I'm getting enCaged! (UPDATE - Movie #9: Fire Birds)

The entire movie is cringe.....the whole thing. Even Jolie wasnt as hot as i remembered.

Well. . . What can I say, you've won me over with your hard-hitting analysis and unassailable insight.

You're right, this was a missed opportunity with such a good cast in hindsight.

HOWEVER, in the year 2000, I was 16 years old with a major hard on for cars. This movie was very influential to me and I thought it was beyond cool at the time. I've since rewatched it as I've gotten older and I see just how ridiculous it can be. Ohhh Eleanor though, I did really enjoy that chase scene and still do. I can still hear the music playing as he's jumping it on the bridge.

This movie still holds as one of the better car movies that I've seen. Things like Need for Speed & Redline were much worse imo.

As far as racing, I love the movie Rush. It's on my top 20 movies of all time list.

I did like the movie Drive w/ Ryan Gosling. It was a slower off-speed type movie, but I liked the noirish vibe I got from it along with the 80's music in the soundtrack.

Getaway could of been half way decent if it weren't for how they did Selena Gomez's character. She was just annoying all the way through and being a hacker too was just ridiculous.

Drive Angry was just silly, and this one actually belongs in the thread. Ragin Cagin and all.

You should watch Walter Hill's The Driver.Drive takes a lot of things from that Film.

I always enjoyed Gone in 60 seconds.Cage is cagey and the cast seems to have fun with eachother.
A decent Cargasm flick

Interesting, I've since added to my watch list. Will check it out and thank you for the recommendation!

Man that movie was so brutal. One of those movies that you wish you could be there unleashing uppercuts left and right.

Cage was too busy unleashing left crosses and side kicks on bitches for you to get in and throw some strikes.

lol it was always funny to me how he gave 0 fucks about unleashing hell on these hoes but when he see's he's about to die he hesitates shooting with his gun. I would have started head shoting people left and right, open up a path, and take off. I'd rather try and swim home and drown than the shit they did to him.

I love Cage. I always said that if you put a good director in front of him, he'll bring an amazing performance. I think a lot of directors are either too afraid to tell him "no," or just plain old want to let him do his own thing. Which I don't think is the best choice. If you let Nick go "full Nick" then you get the bees. But if you work with him, you'll get a matchstick men, adaptation or leaving las vegas.

Good luck, dude. Start a drinking game on some of his funnier mannerisms to spice it up because the it's going to be a mighty gale without it.

edit: oops, this is a September thread.

Well said and I agree.

This thread's going to be going for a very long time. He has over 80 on-screen credits. As you can see, I'm five movies in so far.

EnCagement Movie #6: Season of the Witch

Season_of_the_Witch_(2011).jpg

I noticed that Nic is literally making movies faster than I've been watching them so I realized I gotta get going on this!

Nic Cage as a Knight Templar? Sold!

Season of the Witch. . . This is one of those movies that looked vaguely interesting to me when it was first released, but not actually interesting enough to go see it in the theater. Or I guess even to watch it on DVD when it came out. But I knew it was one that I eventually needed to get to.

I have really mixed thoughts on this one. I genuinely enjoyed the first 2/3 of the movie. But then felt really let down by the final act.

First, I want to mention the direction and production design. This film has a really good look to it. It's photographed well and has some nice camerawork and the design of the film worked for me. Apparently the director, Dominic Sena, hasn't made a movie since this one so my guess is he's in director's jail. But before this movie, he made Kalifornia, Gone in Sixty Seconds, Swordfish and Whiteout. So kind of a mixed bag, both in terms of box office performance as well as critical acclaim. Tilted toward the negative in terms of critical acclaim actually.

But watching this movie, I kept thinking that with the right script this guy could do a hell of a job directing a fantasy film, because Season of the Witch is full of fantasy-like mood and atmosphere.

And y'all know I love ol' Nicky, but I have to admit that this is not his finest hour in terms of performance. I have always felt like he is someone who tries to put effort into every single role he takes, but that effort is probably a little less on occasion. And this is one of those "a little less" occasions. His line delivery made me laugh a little, but hey, that's what we love about the Cage, right? Even when his performance is off, he's still entertaining!

And entertained I was for the majority of this film but GodDAMN is the ending botched! Going into it I was wondering how exactly they were going to wrap the story up because it seemed like there would be a lot of WRONG ways to do it . . . and indeed, they choose the left-hand path on this one.

If only the movie could've stayed on track I feel like I could hand out a solid 7.5/10. But instead I think 6/10 is the way to go. An uneven film, but probably still worth a watch for anyone who likes supernatural thrillers or who just likes to watch the Cage do his thing.

I think Season was one of those that I attempted, but it got the better of me. I have no real recollection of anything about it.....Scratch that, just watched your linked trailer. I did watch a fair amount of this, but can't recall how it ended. (googling now) ...

Annnd, yep, I definitely didn't finish this one. From reading the synopsis of the plot/ending, pretty happy it got the best of me.

Continue your noble work @shadow_priest_x , I'll keep checking in as the thread gets updated. I'm still a sucker for the Cage, at least enough to still give most of his movies a shot. (7 movies in production for 2017, ridiculous!!!)

I would have watched "Army of One", but fuck Russel Brand, guy is so fuckin full of himself. It sucks because he actually has a really good message he's trying to spread about addiction, but most people can't get past how much of a blowhard he is, including me at this point.

I watched both "Dog Eat Dog" & "The Trust", but remember about as much of those as I do "Season of the Witch". "Dog Eat Dog" I remember being very strange

I'm kind of surprised you bailed BEFORE you got to the final act because I thought the movie was kind of fun up to that point.

Ha, man I want to, but I get so few replies when I post a new film that it damages my motivation. I'm pretty sure @europe1 has even watched Season of the Witch but he has failed to materialize.

I appreciate that.

I've heard The Trust is good so I'm looking forward to that one. Army of One looks interesting as well.

Sadly, none of his upcoming films look particularly interesting to me. After he appeared in Snowden I was hoping to see him land some more big screen roles (even though that was a small one).

He needs to make National Treasure 3 happen already!

Season of the Witch is just a fun film. Cage and Pearlman as two ex-crusading knights errant that are tasked with escorting a witch to an abbey in the middle of plague-harried lands? Sign me up!

I sort of got the impression that they ran out of imagination/budget somewhere in the film though.

The design in scenes like this one felt quite evocative. Slowly, it turns more into a usual adventure film.

I've heard The Trust is good so I'm looking forward to that one

It's alright. Small-time film.

Dog eat Dog was fuckin bonkers.

Season of the Witch is more among "out of sight, out of mind" type of Movies for me.I cant recollect anything particularly memorable about that one

EnCagement Movie #7: The Runner

The_Runner_%282015_film%29_poster.jpg

Running across the trailer for Cage's upcoming movie 211 inspired me to get back on this little project of mine, and so I perused Netflix to see what unwatched Cage movies were available. After seeing the trailer for The Runner, I had some hope for this one. I thought it looked like an interesting, grounded political drama based around the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and I figured I would throw caution to the wind, even despite the film's 26% RT rating, and give it a watch.

I think the movie starts strong but quickly loses focuses and, in the end, isn't sure what movie it wants to be. Does it want to be the story of an underdog politician going after a megacorporation? Does it want to be the story of a politician on the rise whose career is derailed by scandal? Does it want to be the story of that same politician's quest to find the TRUE love of his life? It's not sure and in the end the film tries to be all of these things and doesn't do any of them particularly well.

The film would've been better off if it had stuck to the Deepwater Horizon plotline from start to finish without getting sidetracked, and the first 15 minutes of the film give us a glimpse of what that film would look like. But unfortunately it gets sidetracked by various tangents which bring the momentum of the story to a screeching halt.

The biggest complaint I saw in many of the reviews is that the film is dull, and ultimately I have to conclude that it is. Like I said, it starts strong, but falters as it goes. By the end, I was really having to work to pay attention as my interest had already fled.

That is not to say that The Runner is a BAD film. Rather, it is simply mediocre. That's a shame too because Cage's performance here is reliably good and probably could've garnered some critical acclaim if the movie surrounding that performance was better.

I am still a Cage fan, there are still 3 movies that you haven't watched that I liked

Family man, Snake Eye, and Joe. I'd recommend these movies to you as you continue down the rabbit hole.

I've actually seen all three of those films, I just haven't rewatched them yet for this little project.

The Family Man is excellent and one of my favorite holiday films of all time. Snake Eyes was disappointing. Joe was pretty good.

Has anyone seen Mandy yet?
