GamerGate
Disclaimer: GamerGate does not, has not, and never will, endorse the harassment or abuse of anyone for any reason. Everyone should call out anyone who attacks, harasses, or abuses anyone.

What does GamerGate want?
In a phrase: Ethical Standards and Practices in the Gaming Journalism Industry.

GamerGate desires straightforward, honest coverage of the industry, such that anyone can read these outlets with the basic expectation that they are being told the truth. In an ideal world, every gaming outlet would adopt the New York Times' Standards and Ethics policies, but that is an unrealistic goal in the world of internet media. As such, we must be content with ethical policies that fit within the limitations. The Escapist, a gaming media site of some repute, has already adopted such a set of standards.

To put it in layman's terms:

Truth and fact must be treated with the respect they deserve. This means, at a minimum:
*Opinions are not to be stated as universal truths
*Hearsay is not to be reported as factual without corroborating evidence
*Assumptions and speculation are not to be reported as fact
*Intentionally misleading or inflammatory wording is not ever to be used, in headlines or elsewhere
*When in doubt, stick only to information that would hold up under examination in a court of law
*Editorials and other opinion pieces are to be kept separate from News pieces. Bias and opinion will always color a writer's work, but they should strive for as much objectivity as reasonably possible in the News. If they wish to share their opinion on the piece, something that should be encouraged, it should be done in a distinct space.
*There's nothing wrong with the News article including "And I think it's great/terrible/stupid/etc, click this link to find out why" or some variation thereof. It is only within the article proper that opinions are to be avoided.
*All journalists must be required to behave professionally within the public space. This includes but is by no means limited to:
*No irrational, emotionally-driven rants
*No insults, threats, or any of the other assorted childishness
*Engage the audience calmly, reasonably, and without rancor, or do not engage them at all
*Be aware when one is within the public space, especially any and all social media.
*Do not treat one's audience as an enemy
*Journalists must strive to be objective. No human can be truly impartial, but journalists must strive to the best of their ability to be above external bias, and to inform their readers when they cannot. Put simply, this means they must, at minimum:
*Recuse themselves from reporting news regarding subjects that they have a personal or financial link to
*Disclose any personal or financial connections to subjects they are giving opinion pieces on (Editorials, Op-Eds, Reviews, etc)
*Engage in honest and fair coverage. Consistency and the interest of/relevance to the audience must be the deciding factor in the decision to run a story.

GamerGate simply wants gaming media websites to adopt some variation on these policies, much like the Escapist has, and actively work to adhere to them. Nothing more and nothing less.

Why is it happening?
Over the last five years, the gaming media has grown increasingly politicized, all with the same political stance and agenda. It has become almost unheard of for a gaming news piece not to include at least a passing comment about a game being retrograde for not matching this stance, or for a game to be praised to the moon because it reflects the right politics. Many gamers are sick of it. Add on to this the claims of corruption, of censorship, of blacklisting, and of careers ruined, and these gamers have become incensed.

Gamers have been lied to, belittled, shamed, stifled, and held in contempt by the industry they created and continue to drive. Developers have been attacked, silenced, belittled, and forced to compromise their art by this same industry.

It has to stop. GamerGate is a grassroots movement by the gaming community to hold the press accountable for their actions and to demand better.

Where did it come from?
GamerGate is a recent, wide-ranging controversy that began in late August 2014 as a direct result of the seemingly corrupt and wildly unprofessional behavior of the gaming press. On August 16, Eron Gjoni, ex-boyfriend of developer Zoe Quinn published a blog on wordpress called The Zoe Post. In this blog, he alleged that Quinn cheated on him with several members of the video game industry, one of whom was a writer for Kotaku. This post created a substantial uproar in the gaming community. Some took the post as license to attack Quinn, while many, many others were incensed by the relationship and potential for conflicts of interest it presented in Grayson's reporting.

Overwhelmingly, the gaming press responded to this in a markedly different fashion from previous, similar allegations and began a campaign of censorship. On nearly every gaming-related website, from user-driven sites like Reddit and NeoGAF to contributor-driven sites like Kotaku, any discussion of the topic, or even topics almost completely unrelated, was quenched immediately and without question. Even a handful of 4chan's moderators came into play and tried to silence the discussion.

This nearly universal response and behavior pattern, wildly outside the normal bounds of the sites in question, made many people suspicious of collusion or conspiracy and questions began to be asked. Such as why it was considered acceptable for a professional journalist to have sex with a subject. Or why there was a nebulous network of financial support between developers and journalists through the use of websites like Patreon. Or even simply if ethical standards existed in the gaming journalism industry.

Major industry figures confirmed that these issues existed and insisted that they were not a problem. Then on August 28/29, 11 gaming news sites (Gamasutra, DailyDot, Kotaku, Polygon, and several others) published articles declaring some variation of 'Gamers are Dead' and that any and all calls for better journalism were made only as cover for 'neckbearded misogynerds' to harass women. This incensed a large portion of their audience and even reached well known actor Adam Baldwin, who coined the Twitter hashtag #gamergate upon his getting involved, which the movement has since adopted as its moniker.

In the ensuing weeks, gamers and the entrenched gaming press have been at odds over the issues of honest and ethical reporting laid out against claims of anonymous harassment and threats.

"Gamers are Dead" Articles:
As evidence of this corruption of gaming "journalists" banding together to push an agenda, within days of GamerGate, supposed "competitors" published "Gamers are dead" articles within 24 hours of each other. It is also very possible that a public relations firm with ties to many of the corrupt journalists helped push this through, and Leigh Alexander was the point person in all of this. Strong evidence that some gaming "journalists" are simply using the gaming industry to further their careers and personal agendas.

GAMEJOURNOPRO MAILING LIST
GameJournoPros is a private (but not secret) mailing list of 150 games journalists & some game company PR types. Genuinely inspired by JournoList, Kyle Orland of Ars Technica created the list a few yeasr ago. Since the first leaks, more and more information has come out pointing to collusion & cross publication pressure to control certain narratives and blacklisting of devs and journalists.

"Maybe we should just use this as an excuse to give more attention to her work... I know I've been meaning to review Depression Quest since its Steam release."

While the rest of the media has mostly ignored the issue of corruption in gaming media, very few websites are engaging in due diligence to get to the bottom of the real matter. One area where GamerGate has a lot of support is from game developers, people in the gaming industry who put in a lot of hard work and rely on creativity to make their products, only to have their work attacked by people pushing agendas. Here is their support.

I don't know why I'm so offended by the statement gamers are dead.

It's either because for a very long time, arguably my whole damn life, I've not only associated myself with this lifestyle and culture but also supported it with endless financial interest and even development work on both indie and major cycles. Maybe I'm insulted because it's an attack on a group of people I cherish and consider myself a member of, ah, a large and somewhat unmanageable family of misfits and creative types. It's the life I know and I love it and the people in it.

It's that or that the statement is offensive in a whole new level entirely. Outside of personal interest and offense the statement is grossly inaccurate and desperately misrepresented. I think the majority of my frustration stems from the fact it's a statement of wishful thinking being presented as fact. And it's a hopeless and empty wish. Mostly grounded in bigotry, sexism and racism against the one group of people you can say, do and act against without anyone giving a shit. Privileged white males. It's bullshit. The statement is a farce. Gamers and their economy are growing four times faster than the US Economy. Forbes did an article detailing the awe inspiring mass of numbers Leage of Legends pulls and its like 27 million a day under 65 million a month. You uave Clash of Clans yielding 1.5 million a day, and GTA5 and Destiny setting new standards for media and debuting IP's.

This is the era of the gamer. We aren't going anywhere and we won't be bullied with shame or fear for who we are and what we love. Don't surrender to social justice martyrdom. Let them gleefully self detonate in the public sector and be sure to not let them take you out alongway the way. This is a speed bump in our great future and history will remember this era as the golden years of gaming and the origin of the biggest industry to ever grace the civilized world.

The "Gamers are Dead" articles are why I jumped into GamerGate. Either there was some sort of collusion of like-minded people to purposely slander an identity they didn't like, or there were a bunch of lemmings ready to regurgitate whatever they heard in their echo chamber bubble world. It has to be one of the two, and either one is a disservice to logic and proof that gaming journalism sucked.

Speaking of the leader of those "Gamers are Dead" articles (or at least the most infamous one, Leigh Alexander):

Great post. I can agree entirely with everything you said. Gaming has been and will always be a part of who I am and those articles felt like a direct attack on something I've never viewed as being a malicious part of me. We have all dealt with assholes and trolls online but other than those instances gaming has been and will continue to be a positive melting pot of people getting together over a shared interest. Seems like these SJWs don't even understand the true concept of enjoyment.

That's an interesting point. Come to think of it, when's the last time you saw one of these people happy about something not pertaining to identity politics?

It's hard imagine them going through life being significantly happy. Must be hard living as a constant victim.

I agree with most of what you said but something has happened with the gaming community over the past 10-15 years that has left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm 40 now and I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 came out. Maybe it's just the internet and maybe it's just that people are way more entitled now a days than they've ever been, but gamers have gotten pretty whiney and demanding.

Personally I think this entitlement/divide started with the people who were/are torrenting games. They still act like they are doing nothing wrong. Now when people don't like the ending or certain aspect of a game they demand that the developers change it to their liking. I think these kinds of attitudes turn a lot of people off and in some respects I can see why developers have lost touch with the community.

I'm not against gamergate, nor am I really for it. I really just don't have a horse in this race. I do appreciate that you guys are trying to clean up gaming journalism.

Personally I don't consider myself a "gamer" by today's standards even though I've owned almost all of the consoles for the last 15 years. As I said I'm 40 now and I know there are a lot of people my age who still game regularly. I think there's just too big of a generational gap at this point to group us all together. I think most people my age look at the industry and life itself in a different way.

I totally agree. Things are moving so fast and people have lost sight of how far we've come in such a little amount of time. Next generation gamers are spoiled, whiny and demanding. Often not even thankful for the remarkable things they get to begin with, let alone a lot of the follow ups.

Personally I think this entitlement/divide started with the people who were/are torrenting games. They still act like they are doing nothing wrong. I used to torrent a lot of games. I didn't have a good job, and I couldn't afford my hobby so I'd go crazy torrenting stuff. But I never felt true enjoyment with a pirated product, I never felt the true achievement of beating something. Sharing your achievements and experiences and even time invested with a community is what makes a large part of gaming special for me. Being able to afford things now, and sadly to the detriment of my wallet I no longer bother with pirated software, it's just not fun, it's not apart of my giant and well earned steam category so everything feels cheap and black market when its outside of it. I actually even have a hard time buying games on Origin because of this. It's weird that it was the community itself that got me away from torrenting, even more so than my financial status.

I'm not against gamergate, nor am I really for it. I really just don't have a horse in this race. I do appreciate that you guys are trying to clean up gaming journalism.

I'd say I'm for it, Gamergate, but I've had a horse in this race for a long time. The truth is for me is that I've been watching feminism infect the academic, scientific and political sectors for the last two decades with extremely toxic and hateful rhetoric. Seeing them enter the gaming Industry was a step I anticipated and didn't dread but cringed at the idea of. They are very benign, obnoxious and loud but benign.

Personally I don't consider myself a "gamer" by today's standards even though I've owned almost all of the consoles for the last 15 years. I don't even know what classifies a gamer as a gamer to be entirely honest. I think chalking it up to someone who regularly buys and plays games is a fair statement. The generational gap is weird because in this industry the mediums of competition allow for a huge discrepancy in age. It's a mental sport more-so than a physical one so you could have in theory a twelve year old taking you to school and back. I kind of like it, I know that when I was twelve I thrived in it and was respected well beyond my years by elders because I not only had skills but the intelligence to back it up. I don't mind providing that same framework for youth coming up, so much of who I am and what I learned depended on this specific medium allowing me to jump well above my age group and thrive early on with adults.

Nailed It.

Before that article, it was a kind of funny situation with a butt hurt Ex unintentionally outing an inappropriate relationship.

I thought some Game Journalists got their hand caught in the cookie, taking advantage of their positions to have sex with girl developer (Developer is being generous).

I really had no idea how out of touch the entire gaming journalism industry was and that it was infested with feminists. When I say feminsts, I mean the hard core one and their SJW white knights. I had a different picture of a feminist before this went down.

But the Gamer's are Dead article was what sucked me into situation and opened my eyes to the cult of the hard core feminists. I know some very independent and successful women. They wouldn't identify with these psychos and/or condone these cultist actions for their own well being.

And thanks to Soda and all you others for the daily updates. I don't post that much, but I look into these threads daily for news.

So, thanks again.

^ What is that even supposed to mean? She obviously thinks it implies something negative or else she wouldn't word it like that, but the point evades me. Maybe some barrier to entry due to complexity? But there are lots of games that only a few of the buttons are important (and pretty much the entire pre-SNES retro library has only 2-3 buttons and a d-pad) and the whole tablet/smartphone design space is built around a lack of physical buttons.

EDIT: Wow, she's counting each directional on the d-pad as individual buttons for her count. 4 face + 2 bumper + 2 trigger + 3 utility + 4 directional.

Back away slowly, everyone.

This isn't surprising at all. Isn't she not even a gamer? Have you ever seen someone who's not a gamer try and play an FPS? It's laughable.

I think a study came out actually that said gamers have better quick decision making skills and hand eye coordination then most.

Back away slowly, everyone.

2 joysticks + 7 letters in "Brianna" = 9. There are 9 letters in GamerGate. Dual joysticks = Twin Towers.

15 buttons - 4 letters in Xbox = 11. There are 11 letters in "Praise GabeN".

GAMERGATE WAS BEHIND 9/11. WAKE UP SHEEPLE.
