Is Tom Cruise The Biggest Movie Star of All Time?

I wanna see Tom Cruise play a mobster and roles like De Niro, Pacino, used to. He's just getting to that age where he'd look the part and his acting chops and charisma are badass for that kind of role. Imagine Tom Cruise in Casino or playing the Devil's Advocate. He'd also be a great Han Solo.

Pachino or Deniro most likely.

Profitability, it's Van Damme somehow.

Rainman
A few good men
The Firm
Born on the Fourth of July
Jerry Maguire
Collateral
War of the worlds
Oblivion
Edge of tomorrow
The last samurai
Like I said earlier he was a truly fine actor in Magnolia, Risky Business and Tropic Thunder. Some of the films you listed are decent but I would hardly say it's due to his acting ability.

I mean I guess he has to be in the running, but like Leo I don't like him in most things and feel he rarely comes across as a real person.

For me it's always been Ford. Han Solo, Indiana Jones, and Jack Ryan would be more than enough to define a superstar career.

Then you also have stuff like Regarding Henry, Blade Runner, Air Force one, etc. The guy has a ton of range, charisma, and talent.

As I understand it, Sam Jackson is technically the most successful movie star.

Jurassic Park, 3 Star Wars movies, avengers movies and iron mans and whatever else. Plus a bunch of solid performances in Tarantino movies

If they ever make a movie about Tom Cruise's life...I think that a black guy should play the role. If you disagree with that then you are an idiot, and obviously a racist.

Um. Ok.

He was great in rainman, and yes, born in the 4th of July was great because of his acting.

I'm not asking whether he's the best actor or not, that's largely subjective - But is he objectively the most significant and most successful movie star in history? When you combine his tremendous box office success with his sheer longevity, I think he could be. What do you think?

No, but nice try

I do think leo is underrated itt.

If Leo has 5 more hit movies, he's the biggest.

I think he was serviceable in rainman and over the top in born of the 4th.

He was that movie.. And it was a good movie. I will agree the performance was not understated in any way, but the innocence of the time and the transformation in that reality needed to be kind of loud.

EDIT: more than serviceable in rainman.

Film is art first, so box office and longevity are irrelevant to significance.

Yeah no doubt. Tom’s been doing it since 1980; that’s close to 40 years.

If Leo is still turning out hits into 2020s, which he hopefully will, then he’ll be GOAT.

I'll tell you what, I haven't seen BOT4th for 15 years. Why don't I watch it again and see if maybe I was wrong. I might be out of touch a bit on this one to keep arguing my stance.
