How your workout proceeds in a gym or in privates

So lately I have been questioning my boxing training.
We go a group of friends for 1 hour group private between 2 and 7 people. Depends on who shows up. The coach is a decent guy with huge ami background as a boxer and a coach. However he seems super lazy lately. And I have been unhappy.

A friend of mine who was in a home arrest for few months, who is the best boxer in the group, came back to training and we are doing basically what he says.

Here is how the workout goes.

We do 1 or 2 pad rounds each depending on how many people there are. While waiting for your turn on the pads you are either punching a heavy bag or working in a drill unguided with someone.

After the pads we either do partner drills with mainly slips and weaves drilled or we spar for 5-6 rounds or more or we mix these 2.

Then we do some heavy bag or shadow boxing for 2-3 rounds or an explosive routine (punching with weights, explosive push ups, plyo jumps, jump rope cycle). And we end up with core work.

All that for 1 hour.

What I am unhappy about is that half the stuff are unguided or useless. Core work, punching the bag unguided, or some circuits I can by myself without paying.

I get some attention to technique work or fighting only during pads, partner drills or spars.

I found out myself I go only because I have to spar safely with friends without risking an injury for few rounds and for these 1-2 pad rounds. The pad rounds are good though. Lots of feedback during them.

Anyway I would love to read how your workouts look like.

I am thinking to switching or adding privates with my ex kick boxing coach. He is at least holding pads for much longer, while giving feedback and often punching back making it very playful and making you aware of stuff. The negative here is he has a spar day on Saturday with a pool of very good fighters and you have to spend few months in his privates before being invited to spar with these guys. And while it is good to learn from these guys it is often unsafe. I have been sparring with some of these guys and they do not fuck around in spars, but kick your ass. Most of them pro or ami fighters.

1 coach to many guys is difficult to provide the necessary attention each person needs. the thing with coaching is, everyone is different, for example, one guy may lean too far forward on his kick, the next guy too far back. so all the correcting and teaching needs to be done on a individual basis. 1 guy to 10 students, this cant really happen.

The routine you posted does not sound bad but i think getting privates would be a good idea.

Depends what your goals are in these sports. Would you maybe want to compete one day?
Or is it just a hobby and you don’t really want to get too much brain damage and risk getting injured

If you might one day want to compete then you have to get your ass whooped a little. If not then just stick with the boxing gym if it’s just a fun hobby and to learn martial arts

Also how hard do the guys at the kickboxing gym go on beginners? Will they be going overwhelmingly hard when you are trying to go light? Not letting you work at all?
If they are still letting you work while beating you up maybe it’s not that bad, if they don’t let you work your offense at all because they just smash you then it’s a shitty gym for sparring

I am mainly for fun and sports. But I really want to get better. And I have given up on the idea to compete, but why not if I progress as much as I want to. But mainly I enjoy the sport of fighting.

Well depends on who you spar really. There are guys who would let you work. But there are guys who would ass whoop you. Funny these are the guys just above my level (or not much better) who would go to make it a fight. So in general it is fun to fight them, but dangerous. It is not like I can not get work done against such guys. I can punch back, but they are really out there to kick my ass :D So the end result is not funny at all often.

Yeah I was thinking the same. Try to get some privates incorporated into my boxing. Since I was dropped out of soccer I have time and energy for a couple of private sessions per week.

That coach is a saint and deserves a raise. That is about the best he can do with a group of guys who want to learn the sport and not just have a boxing inspired work out. As @shincheckin pointed out, semi privates like that are a bitch to run.

Hey thanks for the feedback. I really have not been in many places learning. I have met really only 1 significantly better coach than that one... and he was the coach of that boxing coach.

I guess I need to make out more of the class by my own and appreciate the work he does.
And to be honest in 1 hour with a full group of us, he gets half the daily wage of a construction worker specialist for my region, so I am sure he does not complain about the pay. What he does in a full group most of the time is to let us bang for 6 to 12 rounds and just see if we bang too hard, sometimes pointing out some stuff, but not often.
