Den of Thieves - upcoming crime thriller with Gerard Butler (UPDATE: Saw it tonight, it's great!)

Lol Skip's a film critic now? Color me surprised. Hopefully his movie taste isn't as shit as his sports opinions.

Well I already know Den of Thieves is a shitty movie

You know how I know that? Cause Gerard Butler is in it

I didn't enjoy Heat all that much though, it felt almost sterile.

This confirms your shit tier taste in movies.

Read that^^^ to yourself in the most condescending sherdog tone you can imagine.

Says the guy who thought Casino was better than Goodfellas?

-Joe Pesci is like salt, in moderation he can take your movie from good to great but you can not base half of your movie on him.
-How much sympathy can we really have for a guy who marries a hooker and then gets fucked over? The movie presents hours and hours worth of face palms.
-The acting at the end when they kill Pesci and his little brother is horrible.

You may have a personal connection to the setting in Casino but I don't.

I was already intrigued by what I've seen of the presentation thus far. I hope that I can see it soon and give a report back.
Thanks for the heads up! :)

I have heard a rumor that like five people think Casino is better than Goodfellas. Hilarious if true.

Goodfellas is obviously > Casino.

I just got back from this one and it is damn good!

We've seen heist films before and this movie does recycle some common tropes, but it does it so well and does it in ways that feel new and fresh. I was locked in from beginning to end and never felt bored. If you think this is just going to be some generic crime thriller with Gerard Butler and 50 Cent then you're wrong.

The cast all does a good job, though at the end of the day, this really is Gerard's movie and everybody else is just living in it. He turns in a great performance--one of the best performances of his career, no doubt--as the slightly unhinged cop, husband and father who is married as much to the job as he is to his wife.

The action, when it occurs, is also stellar. From the opening theft of an armored truck to a shoot-out in the finale, it is all expertly executed. But the film really is not as much of an action film as the trailers might have you believe. It is a character-driven story about two groups of men on opposite sides of the law, all of whom are rugged and hard-edged and on a collision course toward each other.

Having now actually seen the movie, I cannot BELIEVE the RT score is as low as it is. It makes no sense to me at all. The majority of the critics must have had their heads so far up their asses that they couldn't see the screen well enough to understand what they were watching. I just don't get how someone could watch this film and come away feeling like it's not well-made.

At least some of the critics know what's up though. A few positive quotes:

Personally, I'm giving it an 8/10. I suspect it won't do great financially, but I really hope I am wrong about that. Everyone involved deserves for this to be a success.

@VitorReem, @Dusty Rhodes, @Strychnine, @BayAreaGuy, @Dragonlordxxxxx, @DeepCover, you guys expressed some interest in this one. Y'all should definitely give it a look.
I could tell from the trailer that this movie was appealing to a certain demographic, and that critics would accordingly shit on it (somewhat irrespective of its merits)

To me there are so many films that try to be Heat and fail that unless another Town comes along (where even people who hate these kinds of movies have to grudgingly admit it's good) it's hard for me to get up for it.

I will probably Netflix this though. I have watched more than a few "okay" action movies with a charismatic lead performance.

I would say that of all the Heat imitators, this is definitely one of the better ones I have seen. I really don't get why the critics are being dickheads about it.

Also, isn't it weird that basically any movie that has armed bank and/or armored car robberies is now considered a Heat imitator? Will it always be that way? I mean, at the end of the day it's a pretty generic story concept.

I remember when people were saying Dark Knight was like the new Heat because of that shitty 20 second robbery at the beginning

The Bank Job got away with it.

I think the comparisons are inevitable, but it is kind of a funny how a film came in and hijacked--dare I say heisted?--an entire sub-genre.

Was that that movie with Jason Statham? I don't remember it being very Heat-like.

It wasn't but it was in that genre.

Which is what I was getting at, not everything is lumped together in one giant macro bin that cover those two check points.

Was there even a big armed robbery scene in that film? Seems I remember Statham like tunneling underground or something.

I remember thinking Tom Sizemore was going to be a big time hollywood actor for years to come

I really liked Sizemore as well. Only thing I've seen from him in like the last 10 years was his bit in Sunny (Which was great)

He's on the USA show Shooter with Ryan Phillipe. Pretty big role, too.

At least that's the case in Season 1. I never got past maybe the seventh ep or so.

a couple years ago Ive seen him in some movies that should have never been made and was low budget as hell
I think I read on here suggesting that Tarantino give him a role for a comeback, that would be fun to see

Is stealing stuff from a safe not robbery?

Well the keyword is ARMED robbery.

I'm talking about movies that involve hold-ups. Basically if your movie involves a small crew of well-trained thieves in masks with automatic weapons, and the target is a bank or armored car, then it's going to be called a Heat imitator/knockoff/ripoff. Even though Point Break did it before Heat did.
