Well, I believe his first academy opened in Florida back in 2007 or 2008 right when he was still an active competitor. And then around 2010 or 2011, he opened the New York one and lived in New York. The academy started growing and by mid 2012, he was contemplating on whether or not he would compete in the 2013 ADCC and he realized his academy was growing by leaps and bounds and he had alot of promising students. Marcelo said that he knew if he was to stay an active competitor, he could not be the trainer his students needed since there would be days he would be tired from training and could not, and would not be able to, focus on them like they deserve. Of course with retirement, he decided to have kids and by the time he determined he was done for sure, summer of 2013, he also found out his wife was pregnant which cemented it for him.Why did he retire so young in the first place ?
