There's nothing that casuals overrate more in fighting than "power". They see some new up and coming guy knock out few guys in a row and already go on and on about his supposed "power" that could KO anybody and see these guys as elite based on their power alone.

Then when these supposed power punchers face a solid opponent with a solid chin and defense, it turns out that their power wasn't anything special.

Francis Ngannou is a great example of that. They made him out to be some monster power puncher and even brought up some punching machine stats in the UFC institute. He knocked out two notoriously chinny guys and was suddenly the favorite against the HW champ Stipe Miočić based on his punching power alone, despite displaying obvious flaws in technique and never having his grappling and cardio tested.

When he finally fought Stipe his power turned out to be nothing special, he connected on Stipe few times but it didn't have much effect at all.

Any similar examples of fighters whose punching power was massively overrated?

Hendricks.

Dude was murdering mo-foz early, then couldn't punch his way out of a paper bag, post-USADA.

Is it fair to list Rumble here?

He had legit power but the casuals and some hardcores made him out to be some killer puncher that destroys everyone he touches.

I think he was the favorite going in the second DC fight despite losing the first encounter.

DC took his best shots like nothing and choked him out. Twice. Rumble then quit the sport.

Although I wonder in Hendricks' case if he did have great punching power early in his career (because pre-USADA) and only lost it after a more severe drug testing regimen became mandatory.

He was certainly laying out some top guys who were pretty tough.

No, Rumble's punching power is not overrated. But a MMA fight is about so much more than punching.

Connor.

rumble

once he gasses its pretty much over

Good call.

People legitimately thought he had a "touch of death" and punched harder than elite boxers and could KO Floyd in 1 round.

Then when he fought Floyd it turned out that under boxing standards he punches like a wuss. Floyd was literally laughing at Conor's girly punches that probably felt like tickling. He even asked him "when will you show me your power?" in between rounds.

He has a pretty good finish (tko) rate but his failings de-mystify any real 1 punch power that anyone should logically attribute to him. Nice reply, orange belt. You type fast as fuck.

Mike Perry.

Ponzinibbio took his best shots like a refreshing drink.

Conor McGregor. Kod a bunch of chinney and undersized fighters.

Joe Rogan - "Joanna is a world class amazing striker and everyone she hits drops, her combo's are lightning fast and her power is off the charts, her opponents just can't withstand. Shes amazing for sure, undoubtely the best striker we ever seen in womens MMA, she can knockout anyone''.

Joanna knocking everyone out LMAO, thats bullshit and total nonsense because she always goes to decision, 5 round decisions, shes a point fighter, her last 6 fights have gone to 5 round decisions before she lost to Rosey, there are no knockouts LMAO.

Everyone is the p4p greatest striker ever with Rogan if they are on a 1 fight win streak haha. His hype nonsense is beyond pathetic at this point

How could I forgot Bethe "The KO Artist" Correia... Rogan hyped her as the female version of Julian Jackson before the Ronda fight.

Rumble is one of the hardest hitters in MMA history. He's just not a young Foreman
