Just picked it up and super pumped to get started. FInishing up Ys VIII, so I should be able to start next weekend or so. There hasn't been a good fantasy turn based JRPG in a while. Persona 5 was great, but the present day setting doesn't quite scratch the same itch. Ni No Kuni II was a great fantasy JRPG, but the action oriented combat system was too button mashey. I get that the turn based battle system is dated, but it just brings me back to the days Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior back on the NES when I was a kid.
Really? Persona 5 gave me the same feeling of playing rpgs when i was younger, i absolutely loved it.
My only complain is that i fucking hate silent protagonists
The golden cactuses show up with the regular cactuses in the desert area outside the horse racing city. That's a good place to do some grinding if you're in the mood because metal slimes show up and give 2k expAbout 10 hours in and this game is exactly what I wanted it to be in a turn based fantasy JRPG. Really digging the crafting system and reworking items to give them a stat boost. Was initially bummed that they minimized save scumming by putting the forge on a cool down after reloading a save, but once I hit Hotto campsite I found a guy that sold all of the material for a Feather Cap for cheap to farm Perfectionist Pearls. I would much rather have a reliable way to farm items then resort to save scumming, but those damn pearls were hard to come by!
So now I'm taking a minute to farm a bunch of pearls so I can upgrade at least all of my weapons and armor before I move on. Been trying to find a golden cactus for a quest, but those bastards are elusive.
Might have to check this out. I see people referencing Persona 5 itt. I actually just bought that game over the weekend. Its the first turn based game I've played since FF 8 / 10. I'm really digging the dark story. That said whats the difference between the two games? Whats the pace of the combat?
Once you find the Medal Academy there's a girl who will sell you pearls for 100 a pop, which I felt was kind of a cop-out, I currently have like 250.About 10 hours in and this game is exactly what I wanted it to be in a turn based fantasy JRPG. If you haven't tried FFXII I'd give that a try. It's probably my favorite Final Fantasy, lots to do and the best combat in the series.
Combat is very similar between P5 and DQXI since there isn't a ton you can really change up with turn based combat. There are some minor things here in and there that add a little verity like the DQXI Pep System and P5 and its All Out Attacks.
Story is obviously going to be very different with one being present day Japan and DQXI being in a traditional fantasy setting.
One thing that P5 has going for it that DQXI doesn't even come close to achieving is the Confidants and building relationships which lead to team mate buffs and other passive skills, while having great interactions with other people. Also the day to day time management system in P5 is really great and adds a level of depth that DQXI doesn't have.
All in all P5 has more going for it and is probably the better game, but I'm only like 10 hours into DQXI. I really like what I'm seeing, but it really seems like a straight forward JRPG. I really love that genre and this game hits all of the nostalgia feels.
Also, if P5 is your first Persona game you really should check out some of the earlier entries if you can. It's the prettiest one since it's relatively new, but from a story stand point and sheer enjoyment for me it went P4 > P3 > P5. I really enjoyed P5, but it was really missing something I can't quite put my finger on that didn't quite hook me.
Are p4 and 3 on PS4?
I thought they might have hit as PS2 classics, but I played them on my Vita so I never really pursued trying to get a PS4 version. If they are not currently on there now, I would be really surprised if there wasn't a future plan to get them on the PS4 as a remaster/port with how well P5 did sales wise.
Persona 4's plot revolves around your team chasing down a serial killer that's leaving bodies all over town. By far my favorite in the series.
Yeah, if it drops below 40 on Steam I'll pick it up, its a shame so few modern RPGs can reach that level.FFXII is my second favorite Final Fantasy, right behind FFVII. I had moved into a new house that didn't have high speed internet and it effectively ended my run in Ever Quest. I was fiending hard for an MMO when FFXII came out, and it had a lot of MMO aspects that I was missing to help wean me off of my MMO addiction.
Picked up FFXII the Zodiac Age recently on PS4, and will probably pick it up again that it was announced on the Switch recently.
