Is it just me or were the 90s an especially creative era for action movies?

Speed, Starship Troopers and Last Action Hero were three films I loved as a kid as well. More fun ideas for action flicks there

People may shit on me for this, but I loved Predator 2, Army of Darkness, Alien 3, Escape from LA and Johnny Mnemonic as well. Also, Die Hard 3 is my favourite of the series

Predator 2 was interesting I think a lot people are just disapointed Arnie is not in it.

Well my mom said she does not like because the lead actor is black.

Yeah I know racist but thats what she really said.

def prime time. i rank action movies as 80s then 90s then 70s. they were all great and unique in their own way.

True.

It's actually good.

You're only hurting yourself by not appreciating that franchise. You need it a lot more than it needs you.

The ending alone makes Predator 2 epic.

On top of that, it's a solid flick

I don't feel like the action genre was really born until the 80s.

What do you think of as a 70s action movie? Dirty Harry or something like that?

You had James Bond and the burgeoning martial arts genre. Not much else of note.

Hmm. . . Yeah, I guess those could perhaps be called action movies. I guess Chuck Norris had some stuff in the 70s, too.

I tend to think of those films almost like proto-action movies--the grandfathers of action films--but I don't think of the actual action genre really coming into its own as a clearly defined thing until the 80s. Maybe that's not a fair assessment, but it's how I think of it.

Bond could be? Weren't there Bond films in every decade shown on your graphic? Bruce Lee was the guy who made a mark in that decade. Chuck's best work is all in the 80's.

80's saw the rise of the action stars and the genre came into its own, no doubt.

Yes, though you'll note there was a bit of discussion ITT over whether Casino Royale should be classified as "action."

I feel like the 80s gave birth to, if nothing else, the MODERN action film.

When it comes to the genre, everything that came before it was looking TOWARD the 80s. Everything that came after that decade is looking back at it. It was a pivotal point.

There's chase scenes, explosions, gun fights, fist fights, car crashes. Not sure what else Bond films need to do to be action movies. They sure ain't dramas or mysteries.

I agree. The 80's were a fantastic time to be a kid who loved action. I consider it the best decade for the genre. Although there's many classics after that. Like Raid 2.

Because women ruined modern action movies.

When you're enjoying an action movie and suddenly the woman character comes in with a load of attitude to somehow match the guys roles and gradually turn the movie into a melodrama. Completely ruined it.

Terminator 2 (and 1 for that matter) disagrees with this.

Linda Hamilton had plenty of presence & onscreen fire to hang with the big boys.

Alien? Or is that not acrion?

Modern action movies.

All I see nowadays is the influx of women acting hard and tough, beating men with their bare hands and adding the crap romances to appeal women has ruined so many movies.

Hollywood needs to stop projecting women this way, they just look like complete idiots and ruin the movie.

They're nothing compared to Ripley or Sarah Connor.
