SONS OF ANARCHY Actor Theo Rossi Joins LUKE CAGE Series

Theo-Rossi-Luke-Cage-090215-Dragonlord.jpg

Netflix's Marvel series Luke Cage has added two more key players. Deadline reports that Sons of Anarchy standout Theo Rossi has been cast as a regular opposite Mike Colter and Alfre Woodard in the third series from Marvel's four-series package for Netflix.

Additionally, Deadline reports that Rosario Dawson will reprise her Daredevil role as Claire Temple in Luke Cage. That makes sense since in the comic books, Claire is a romantic interest of Luke Cage. First introduced on Daredevil, Dawson's Claire also is set to appear in the second Marvel series, Jessica Jones - where Colter's Cage also will make his debut - before moving to Luke Cage.

Like most comic book adaptations, the breakdown for Luke Cage features fake character names. Deadline hears Rossi was cast to play the "Sonny" role, described as relentless and menacing, smooth and manipulative, street smart and controlling. Deadline hears that in fact Rossi would be playing Luke Cage's enemy Shades aka Alvarez, a well known criminal.

In Luke Cage, Colter plays Cage, a wrongly accused man who, granted superstrength by a sabotaged experiment, escapes prison to become a superhero for hire. As we previously reported, Woodard is expected to play a version of Marvel villain Black Mariah, a nemesis to Luke Cage as well as Iron Fist.

Misty Knight to Appear in Netflix's LUKE CAGE Television Series

Misty-Knight-Luke-Cage-090215b-Dragonlord.jpg

Marvel's Mercedes "Misty" Knight, the police officer-turned-superhero, will make her live-action debut on Netflix's Luke Cage. Sources for ComicBook.com have confirmed that Misty Knight will appear in Netflix's Luke Cage television series. When we meet her, she'll be a New York City police detective, who reluctantly partners up with Luke Cage (Mike Colter).

In the comics, Misty Knight was a decorated New York police officer whose life dramatically changed when her right arm was seriously injured during a bomb attack. Her act of bravery did not go unnoticed as Tony Stark supplied Misty with a bionic arm. However, the NYPD wanted to assign Misty to a desk-job so she resigned instead. At this point, her best buddy Colleen Wing talked Misty into starting a private investigation firm together, Nightwing Restorations. She then encounters Heroes For Hire, a superhero partnership consisting of Luke Cage/Power Man and Danny Rand/Iron Fist, who would eventually become the love of her life.

Misty is a highly-skilled martial artist who is proficient in hand-to-hand combat and has near perfect aim. Her bionic arm made of Vibranium is super-strong, giving her a vice-like grip, but because the rest of her body is ordinary she does have limitations as to how much she can lift.

Simone Missick Cast as Misty Knight in Marvel's LUKE CAGE

Simone-Missick-Misty-Knight-090215-Dragonlord.jpg

Netflix's Marvel series Luke Cage has rounded out its core cast. Deadline is reporting that Simone Missick has landed the younger female lead opposite Mike Colter, Alfre Woodard and Theo Rossi in the third series in Marvel's four-series package for Netflix.

Missick will play what is listed on the breakdown as Missy, a woman with a strong sense of justice. Deadline hears the actual character is Marvel's Misty Knight, a former NYPD officer who gets a new bionic arm by Tony Stark after losing hers in the line of duty. She eventually launches a detective agency, helping Cage.

In Luke Cage, Colter plays Cage, a wrongly accused man who, colter cagegranted superstrength by a sabotaged experiment, escapes prison to become a superhero for hire. Rossi and Woodard would be playing enemies to Cage - Shades aka Alvarez and Black Mariah. Additionally, Rosario Dawson will reprise her role as Claire Temple from Netflix's Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

Mahershala Ali Joins LUKE CAGE Netflix Series as Cottonmouth

Mahershala-Ali-Cottonmouth-090315-Dragonlord.jpg

Marvel's Luke Cage has found its Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes with the casting of Mahershala Ali (House of Cards, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2). The series will premiere in 2016 everywhere that Netflix is available. Stokes, a Harlem nightclub owner, will become an unexpected foe in Luke's life when Stokes' criminal activities threaten Luke's world.

In the comic books, Cottonmouth was a drug lord whose drugs were used to frame Luke Cage (as his original name, Carl Lucas). He has appeared on and off, including in the storylines Shadowland (which focused heavily on Daredevil and the other "street-level" heroes involved in the Netflix series) and Spider-Island. He's not to be confused with the other Cottonmouth from the Marvel Universe, who dresses up like a snake as part of the Serpent Society.

"Mahershala is an actor of extraordinary range and gravitas. As Cottonmouth he will really let loose," said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. "Luke Cage won't know what hit him."

It was previously announced that Mike Colter (Marvel's Jessica Jones, The Good Wife) will play the charismatic lead character, Luke Cage, in the series. Cheo Hodari Coker (SouthLAnd, Ray Donovan) will write the series' first two episodes in addition to serving as showrunner and Executive Producer. Marvel's Luke Cage is scheduled to premiere in 2016 on Netflix.

Frank Whaley Joins Netflix's LUKE CAGE as Detective Scarfe

Frank-Whaley-Luke-Cage-090915-Dragonlord.jpg

Deadline has learned that Frank Whaley has joined the cast of Netflix's Marvel series Luke Cage. He will play the recurring role of Detective Scarfe, a hard-nosed detective, in the third series in Marvel's four-series package for Netflix.

Detective Scarfe has a storied history in the comic books, serving as a close ally to characters like Luke, Iron Fist, and Misty Knight. Scarfe took a surprising villainous turn during the events of Shadowland, so it could be that he's either an ally or enemy to Luke Cage.

Mike Colter stars as Luke Cage, a wrongly accused man who, granted super strength by a sabotaged experiment, escapes prison to become a superhero for hire. Alfre Woodard, Simone Missick and Theo Rossi co-star, with Rosario Dawson reprising her role from Daredevil.

Whaley recently wrapped production on the ABC miniseries Madoff, opposite Richard Dreyfuss. He can also be seen in the upcoming features, Paramount's Monster Trucks and indie comedy The Outskirts. Whaley's fourth feature as writer/director, Like Sunday, Like Rain, was released earlier this year.

Alfre Woodard to Play a Harlem Politician in LUKE CAGE Series

Alfre-Woodard-Luke-Cage-091515-Dragonlord.jpg

Marvel’s Luke Cage steps into the world of Harlem politics with the spectacular addition of Alfre Woodard (12 Years a Slave, Annabelle). The series premieres in 2016 everywhere that Netflix is available. Throughout her storied career, Woodard has earned four Primetime Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and been nominated for an Academy Award.

Woodard will play Mariah Dillard, a local Harlem politician--and cousin to recently announced Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes (Mahershala Ali)--who is looking to bring a new era of change to the streets she grew up on. Her personal life and professional career are thrown into turmoil by both Harlem's newest hero Luke Cage as well as her cousin Cottonmouth's nefarious acts.

“Alfre has an incredible, unique, and intimidating presence on screen that makes her perfect as a leader of the Harlem community,” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “We couldn’t be more excited that an actress as celebrated and talented as Alfre has decided to join us on this adventure.”

It was previously announced that Mike Colter (The Good Wife) will play the charismatic lead character, Luke Cage, in the series, and that Mahershala Ali will bring the villainous Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes to life. Cheo Hodari Coker (SouthLAnd, Ray Donovan) will write the series’ first two episodes in addition to serving as showrunner and Executive Producer.

Marvel Confirms LUKE CAGE Castings; New Character Details Revealed

LukeCageBandeau.jpg

Marvel’s Luke Cage has added four important characters with Misty Knight, Shades, Rafael Scarfe and Claire Temple. The series will be streaming everywhere Netflix is available in 2016.

Simone Missick (Ray Donovan) has joined the cast to play popular character Misty Knight, a Harlem police detective who is determined to learn the truth about Luke Cage. “We know fans have waited years to see Misty Knight brought to life, so we had to find the right actress,” said Executive Producer/Marvel's Head of TV Jeph Loeb. “Simone blew us away with her performance as the strong-willed cop on a mission.”

Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy) has joined the cast as Shades, a ruthless criminal with ties to Cage’s mysterious past. "Theo Rossi is a swiss army knife--no matter what you bring to him, he has a tool for it--and he’s playfully unpredictable,” said series Executive Producer and Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. “His Shades will be someone you hate to love.”

Frank Whaley (Ray Donovan) has been cast as Rafael Scarfe, a hard-nosed NYPD detective who partners with Misty Knight in their Luke Cage investigation. “Frank Whaley has a wiry intensity that he’s imbued in Det. Rafael Scarfe,” said Coker. “He’s a great counterpart to Misty, and a wonderful actor.”

Actress Rosario Dawson will reprise her role from Marvel’s Daredevil as nurse Claire Temple. Her blossoming friendship with Luke Cage will have a major impact on both characters’ lives. “We are thrilled to have Rosario in another one of our television series,” said Loeb. “Her performance as Claire Temple in Marvel’s Daredevil was astonishing and we can’t wait to see her shine in Marvel’s Luke Cage.”

Mike Colter Reveals Where and When LUKE CAGE Takes Place

Luke-Cage-Mike-Colter-101315-Dragonlord.jpg

During an interview with ComicBook.com for Jessica Jones at New York Comic Con, Mike Colter spent most of his time talking about approaching the role of Luke Cage on this series, but he did also drop some new tidbits about Luke Cage, the next series in development for Netflix and Marvel, and the third of the four Defenders series.

"I can tell you what they’ve allowed me to, which is basically, Luke Cage will take place a few months after Jessica Jones," Colter said. "So in real time, if you watch Jessica Jones, you’ll find [at the end] Luke Cage uptown in Harlem, working, trying to make ends meet. So I can say you’ll find him uptown in Harlem, and in a completely different world from Hell’s Kitchen. Luke Cage really hasn’t figured out what he’s doing. He’s tending bar, he’s bouncing around. And for good reason, he’s a fugitive, he has some skeletons in his closet

"He’s trying to basically stay off the radar. The people he hangs around with, though, are in need. Ultimately, he’d rather be alone, but with the way he’s equipped he does step up. That’s what it’s about, it’s about finding that inner feeling to make you want to take action. Sometimes we just sit around, and sit on our hands and don’t do anything because it’s like 'hey, that’s not my problem.' You can’t do that when you’re a superhero. You have these gifts, now use them."

First Audio of LUKE CAGE Actor Saying "Sweet Christmas"

30w34ex.jpg

During a series of roundtable interviews at New York Comic Con with cast and crew from Marvel's Jessica Jones, the next Marvel/Netflix series collaboration, Comicbook.com had some time with Mike Colter. The actor, a veteran of screens big and small, plays Luke Cage in Jessica Jones, and is also now in production for his own titular series.

Of course, with playing Luke Cage comes a certain line, a catch phrase that fans of the character are hoping to hear, and you can here right below. Colter also assured us that it's in both series, and even that despite some initial hesitation, he's come to love the phrase.

"You'll get that later. It fits - actually, I was afraid of that phrase, but it actually fits so well, I don't know why, I don't know why it fits so well into Luke's mouth. It's appropriate, always apropos."

One thing Colter did not want to make the transition from the comics into the shows was a certain piece of ornamental headwear.

"When I saw the tiara, all the 1970s blackspoitation stuff, I was like, 'oh my God...' But they assured me, 'that's not what we're doing, we're doing a modern day version.' But yeah, [Luke Cage is] production-codenamed 'Tiara'. It's so funny. We're gonna give them what they want, though," Colter told ComicBook.com. Sweet Christmas, indeed.

Sonia Braga to Play Claire Temple's Mother in LUKE CAGE

Sonia-Braga-Luke-Cage-2-Dragonlord.jpg

Claire Temple's mother is coming to Marvel's Luke Cage. Emmy and three-time Golden Globe nominee Sonia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Moon Over Parador, Brothers & Sisters) has joined the series as Soledad Temple. Fans previously met her daughter, Claire (Rosario Dawson), in Marvel’s Daredevil.

Braga became a household name in her native Brazil in 1975 when she starred in the telenovela Gabriela. 10 years later, she earned international acclaim for her role in Kiss of the Spider Woman, for which she received her first Golden Globe nomination and kicked off her English-speaking career. She would go on to star in Moon Over Parador and The Burning Season, where she garnered two more Golden Globe nominations and an Emmy nomination. Recently, she’s been seen in Alias and Royal Pains.

"A character as strong as Claire needs an equally powerful mother, and with Sonia we found the perfect actress to deliver the stellar performance we needed," said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. "In Marvel’s Luke Cage, fans will now get a chance to see where Claire got the fire we love her for."

"Sonia Braga? Rosario Dawson? 'Nuff said. I'm tuning in," said Executive Producer and Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. "When it came to finding someone who was both formidable yet possessed a light touch, Sonia was the perfect choice and has been a Godsend."

It was previously announced that Mike Colter (Marvel’s Jessica Jones, The Good Wife) will play the charismatic lead character, Luke Cage, in the series. Cheo Hodari Coker (SouthLAnd, Ray Donovan) will write the series’ first two episodes in addition to serving as showrunner and Executive Producer.

Rosario Dawson has a sweet gig. She's in ALL of the Netflix shows, apparently.

I'm half way through JJ and Colter is killing it as Cage. I can't think of anyone who'd do a better job in the role.

It will be interesting to see who the Big Bad is for this series, since there can't be that many people in the Netflix Marvel Universe who would pose a physical threat to Cage.
