Set It Up Actor Glen Powell to Join Tom Cruise in TOP GUN Sequel After All

KF9wWXI.jpg

Glen Powell will be headed into the danger zone, after all. The actor, who stars in Netlix’s Set It Up, is in talks to join the cast of Paramount’s Top Gun sequel.

The move happens after Powell was in contention for — and lost — the part of Goose’s son, which will be played by Miles Teller.

Joseph Kosinski, who directed Cruise in the sci-fi thriller Oblivion, is directing the long-in-the-works sequel to the seminal 1986 movie that starred Tom Cruise as the hotshot pilot with the call sign Maverick.

In June, young Hollywood actors were champing at the bit to play the son of Goose, Maverick’s wingman who dies in a tragic accident in the original movie. The testing process, which involved flying to Cruise’s home in Clearwater, Florida, saw the finalists come down to Powell and Teller, with Teller ultimately winning.

But Cruise, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and execs at Paramount and Skydance were so impressed with Powell that they tried to find another part for the actor. In fact, the movie’s makers are so intent on having Powell that they are beefing up the role for him.

Details of Powell's role are being kept in the hangar. Powell played astronaut John Glenn in Hidden Figures and appeared in Scream Queens.

Mel Gibson and Colin Farrell to Star in World War II Revenge Thriller WAR PIGS

Mel Gibson and Colin Farrell have boarded War Pigs, a World War II action pic for Millennium Films to be directed by Tommy Wirkola, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Farrell will play Drex and Gibson fills the role of The Pastor in a project penned by Nick Ball and John Niven that follows ex-soldiers out for revenge against a gang that killed one of their own and stole their drug money.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian of di Bonaventura Productions will produce alongside Matt Berenson.

In addition to War Pigs, Gibson is set to helm Destroyer, a World War II naval war movie from Hollywood Gang Productions, marking his follow-up to Hacksaw Ridge, the 2016 war drama that served as his directorial comeback.

Farrell appeared in Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and A24’s The Lobster, while also starring in Saving Mr. Banks, Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled and Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

KRAVEN THE HUNTER Movie in the Works at Sony with The Equalizer 2 Writer

WmzqDC6.jpg

Hot off the success of The Equalizer 2, screenwriter Richard Wenk is being brought on to write a Kraven the Hunter movie for Sony Pictures, multiple sources tell Collider.

Back in June 2017, THR reported that Sony was planning to expand the Spider-Man universe with films like Silver & Black, while “other projects will focus on Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio,” so news of the solo Kraven project itself is more than a year old. However, now that Sony is in the process of hiring a writer, it’s a strong sign that the studio is getting serious about expanding the non-Spider-Man Spidey universe and that the Kraven movie is heating up.

Also known as Sergei Kravinoff, Kraven the Hunter is one of Spider-Man’s best known and most formidable enemies, as well as the half-brother of the Chameleon. The character has appeared in numerous Spider-Man properties including animated series, video games and of course, the Marvel comics, including the popular story Kraven’s Last Hunt. Kraven is known for hunting big game, but what is Kraven without his white whale Spider-Man, who he considers his ultimate trophy? That’s what Wenk will be tasked with figuring out, as Spider-Man himself is still tied up solely in the Marvel Cinematic Universe while films like Kravenand Venom exist in their own separate universe with no Marvel Studios oversight. Wenk will also be tasked with introducing Kraven the Hunter to movie audiences, as the character has never appeared on the big screen before.

Sources say that Sony executive Palak Patel has been instrumental in exploring new directions to take the Spidey universe under the supervision of Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch. Patel isn’t in charge of Sony’s universe of Marvel characters in the way that Walter Hamada is in charge of DC movies at Warner Bros. — for example, Patel isn’t involved in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which was overseen by Kristine Belson at Sony Pictures Animation, who reports directly to Tom Rothman — but as one of Panitch’s direct reports, he is often pulled into development meetings for films based on Marvel characters. So while Patel did work on Venom, he also worked on Superfly, so Marvel movies are hardly his sole focus at Sony.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout Star Rebecca Ferguson Joins MEN IN BLACK Spinoff

X6GMuls.jpg

After spending time with IMF agents in Mission: Impossible — Fallout, Rebecca Ferguson is taking on another top secret agency. Ferguson is set to appear in Sony's Men in Black spinoff, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Fate of the Furious filmmaker F. Gary Gray is directing an ensemble cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson, Les Twins, Kumail Nanjiani, Rafe Spall, and Emma Thompson as the head of the secret agency.

Art Marcum and Matt Holloway penned the script for the Men in Black spinoff, which aims to push the franchise — originally starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as alien fighting secret agents — into a bigger, global scale. Original Men in Black producers Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are back as producers, while Steven Spielberg returns as executive producer.

Sony has the spinoff dated for a June 14, 2019 release.

Ferguson is coming off her role as former MI6 agent Ilsa Faust in Mission: Impossible — Fallout, which earned a franchise best $61.5 million last weekend at the North American box office, in addition to strong praise for her action-heavy performance. She is also set to appear in Doctor Sleep, Warner Bros.' sequel to The Shining.

SUPERGIRL Movie in the Works at Warner Bros. with The Cloverfield Paradox Writer

sFnWIsd.jpg

Supergirl may be flying onto the big screen. Oren Uziel — one of the writers behind 22 Jump Street and The Cloverfield Paradox — has been tapped to pen a feature for DC and Warner Bros. about the Krypton-born superhero, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Superman’s older cousin — she didn’t physically age in transit to Earth, and arrived later than he did, explaining why she looks younger than him — Kara Zor-El debuted in 1959’s Action Comics No. 252, created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino. Initially working in secret at the request of her cousin, she went public as Supergirl in 1962’s Action Comics No. 285, in a story subtly titled “The World’s Greatest Heroine!” After years spent in Superman’s shadow, she eventually gained her own comic book in 1972.

Supergirl has already been spun off into a movie in 1984, starring Faye Dunaway and Mia Farrow. The character is also the subject of a massively popular CW show from Greg Berlanti starring Melissa Benoist that is heading into its fourth season.

WB/DC is already in development on several female-fronted properties, including a Batgirl movie. Joss Whedon was originally attached to that project but later exited, with Bumblebee scruoter Christina Hodson taking over screenplay duties. Recently, Cathy Yan was tapped to direct a Harley Quinn stand-alone movie (based on the Birds of Prey property) that was also penned by Hodson.

I would be severely disappointed if they don't climb over a wall at some point in the movie.

Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth No Longer Set to Star in STAR TREK 4 as Talks Fall Through

5OMLlCu.jpg

Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth are no longer boldly going where no person has gone before. The two actors were in negotiations to star in Star Trek 4 but sources say that talks between the two actors and the companies making the new installment, Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media, have fallen apart, with both sides walking away from the table.

Dealmaking with other returning castmembers — including Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and John Cho — was expected to follow.

Pine was due to reprise his role as iconic sci-fi hero Captain Kirk, which he has inhabited for three movies, while Hemsworth was to have played his father in a time-traveling adventure. (Hemsworth played the role in the prologue in the 2009 movie that rebooted the franchise.)

The deal points came down to the usual suspect: money. Pine and Hemsworth, among Hollywood’s A-list when starring in DC or Marvel movies, are said to be asking the studios to stick to existing deals. Paramount, according to insiders, contends that Trek is not like a Marvel or Star Wars movie and is trying to hold the line on a budget.

The actors, according to sources, insist they have deals in place and that the studios are reneging on them, forcing them to take pay cuts as they try to budget a movie that is following a mediocre performer.

Pine, at least, has had a deal in place for several years. The actor, now a key player in the Wonder Womanfranchise, signed up for a fourth movie when he made his deal for 2016's Star Trek Beyond. Hemsworth has been attached to Trek 4 since Paramount, then run by the previous regime headed by Brad Grey, announced the fourth installment in 2016, although his exact status remains murky.

The studio, however, is backing its budget tough talk with past performance numbers. The last movie, Star Trek Beyond, grossed only $343 million worldwide on a budget of $190 million. In fact, one insider says the companies lost money on the movie.

The 2009 reboot that kicked off this run of movies, titled simply Star Trek, made $386 million while 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, is the top earner of any Trek movie, with $467 million. Meanwhile, Marvel, DC, or Star Warsmovies regularly gross north of $700 million if not hitting $1 billion. Not for lack of trying, the Trek movies seem to have a ceiling, especially globally.

It is unclear what the next step is for Trek 4. The project could recast Kirk and his father. Or perhaps the two sides could come back to the table.

Either way, Paramount and Skydance insiders say the movie, also produced by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot, remains a priority development and is not being put on hold. Adding a veneer of enterprise to the project is that for the first time in the franchise history, a female director, S. J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones, Succession), is sitting in the captain’s chair.
