Free Speech - is this what you are defending?

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- A Ku Klux Klan group's request to burn a cross atop Stone Mountain in Georgia has been denied.

The Stone Mountain Memorial Association on Monday rejected the application from the Sacred Knights of the Ku Klux Klan to hold an Oct. 21 "lighting" ceremony. The application was submitted May 26.

The ceremony was proposed to commemorate a November 1915 cross burning on top of Stone Mountain that marked the KKK's revival. Crosses were burned there annually, decades ago.

A Stone Mountain Memorial Association statement says it condemns the beliefs and actions of the KKK and that its rules allow for the denial of a permit for an event that would disrupt park activities or "appears to represent a clear and present danger to public health or safety."

Free speech question. Somewhat.

Are you for or against allowing the KKK their rights to burn a big ass cross peacefully?
Bet you have no problem with the Black Hebrews talking shit on street corners to actual other races of people, but a few aging hillbillies burn a cross out in the sticks and suddenly everyone loses their shit.

The act of burning a cross has historically been associated with intimidation, violence and murder.

I think they're within their rights to deny this permit.

As free speech and expression -- sure. But im sure there's some fire codes that could be used to prevent it.

And if it's on public property I'd love to see some counter protesters show up and toast some marshmallows and hotdogs on it while having fun to really piss off the racial supremacist

Who cares, a bunch of guys in ghost costumes want to have a weird little ritual. Seems like you'd have to ban campfires and such too.

Good point. Religion his historically been associated with murder and genocide. Let's get rid of it as well.

If it is on their own private property then yes, it is free speech (probably, I'm not sure of any laws pertaining to this specific matter)
LOL at this sad attempt at a bait thread.
Nobody here supports the KKK or cross-burning, but TS knows this.

Obviously you and @splendica didnt read the post or you would realized it wasn't about free speech on anybody's private property..

I even wonder if planted posters are going to happen more and more to falsify forum activity in order to shut them down, control the narrative and further the totalitarian left's Marxist agenda.

Not even sure what this means unless you are referring to yourselves. My account is way older than either of yours.

Freedom of assembly? Sure.

But, The supreme court ruled against racist speech in 69, 92 and against homophobic speech in 2011. By performing the Seig Heil and demanding that racialised minorities vacate the country they are in violation of American law, should they make similar remarks or speech variants.
Source that a seig heil or homophobic speech is against American law?

This is a "how can free speech defend this free speech" thread.

Freedom doesn't have a but.

If we want freedom of speech, then we have to put up with views that we disagree with. There are several reason for this. The first is that we need free speech as an alternative to settling our differences with force. The second is that freedom of speech for all means freedom to criticize bad ideas, and hopefully persuading the other side. The third is that we need to consider what would happen if speech was not free, and only determined by those who are in charge. In other words, what happens when the other guy has the power. Do we then lose our ability to speak?

Use your words racist losers
Tell you fellow Communist thugs that.

Stone Mountain Park is privately operated. Next.

Burning a cross can sometimes be seen as intimidation, and thus not legal. I believe this is inconsistent and you should be able to burn any object you want if it's not any type of fire hazard and done in a place that allows open flames. American flag, the Bible, the Quran, a cross, this thread. Live and let live.

Yeah ok. I think we've already bent the restrictions of the 1st amendment towards leftists enough now.
But they can give permits on what is allowed to be done on their site. The exact history and use of burning a cross is what it is. As a person of color I find it both intimidating and reprehensible. There has been no other purpose of it historically but a negative one.

So take your BS analogy and shove it.

We have to tolerate a few knuckleheads and trolls to ensure free speech for you and I. This is very important.

You guys are completely wrong on why this was denied. I live in Atlanta and this is a really popular running and entertainment area on a really small mountain. You're not allowed to have fires up there period. You can't make a small fire to cook smores without the park going nuts. So of course when these idiots want to burn a giant cross, they are going to deny it. That's all this decision was.

They are more than welcome to go up to the peak and do some stupid fucking ceremony. They just can't start a massive fire in a place where you aren't allowed to have any fires.

Yep black people can walk around with rifles chanting black power and Hispanics can preach all the hate they want. It would be racist to attack them.

Progressives just need to flat out say it. They don't want white people to have free speech.
