HOA Nazis Hate America

Freedom!!!......?

Both systems have their failings, some people don't care for politeness and just leave scrap in their front yard etc. Also there are zones to our politeness, poverty zones have near zero, middle to upper middle class zones have the most, Upper class become their own thing.

An example of the enforcement in my village, after I'd settled in to the new house I got a gardener to sort the front garden, a neighbour stopped by to say how lovely it looked. Really it's just neat instead of shit and the neighbouring houses are probably nicer but it was her way of saying they'd been worried for a bit that we were total fucking oiks and she was glad we play ball.
It becomes a question of how to handle a select few then. Let's call it the bottom 10% of a group for the sake of conversation.

90% of the group will generally comply with the polite standard, as you pretty much evidenced in your anecdote. Your neighbors were worried, but you showed that you didn't need a rule to step up and get the yard looking nice. So should we make a rule to target those 10%, or should we just let them be? If you decide to let them be, yeah, they'll be obnoxious, and you'll just have to learn to live with it. But if you make a rule, then where does it end? You end up with rule after rule in all sorts of areas of your life, all attempting to enforce some standard upon you because someone else has a problem with the way that you live your life, keep up your home, etc. Eventually, you get to where we are now, and it's just silly. Look at some of the absurd rules and laws that are being proposed by members of this forum. We've built a carnival funhouse for ourselves, all smoke and mirrors that provide us with this illusion of control and safety, but it's just not real. We waste time, money, and energy into this facade, and I'm just generally sick of it.

Your neighbor understood the value of the carrot in the form of a compliment. In the angry US, we prefer the stick each and every time.

Then dont buy a house in an HOA. its a pretty simple concept.

So much hate for HOAs when no one os forced to buy a house there.
I intentionally avoided buying a house with an HOA.

HOAs can be a bitch.

Double edged sword.
can be really good. keeps a neighborhood looking nice which helps you with your property value..... and it can suck when you can't put an American flag out on your own house.

One of the neighborhoods here in Vegas has the General Manager making almost $300k a year which is a LOT more than the city manager of the entire city of Las Vegas makes. And the lions share of the revenue they create goes to salaries. I hate HOA's

In addition to the 277k the GM makes.....

  • Chief Financial Officer $189,162/year
  • Facilities Director $153,375/year
  • Community Association Manager $94,998/year
  • Activities Director $70,000/year
  • Web Administrator $61,350/year
  • Community Standards Manager $76,687/year
  • Community Standards Administrator $55,052/year
  • A Senior Staff Accountant $70,012, an Accounting Specialist $48,687 and a Payroll HR Coordinator $52,850 reported to the Chief Financial Officer.
  • An Executive Coordinator $53,170 reported to the General Manager

In Florida, the HOAs are all about the developer. A developer controls an HOA until 90% of the entire development has been sold. They often farm it out to a management company which puts heavy restrictions on everything and charges a high price to boot. The HOA rules exist solely to sell houses to unsuspecting dupes, aka you have to have green ass grass that is always mowed to the right length. In many subdivisions you can't have any cars parked on the curb or street, and they'll do routine sweeps and charge 50-75$ a pop for any violation. Basically, when a real estate agent is giving the grand tour to their mark, the developer wants everything to look perfect.

While the development hangs under that 90% threshold, the HOA has nothing at all to do with keeping homeowners happy and safe and everything to do with making the developers money. Once the 90% threshold is up, the developers pull out faster than porn-stars, and that's usually right around the time that the shoddy, cheaply built copy/paste houses start falling apart. Control of the HOA then passes to a civilian board of directors who come up with new rules, in theory. However, the realistic outcome for much of this decade has been major real estate rental companies owning more than 50% of houses in a subdivision after they bought up foreclosures.

Basically, when they control a majority interest in the subdivision, they can hire the same shitty HOA management companies that developers do, and they can pass their own rules with impunity because they have a majority share. They are incentivized to keep charging numerous annoying HOA penalties, because they can tie failure to pay HOA fines to their rental contract and kick out those who don't pay the HOA fines, charge them a massive penalty for lease termination AND still charge rent from the next sucker who moves in.

That's Florida in a nutshell, completely and utterly under the thumb of big real estate. Not to mention, there's a sucker moving down here every minute, so no developer / real estate /rental company ever runs out of marks, besides all the sleazy shit they do is totally legal.

I like HOAs, so long as the fees aren’t too steep. For the most part, they’ll keep neighborhoods looking more uniform, and typically won’t put up with having old, broken down cars on people’s lawns.

Didn’t read the article, but I can understand why they wouldn’t allow people to fly flags, even Old Glory. I imagine then they’d have to deal with people complaining about only flying certain flags, too many flags, etc.

This story is about a veteran who had a small flag in a flower pot. It was technically allowable by the HOA, but they still fucked with him. When he won they changed the HOA rules to make having a flag in a flower pot against the rules then fucked with his fees when he was very ill.

They should be firebombed.

I have 3 houses. One is in an hoa area. The value is much higher even though it is in the same general area as the other houses with no hoa.
As you drive from one aarea to the other where the HOA is there is a significant change in maintenance and cleanliness. The hoa fee is about 280 per quarter. I'll happily pay that and deal with the bs to have the more valuable home and not have the neighbors have 8 cars and weeds all over.
Same with rural areas. I'll take the hoa over the red neck swimming pool and semi trailer with no wheels and graffiti "art" all over it as a shed.

If this is a personal attack from someone in power that really has nothing to do with hoa areas in general.
