Now that 82% of households live in poverty, they don’t seem interested at all in what’s happening in Venezuela. It is a shame, because their voices could really come in handy as the world calls on Maduro to restore democracy and respect human rights.

For many Venezuelans, leaving was simply a matter of survival. Since the late President Hugo Chavez took power in 1999, the share of population living in poverty has risen to 82% from 45%. Rampant quadruple-digit inflation has meant wages don’t keep up with food prices. Increasing numbers of hungry Venezuelans must scavenge for food to get by.

The country continues to be roiled by political unrest, with government critics accusing President Nicolas Maduro of mismanagement and of unlawful power grabs.

With Venezuela’s economy collapsing, the exodus shows no sign of abating, although the Venezuelan government is making it more difficult for those leaving by slowing passport processing to a virtual standstill, said Tomas Paez, a sociology professor at Central University of Venezuela, an expert on the widening diaspora that now extends over 94 countries.

“You have all ages, all professions, persons of all education levels leaving Venezuela,” Paez said, adding that as many as 500,000 Venezuelans have fled their country in the last two years and a total of 2.1 million since 1998.

There's no class warfare when everyone is poor!

(with the exception of government officials and their cronies)

So now all those paranoid right wingers make sense huh leftists?

Funny how Bernie doesn't want to talk about Venezuela when it is not politically convenient!

It is impossible to make everyone equal by guaranteeing prosperity. The only way equality is achievable is through lowering our quality of life to that of failing nations.

The majority of people in Venezuela were living in poverty before Chavez. Illiteracy was rampant. If it weren't for U.S. sanctions, U.S. sabotage of Venezuelan resources via its vile oil cartel, the Bolivarian Revolution would be in a much healthier state.

^ The philosophy of zero accountability. It's always someone else that's to blame.

Chavez and Maduro didn't rule Venezuela during the 1980s and 1990s. Why did Venezuela almost collapse and suffer a series of coups then? Oh, that's right, global drop in oil prices and not socialism.

Im pretty sure Bernie never said he wanted to seize ford plants and private property and that there is a world of difference between what bernie and the Scandinavian countries are doing and believe in vs what Venezuela did but that wouldnt be as fun to jerk off to

National healthcare does not Venezuela create gentlemen

No Venezuela totally is

Bernie totally isnt and our system isnt. Tax funded healthcare does not make a country socialist

they dont believe in the same shit just because you can find in a goofball quote or some cherry picked similarities

Those Scandinavian countries arent socialist countries either . They have private property and capitalist economies

im not deploying the no true Scotsman argument just because you dont get what im saying here fella

'but but the oil prices' hahhahaha

uh ya, if you remove/appropriate virtually all forms of private business BUT the oil industry that's what happens when the price drops....

Also, they pay more to extract than most other nations, so it's not even necessarily the price drop as their own incompetence

Bernie is a Social Democrat of the European variety. He's not a Socialist by any stretch of the word.

That doesn't explain why Venezuelas economy collapsed during the 1980s and 1990s when private businesses were not removed or appropriated by the State.

in America to a certain type of person (not all of you dont get excited) thinks that everything not republican is socialism therefore communism. I think some people ( again not all of you guys) dont know what those words mean in the slightest

it absolutely does for the current situation, though

Nexxxxxt, you tried

Yeah I can totally see where treating your fellow human as an equal caused all this. Great thread Struggle.

You're ability to sound stupid is unrivaled. Even at a forum with flat-earthers. What an accomplishment.

Socialism is a dirty, evil, Godless word in the United States. Americans love to portray their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as a guntotting, velociraptor riding, money worshipper. The contradiction is hilarious.

Bernie is an old bitter Marxist who despises successful people and want to punish them for the sake of 'the poor', this is a guy who praised bread lines because it means everyone is on the same pane. People like him see 80% poverty as a good thing because it means that the gap of income inequality is closing.
