Is it just me or were the 90s an especially creative era for action movies?

You thought Face/Off kind of sucked? Ouch. I've always loved that movie, and it and The Rock are the films that solidified my love for Nic Cage. There are only a handful of films that old that I can remember actually watching in the theater, but Face/Off is one of them.

I'm surprised you didn't think T2 was creative. It's very different from the first film. The first obviously had action elements, but it was much smaller in scale and was arguably more of a horror film than an action film. T2 was much bigger, expanded on the Skynet idea, had great action setpieces, and introduced an very memorable villain in the T-1000.

I do think you're right that sci-fi ideas merging with straightforward action is a big part of why a lot of those movies were great. It gave you something interesting to think about while you're watching all the carnage. It wasn't just Navy Seals infiltrating a drug lord's compound of whatever.

I was a big fan of Hong Kong John Woo. His Hollywood stuff lacked the charm.

T2 was great, don't get me wrong. Outside the T-1000 though it was just kinda more of the same (to me).

Agreed. When I think of the 80's films it was a lot of martial arts and gun-fights. Not a lot of thought-provoking scenarios. Predator was a bit of sci-fi. Maybe that's why it's one of the best action films ever.

The 90's was the best era for urban culture films.
I have a long list of under-the-radar favorites from the 90's.

HBO was also the p4p best channel ever in the 90's.

- Hardcore TV
- Tales From the Crypt
- Dream on
- Def Comedy Jam
- Mr. Show
- Real Sex (my favorite show)
- Taxicab Confessions
- Perversions of Science

I used to jerk off to Real Sex and sometimes Taxicab if the chicks in the back were hot. Also when Howard Stern Was on TV in E early days he brought on so many hot chicks. was a fap fest.

Ya man those were the days of America Online, I still only had VHS but never got to watch them unless i had the house to myself. So late at night all you got was Howard Stern show and the Latinas on Univision. Had to imagine them naked but at least they were hot as hell.

I used to do that too lol

Sometimes Stern would have girls going to town on themselves and shit

No internet and the same magazines got old

Couldn't agree more. Nowadays everything is comic book heroes and annoyingly PC. Aside from John Wick I can't think of any that really stand out from the others. Maybe Deadpool but I didn't really care for it. It's all just over the top CGI with little plot and cramming as many "kick ass" female characters in as you can

Dredd and Mad Max Fury Road come to mind. As well as Edge of Tomorrow. I would say the 2010s are clearly better than the 2000s, but the 80s and 90s take the cake. 90s also win for the creative scale of course.

Growing up in Michigan I could pick up a Canadian station on rabbit ears in the TV in my room (not CBC) that would show foriegn films after 11 pm, many times those foriegn films would show nudity....

It was that or scrambled porn

its much more egregious how FandF just blatantly ripped off Point Break and b/c cars were involved people were cool w/ it?

It has a lot to do with movie studios not taking any risks anymore. I also think its a mix of rose colored glasses and the practical effects of 90's movies. The CGI just takes you out of it. You go watch the Riverbed scene in Terminator 2 and compare it to any recent CGI action movie. It doesnt compare AT ALL. It also doesnt help that superhero movies have taken over the action genre and we already know those stories, we just get to see them with real people.

Guys like christopher nolan and denis villenueve are trying to keep those new ideas alive. It may also come down to, what the hell else are they gonna make a movie about? its almost all been done before.

When some one mentions 90s movie I always think of Terminator 2.

Lots of cool stuff in the 90s Sadam was still alive and getting bombed and I got sick from volcanic ass!

Loved seeing this back in the 80's.

Usually meant you were in for a good time.

Forgot about Edge of Tomorrow. That was awesome. Didn't think Mad Max was as good as it was made out to be. Big fan of the originals though

You know, it's not that I haven't enjoyed a lot of the action movies of the 00s and 10s, it's that I just haven't enjoyed them AS MUCH as I did a lot of the stuff in the 90s.

I think that we have had a lot of GOOD action movies in the last handful of years--I just recently watched Olympus Has Fallen and really enjoyed it--it's just that the REAL gems that cross the line into excellence are quite rare these days.

BTW everybody, I mentioned in the OP that I just watched Hard Rain for the first time.

Anyone want to talk about that thing?

Yeah and Christian Slater + Morgan Freeman

Its a solid movie

Morgan Freeman is my favorite part of the film. He's great as a villain.

Betty White also deserves a mention. Totally didn't expect to see her in that shit.

I haven't seen it since I was like 14, but I thought it was the shit. Nice concept for a film. Must've been a nightmare to shoot
