Deadpool 2's David Leitch in Talks to Direct ENTER THE DRAGON Remake

DqzaOPt.jpg

Hot off Deadpool 2, David Leitch is in early talks to direct Enter the Dragon, the remake of the 1973 martial arts classic that cemented Bruce Lee’s iconic status. The original was a global hit out of Hong Kong, but its release was marked with tragedy as it came right after Lee’s death. The 45th anniversary of his death on July 20, 1973 was last Friday. They will now set a writer.

In Enter the Dragon, a Shaolin martial artist is pressed to enter a karate tournament on the island owned by the secretive Han, who is suspected of using the gathering as a way to smuggle drugs around the world. The protagonist has his own motivation: revenge. He learns that his sister fought for her life and ultimately killed herself on Han’s island, rather than succumb to rape by a group of Han’s thugs.

Warner Bros has been trying to figure out a way to recapture the magic of the Robert Clouse-directed film for years, with filmmakers like Spike Lee and Brett Ratner developing versions of the Golden Harvest release. Leitch is an intriguing choice.

Aside from being — as the opening credits boast in Deadpool 2–one of the guys who killed John Wick’s dog, the John Wick co-director helmed the Charlize Theron actioner Atomic Blonde and was second unit director on such films as Jurassic World and Captain America: Civil War.

DEADWOOD Movie Officially a Go at HBO; Production to Begin in October 2018

1PJcVmg.jpg

Tell your god to ready for…more Deadwood. Twelve years after the series ended its three-season run, HBO has green lighted a movie that will continue the story of the lawless western outpost. HBO chief Casey Bloys made the announcement Wednesday at his TCA session.

Production on the film is set to begin in October, Bloys said, and he's hoping for a premiere in spring 2019 on HBO. Deadwoodcreator David Milch is writing it, and Daniel Minahan, who helmed four episodes of the series, is attached to direct.

The production is in the process of lining up schedules for castmembers. Bloys demurred when asked for details, saying, "Let's take the green light and celebrate that."

Deadwood ran for three seasons on HBO from 2004 2006, earning eight Emmy wins and a devoted audience. The show ended on what was, to many viewers, an inconclusive note, and talk of — take your pick — a shortened fourth season, miniseries or movies has come up periodically practically since the moment the show ended.

Stories have shifted over the years as to why Deadwood ended after season three; at the time, Milch said he and HBO weren't able to work out a deal for a fourth season, partly because he didn't want to shorten the episode order.

In a 2012 interview, however, Milch said he "absolutely knew" he was writing a series finale with the last episode of season three.

The project has picked up more momentum in the past year. At TCA in July 2017, Bloys told reporters he had read a script from Milch. Then in January, Bloys said he was "optimistic" that production could begin in the fall.

The Deadwood cast was headed by Ian McShane, Timothy Olyphant, Molly Parker, Kim Dickens, John Hawkes, Robin Weigert, W. Earl Brown, Dayton Callie, Paula Malcomson and Brad Dourif. Jim Beaver, whose character was killed in season three, and the late Powers Boothe were also regulars.

Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska to Star in Sony's CHARLIE'S ANGELS Reboot

Charlie and Sony have found their Angels. Naomi Scott, who is starring as Jasmine in Disney's upcoming Aladdin remake, and British newcomer Ella Balinska are set to join Kristen Stewart in the studio's new Charlie's Angels reboot.

Elizabeth Banks, who is directing the project, will also take a role in front of the camera: She will play Bosley, the face of the enigmatic and never-seen owner of the detective agency, Charlie Townsend.

The new story takes the detective agency premise of the original television series and turn-of-the new century movies and takes it global, with the Townsend Agency now a worldwide security and intelligence service that has teams around the planet. The movie will focus on one of those teams and the next generation of Angels.

"Charlie's Angels, for me, is one of the original brands to celebrate the empowered woman since its debut in the '70s," said Banks in a statement. "This film honors the legacy of Charles Townsend and his agency while introducing a new era of modern and global Angels. I couldn't be more excited to work with Kristen, Naomi and Ella to bring this chapter to fans around the world."

The new project has Banks' imprint on all levels. In addition to being in front and behind the camera, Banks wrote the latest draft of the script with Jay Basu (The Girl in the Spider's Web), working off of earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Semi Chellas.

Banks is also producing the project with husband Max Handelman via their Brownstone Productions banner, as well as Doug Belgrad, who is co-financing through his 2.0 Entertainment, and Elizabeth Cantillon.

Sony is setting a Sept. 27, 2019, release for the new movie.

British-born Scott appeared on TV's Terra Nova and starred in 2017's live-action Power Rangers movie before nabbing the high-profile role of Jasmine in Aladdin. That movie, directed by Guy Ritchie, opens May 24, 2019.

Angels will be a big break for Balinska, who has only appeared in two television episodes, one of them in the U.K.'s long-running series Midsomer Murders, and the other an indie titled A Modern Tale.

STAR WARS: EPISODE IX to Begin Production, Cast Announced Including Carrie Fisher

xMqEFQa.jpg

Lucasfilm has unveiled its cast for Star Wars: Episode IX, and late actor Carrie Fisher is among those who will appear in the conclusion to the Skywalker saga.

Director J.J. Abrams will use unreleased footage from 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens to put Fisher's Leia into Episode IX.

"We desperately loved Carrie Fisher,” Abrams said in a statement. “Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie [Lourd], we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.”

Fisher died in December 2016, after completing work on last year's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In January 2017, Lucasfilm issued a statement assuring fans that there were no plans for a digital re-creation of Leia, after reviving late actor Peter Cushing's Grand Moff Tarkin for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In April 2017, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy said Fisher would not appear in Episode IX. Abrams took over as director of Episode IX in September 2017 after the exit of Colin Trevorrow, and penned a new script himself with Chris Terrio, and it seems plans changed sometime after the new director boarded.

On Friday, Lucasfilm also announced returning cast members for the film will include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd. New stars joining the cast include Naomi Ackie and Logan actor Richard E. Grant.

They will be joined by Star Wars actors including Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3P0), and Billy Dee Williams, appearing as Lando Calrissian in a live-action film for the first time since 1983's Return of the Jedi. Absent from the cast list Lucasfilm released is Keri Russell, who was reported to be in talks earlier this month.

Star Wars: Episode IX begins filming Aug. 1 at Pinewood Studios in London. The film opens Dec. 20, 2019.
