Thought you blokes might find this interesting. I'd never heard of it before and stumbled across this video. There's some interesting stuff going on here.

And some real-life matches:

^^ which shows they train at full resistance albeit with rules preventing strikes to the face. (Kicks appear to be fine).

Thanks for posting these judogi.

From what it says on their website http://www.gongkwon.com
it is a new martial art (est. 1996) but obviously with influences from many traditional styles. The grandmaster (guy in the first 2 vids) has trained in Taekwondo, Judo and Hapkido.

I liked what I saw (never seen it before) as they combine striking and grappling which is always good.

Only thing is I think that the no-face-strikes-rule changes how you can enter the clinch dramatically, which you can see in some of their entries IMO.
Also their ground work is good, but not quite as intricate as other styles. E.g.: In their sparring/ tournament there were no sweeps and the guard was always passed fairly quickly. Also the submission defense (not letting him get the arm) seemed a little on the weak side as well.

But all in all it was pretty interesting, def. some tough guys! Throws like that on hardwood???

My favourite technique was the arm bar with glasses in the 1st vid though. Gotta try that one!

well its a new name i havent heard before, buts its basically bjj/sambo light. hopefully we'll see some of these guys at tourneys and then we'll see how the style stacks up.

I haven't heard of these guys at grappling tournaments yet, but then again I am rather new. Never heard of this Gongwon Yusul until today but Yusul is the Korean word for Jiu Jitsu if you read the Chinese characters.

Wow ! a kneebar ! and a guillotine ! And what was that fancy move at the beginning where you hyper extend the elbow using your hips as the fulcrum ? Never seen that before...

It wouldn't surprise me if Brasil is called "gongkwon" in Korean...

edit: after seeing the chinese characters, gongkwon yusul actually means "karate jiu jitsu", which already exists. So they took their name from one place and their techniques from another.
Oh well, I guess BJJ is only Judo after all, so it doesn't really matter.

The website smacks of commercialism though.

^^how is that bad?
the instructor likes to make a living by teaching his art

whats wrong with this? gongkwon yusul takes the curriculum of bjj and teaches it to you without the bullcrap. ive got blackbelts in 2 other martial arts and have graded belts in other beyond those. but 10 to 14 years to get a bjj blackbelt?! are you for real?! bjj is nothing more than a moneyspinner and is designed to hook up students to an instructor so they pay them 10 years of fees. i did bjj for two years and within that time learned alot of the purple, brown and black belt curriculum also and it started to become blatantly obvious that bjj was running out of techniques, so what was i supposed to do for the next 8 years? I was told I had to practice them over and over while i kept paying the instructor?! what a crock of bull! I quit bjj and have spent the last 3 months doing gongkwon yusul and have learned more mma and bjj techniques, atleast to black belt equivalent on bjj, than i did doing mma and bjj here on the gold coast. it was only a mater of time before other arts started popping up and giving people value for money other than the machado, john b will, gracie monopolies. wake up people, your getting ripped off. on the matts im yet to tap out to any of the so called bjj experts.

LOL this post cracks me up.

looks like a slightly better version of hapkido, or a bastardized terrible version of MMA in the gi.

Lol at TMA in action. Here's an amazing insight ... you don't NEED a black belt. I know, hard to believe.

I suppose you would have quit wrestling or judo after 2 years as well, since you would have "mastered" them in that time. They DON'T EVEN HAVE BELTS in wrestling, can you believe it? The training never ends! It's a total moneyspinner, since you obviously are already a master wrestler after two years. After all, you "know all the techniques."

Go practice your kata some more, or whatever the Korean translation of "kata" is.

Lemme clarify that the vids look fine -- it looks like a decent MMA type version of gi grappling with strikes. I just think the whole "belts" attitude completely sucks, as if the color of your belt is more important than your training time and skill.
