Do you all agree McGregor has been the most influential fighter in MMA history ??

He's been really influential in influencing me to dislike Conor McGregor.

they were crucial for the business back then, completely agree. Just saying it is in a completely different scale right now World > USA
not even mad, cuz you acutally put in work for your OP.

Yes its a different scale because it was built slowly. Its not like MMA didnt exist before Conor. He built upon a foundation that those older fighers laid. Yes that foundation isnt as big but you have to understand that MMA was still niche back then.

One of the reasons UFC got the Spike TV deal for TUF 1 was because Chuck and Couture where the head coaches. Spike would never signed that deal if they didnt have some stars to headline it.

And as we keep going, GSP built upon that, Ronda, built upon that, and so did Conor. And the next big star will reap the benefits of the fighters before him.

thats because no one of them is influential by itsfelf

It's because of time and place. Helio didn't have the exposure back then, yet plenty knew of Royce after 1 night, and their family chose him instead of better practitioners. While Rorion's work was more behind the scenes and Rickson did his thing in Japan.

All of them are more influential to MMA than Conor.

Said Sherdogger who signed up in or after 2013.

Not a diss , but how can someone who became a fan of MMA because of Conor have any perspective of influences before him? There is juts no perspective .

Many are only fans of Conor and NOT the sport of MMA, ya know the ones who say " hey I train UFC", have no idea of One FC, Bellator or most top Fighters or even Champs outside the FW, LW divisons.

Question being is Mac an influence on the sport of MMA or another Celebrity?

Will most of these fans go once Mac retires ?

How many only watch Conor fights and no other cards?

His celebrity IS HUGE. Not sure on the lasting effect on the sports growth. Even know look how sad PPVs are without him on a card .

Guys like Chuck, GSP, Forest, Fedor, Wanderlei and Silva enticed a huge amount of guys to start taking up MMA. Chuck influenced Conor for example , these guys moved the sport ahead in leaps and bounds from where it was before them. Sure Conor could have the same effect but take the base line of viewers from a before and after and look at straight percentages of growth of the sport and expansion.

Not sure if Conor is an anomaly , great fighter and world wide celebrity for sure.... But is he moving MMA forward?

nice response, we would know for sure how big of an influence Conor was for MMA just in the future years

Exactly, MMA fighting styles is/was influenced by "greater influencers" than McGregor.....like Royce Gracie, GSP, Sugar Ray, Saenchai (Muay Thai), etc.

I disagree but if that's your opinion, so be it.

He's obviously a star, you didn't need to post all of those pictures (scrolling my ass off here...). What influence has he had exactly? Stating this in words would've been more effective than all those pictures. I would think royce gracie had more of an influence on the sport.

He has:
- Entertaining fight style
- Big wins
- 2 title holder
- Biggest PPV events
- Biggest mainstream impact
- 1/2 of sherdog threads being about him

He has not:
- The biggest win streaks
- Title defenses
- The most well rounded style
- Unbeaten record
- Fights right now, very unactive

but thats not what this thread is about (because I know every Conor hater gonna say that)

The thread is about the most influential fighter in MMA history. It is Conor?

Yes he is really influencing young kids to be like him and drink a lot alcohol especially his whisky and fuck health life and training. That is what he was doing all this time since he won that fight against Alvarez

Everybody isn't now a trash talker. And Conor didn't invent trash talking. Holy fuck, man.
Please. If you can't see how the landscape has been changed in both the octagon interviews and pre fight pressers, then you haven't been watching mma very long. There have always been trash talk, but not to the level McGregor took it, and nowhere near as ridiculous. Now everybody and their manager is talking on twitter or instagram.
But if that's all you got from my post, I don't really care.

In the last 5 years yeah but a lot of negative shit too, obviously it's Royce Gracie overall.

Royce Gracie

Conor-McGregor-mugshot.jpg

Really influential for 12 yo kids and casuals who don't know shit about mma or combat sports; the same people who bought rhonda's hype. But he's worse by showing his manlet complex to the point he almost hurt a lot of people during the bus incident. Please TS, save your nuthuggery for someone else.

Yes.

He inspired a whole bunch of pop culture fans to by his PPV and pretend they actually like and follow MMA when he fights....

It's like saying Giussepe Meazza is more influential than Cristiano Ronaldo, total nonsense

No. It's like saying Zidane, Pele or Maradonna are more influential than Ronaldo which is 100% true.

Many seem to be confusing fame with influence. McGregor is amongst the most famous, but isn't even remotely influential compared to the men who built this sport.

The Gracie's, Couture, Liddell, Fedor, Tito, GSP, Anderson, and Forest amongst others were all much more influential in the rise of MMA.

Hmmm... Have u ever heard about those who built this sport at the very beginning....?

Not even close...Royce Gracie is the most influential person in MMA history. Perfect example: When a mediocre fighter was beating McGregor on the feet, McGregor attempted a "shot" to take that fighter to the ground. This is called "Grappling", influenced by Gracie as a means to tie up your opponent, avoiding damage, and ultimately getting him to the ground to set up submissions. Unfortunately for McGregor, that mediocre fighter was also influenced by Gracie, using Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to control McGregor, mount him, and eventually submit him by rear naked choke. Right now, MMA practitioners all over the world, including Connor, are practicing grappling and submissions, influenced by Royce Gracie, the real GOAT (imo).
