Is it just me or were the 90s an especially creative era for action movies?

Last night I watched Hard Rain for the first time. It was okay, I didn't love it. Best things about it were Morgan Freeman as a villain, Betty White being bitchy, and remembering better days for Christian Slater when he was still headlining theatrical films.

But it made me think of something about 90s action movies and how, in a lot of ways, the 90s felt like a special decade for action movies and I think it's because the IDEAS because the action films of that decade were pretty awesome, whereas today's action films often feel quite generic.

Think about something like Face/Off:

In order to foil an extortion plot, an FBI agent undergoes a facial transplant surgery and assumes the identity and physical appearance of a terrorist, but the plan turns from bad to worse when the same terrorist impersonates the FBI agent.

Or The Rock:

A mild-mannered chemist and an ex-con must lead the counterstrike when a rogue group of military men, led by a renegade general, threaten a nerve gas attack from Alcatraz against San Francisco.

Or The Matrix:

A computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against its controllers.

The list goes on and on, from Total Recall to Demolition Man to True Lies.

All of these films have some unique idea that sets them apart from the standard "spy thriller" or "military man" or "guy out for revenge" kind of plots (even though they may include these elements).

Basically, when I think of 90s action movies, I think of brainstorming sessions that probably went something like this:

Even Hard Rain had an interesting idea behind it, but only disappointed in the execution. In that way, it's a really solid example of what the 90s did for us on the action movie front. It was clever and innovative. But today? Eh. Everyone's like, hey, let's just stick to formula and do what has always worked before.

The line-up of great 90s action films is truly excellent and I'm not sure that the 00s or 10s can compete.

What's everyone else think? Is it just me? Or from a conceptual perspective, do a great many of today's action films feel like weaksauce compared to the 90s?

Is there anything the 90s didnt do right?

It has a lot to do with movie studios not taking any risks anymore. I also think its a mix of rose colored glasses and the practical effects of 90's movies. The CGI just takes you out of it. You go watch the Riverbed scene in Terminator 2 and compare it to any recent CGI action movie. It doesnt compare AT ALL. It also doesnt help that superhero movies have taken over the action genre and we already know those stories, we just get to see them with real people.

Guys like christopher nolan and denis villenueve are trying to keep those new ideas alive. It may also come down to, what the hell else are they gonna make a movie about? its almost all been done before.

I fucking love Broken Arrow

They all seem rather generic. I'm speaking of course those Out for Justic, Hard Rain, Broken Air movies etc. For all the shit people give about superhero movies, there were way too many of those action films with almost the same plot

actually, started rewatching best of the best last night....got me thinking about martial arts and action flicks from back in the day. would love for you guys to remind me of or recommend gems.

started with double dragon because i was thinking about that video game but then as soon as i saw scott wolf as billy lee, i turned that shit off.

Seeing is believing.

When I run "Best action movies of the 90s" through Google, this is what I get:

Course this is ignoring Azn shit from the 90's too, like Hard Boiled and Riki-Oh

90's is simply the GOAT era for action movies

Late 80's also very good

As if there wernt plenty of aweful 90s action movies too.

Id say movies like Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Goodfellas, Casino, deserve mention over faceoff and the rock

Those are both good but theyre extremely silly

Kinda looks like a wash to me.

There are several titles in that list from the 90s that I have watched several times. I bet I've seen The Rock at least 15 times. Maybe 20.

I think from the 00s and 10s the only films that I've watched more than maybe three times are Kill Bill, Crouching Tiger and Casino Royale.

Do you agree with me then that, on a conceptual level, today's action movies often feel kind of generic in comparison?

Looking at your list the some of the 00's and 10's movies I wouldn't even consider to be an action movie.

Gladiator?
Avatar?
Batman?
Looper?
Inception?

These are Dramas that include action scenes.
