my go to. And I'm told its the best for the general "working dad"

I've shopped locally for a coach, and haven't been impressed with anyone available nearby. I'm thinking about hiring an online coach to take a look at some things for me, help with a program, etc.

Anyone ever had online coaching? Is it helpful, do you recommend anyone in particular? I'm considering contacting Ben Pollack, but it's worth seeing if anyone here has suggestions before I drop $300.

I suppose first I should write a check to @JimRussel for helpfully pointing out that everything I do sucks... The nice thing is that being terrible is a good starting point, I can expect to improve from there with a little direction. I've also considered Mike T., Chad W. Smith, etc. but any info anyone has will help me out.

@Cmart
My honest opinion would be to look up Paul Oneid. He's really good. Otherwise I've heard Jordan Moffit is taking online clients as well. For both of them, tell them Doug from lift for kids referred you. Might not get you a deal but it's nice for them to know I care! LOL

They're not going to cost you the big bucks of CWS, but they're just as good.

+1 PaulOneid. Great guy, used to train with him back in Ottawa.

Squats and pulls equally tax my CNS. Maybe a slight edge to pulls.

Thank you! I will look into both. I'll share what I find.

edit -- I'm hitting dead ends trying to contact Paul Onead. He looks to be employed at a place called Manulife as a functional rehabilitation specialist, his former website seems to be down, and I can't find contact info for him. I'll move on to the next possible choice unless you know a way for me to get in touch with him.

@Cmart I'd be interested to know. I'm unsure if Jordan is actually taking clients. He posted something a while back about taking online clients, but he has since been working very hard with Bacon and Barbells, his apparel co. But Paul, as Toonie will concede is top notch!

Your obsession and continuing to mention me in every post when it's completely irrelevant is cute.

That response took you longer than it usually does, even when what I'm posting has nothing to do with you.
