I'm not entirely sure,but before the fight Wilder was giving interviews saying he was going to "catch a body" on his record for this fight and basically saying he was going to "kill Stiverne inside the ring." He was giving a ton of interviews using language like that, and he was getting alot of neg reception from fans since people don't generally like that talk since it's obviously unprofessional and going a bit far.

So I just think the ref was cautious because of the entire scenario regarding the fight, to make sure no extra damage was inflicted. Wilder did look possessed too TBH to eradicate Stiverne, his eyes looked crazy. Good shit though.
