CTE... If anyone can add to this or learn from it.

I read some study that says CBD oil was shown to reduce the swelling that actually causes CTE if smoked immediately after trauma. It was also shown to have a "neuroprotective" effect for future concussions. It also blocks a neurotransmitter that causes brain cell death after a concussion. Can it undo damage done through years of fighting? No. But it can "protect" your brain studies show and I wish more fighters knew this and took advantage of it.

I have looked into this, and I gather (no real science, just speculation) that CTE can be alleviated by CBD Oil, in that it fighters can prevent the long term and destructive traits of CTE, but it doesn't help a fighter's chin when it gets dented by being KO'd multiple times.

I think every combat athlete should be on it.

Very interesting! And new to me. Do you have a link of this study? Nate Diaz said he vaped to reduce pain and inflammation

Not sure about long term, but I used to really struggle to focus in lectures the day after hard sparring sessions. Had a coach who believed that 100% was the only way to train, so we were always fucking each other up. Got to the point where I had to stop training as it was affecting my study.

Went back to it years later after I'd graduated, different coach though with smarter training.

Mezger seems like a really good person, too. He stepped in to defend a lady against a knife-wielding attacker a few years ago and got stabbed--but sent the attacker to the hospital with arm and facial fractures. What gets me is how the same people here who say "the UFC needs to do something about CTE!" are the same ones dying to see fights like Matt Brown vs Chris Condit. Once fighters are past their primes, I'd rather see them retire--especially if they've taken a lot of damage.

Pains me to imagine what a fighter like Shogun will feel like in twenty years. Or someone like Dan Henderson. These guys have taken a ton of damage. For our entertainment. All these older fighters should/should've hung em up maybe a couple years sooner but who are we to stop any of them?

I'm from Rio and can confirm this.
Most of the time you can't even tell that he's speaking portuguese. His brother(Ninja, former MMA fighter)is even worse.

Not sure if it's from CTE tho.
Ninja's brain damage is likely directly related to his fight with Kharitonov.

Lol how could I forget that?

Just to be clear I didn't want to offend him by no means.

The fact that this dude overcame extreme poverty with a really low IQ and managed to step in the most competitive MMA event of the world just show how brilliant and hard worker the guy is.
Nothing but respect.

Is it true he was so poor his family had to eat animal feed?

CTE is one of the reasons why I don't train with people who go hard in sparring. I don't want brain damage cause I don't have brain cells to spare.

That's just sad to watch man. It's kind of got me scared about my past playing football. I know I had several concussions. I hope only playing from 10-18 wasn't enough to do permanent damage.

I'll add to it - realize if you're picking this as a profession, your opponent is allowed to drive elbows into your face and head.If your palms aren't flat on canvas and weight bearing, your opponent is allowed to knee you into oblivion. Listen, I love this sport and have been watching for the better part of 20 years but it's not for everybody. It's brutal---- Ive seen football players say " nah, I don't watch that UFC stuff - to brutal for me"

My candidate for WMMA fighter to suffer from CTE in the future is Cat Zingano. She already admits that she suffered major brain injury in her fight against Amanda Nunes. Ate a lot of shots because she never had good strike defense to begin with Cat's now in her mid 30's with slowing reflexes the next time she faces a hard hitting striker it's going to be target practice and she's going to take an absolute beating.

The end result be her slurring words, have memory problems among other things by the time she's in her mid 40's.

This is why i don't like the idea of chicks fighting. They can learn to hit hard, very hard -- but their defense usually sucks and their skulls, and neck aren't strong enough to absorb the punishment women can dish out. They also often fight recklessly.

The talent pool is thin in women's MMA so you're always going to get mismatches with absolute killers taking on newbs.

CTE this, CTE that.

Death is inevitable. Not everyone has to live a 'long' life. Sure humans aren't meant to take punches to the head, but hell we aren't meant to masturbate to porn either, or even sit on a chair for 9 hours a day working in some cubicle while staring at a computer screen.

I'm not downgrading the affects of CTE - it is very serious.

so to you all bad things are equivalent right? if i go to bed without brushing my teeth now and again, thats just as bad for me as stepping in front of a train, since i'll die in the end anyway?

great philosophy man, you should start a cult. nah not a cult, maybe a podcast tho

On the other hand there is some evidence that women's brains recover better from concussions, take less permanent damage.

someone or some ppl will choose $ over grey matter all day everyday

what makes a womens brain d9ifferernt than a mans? there made of the same shit

You can't heal from damage already taken. Some just bleed fighters might seem fine now but they already have the damage done that will affect their brain function and health in the future. You can't just take a year off and everything will be ok. That isn't how this CTE works. After it happens, it is permanent. You can't avoid it.
Add anything if you can. There are a lot of questions and theories about all of this.

Mods, this is off topic, but if you can let it ride a bit?
Imagine Justin Gaetje in a few years, damnnn son

In another 10 years I believe lots of fighters will be showing symptoms.

Hopefully they are more careful in sparring and don’t go full chute boxe since most time is spent in the gym!

Do you have a link? I would be interested to see it.

Seems the opposite is true
