Jon Hamm, Ed Harris and Lewis Pullman Join Tom Cruise in TOP GUN: MAVERICK

Following yesterday's major casting news, Deadline has now learned that Paramount is adding some additional star power to Tom Cruise's long-awaited action sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, casting Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Ed Harris (Westworld), and Lewis Pullman (Bad Times at the El Royale) in key roles.

The trio join a Cruise-led cast that will also feature Val Kilmer (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Jennifer Connelly (Only The Brave), Miles Teller (Whiplash), Glen Powell (Set It Up), Monica Barbaro (Splitting Up Together), Charles Parnell (A Million Little Pieces), Jay Ellis (Insecure), Bashir Salahuddin (GLOW), and Danny Ramirez (Assassination Nation).

The report notes that up-and-comer Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit), who had been set to play Connelly's daughter, bowed out of the project earlier today due to a scheduling conflict.

Joe Kosinski (Oblivion; Only The Brave; Tron: Legacy) is directing with a script from Peter Craig (The Town), Justin Marks (The Jungle Book), and Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle). Jerry Bruckheimer is back on board as a producer alongside Cruise and David Ellison.

While production began at the beginning of June with Cruise filming scenes on a very familiar motorcycle, principal photography is not expected to begin with the entire cast until early next month. Plot details remain under wraps for now, but the film will reportedly be set in a world of drone technology and fifth generation fighters and will also explore the end of the era of dogfighting.

LOST Star Dominic Monaghan Reuniting with J.J. Abrams for STAR WARS: EPISODE IX

p6fYR2n.jpg

Lost star Dominic Monaghan is reuniting with J.J. Abrams. The actor has been cast in Star Wars: Episode IX, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Monaghan rose to prominence thanks to his role as the lovable Hobbit Merry in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, and starred as Charlie Pace on the Abrams-produced Lost from 2004-10 on ABC. He appeared in Duncan Jones' Netflix movie Mute this year.

The actor has been vocal about his interest appearing in a Star Wars movie, and has spoken about broaching the subject with Abrams after the director signed up for 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. At the time, Abrams told him he was building a cast of unknowns, akin to the stars of the original 1977 film. Monaghan's role in Episode IX is unknown.

Episode IX, directed by Abrams, began production earlier this month. Its cast includes Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo and Billie Lourd. New stars include Naomi Ackie, Logan actor Richard E. Grant and Keri Russell, while original Star Wars actors returning include Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels and Billy Dee Williams. Carrie Fisher will appear as Leia via unused footage from The Force Awakens.

Monaghan who has been sharing cryptic Star Wars teases on social media Friday. Disney and Lucasfilm open Star Wars: Episode IX on Dec. 20, 2019.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Put on Hold as Crew Members Dismissed and Marvel/Disney Regroups on Project

NriOdnZ.jpg

The production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is being put on hold for the time being as Marvel and Disney regroup on the project, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Sources say that crew members, at this stage a small group that was prepping for pre-production, are being dismissed and are free to look for new work.

The Marvel project was to have been directed by James Gunn and was to have begun principal photography in the winter, either in January or February. The project was crewing up and was to have gone into full pre-production mode in the fall.

But Gunn was let go as the director in July when old tweets were resurfaced, likely in response to his vocal political posts. And while some held out hope that the director would be given a reprieve by Disney, a mid-August meeting with Disney chairman Alan Horn closed the door on that.

One person characterized the production hold as temporary and more of a "regrouping" as Marvel and Disney look for a filmmaker to take on the third installment of a franchise that has grossed over $1.6 billion and made stars out of Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana.

"The timeline has been pushed out," says a source. Disney never set a release date for Guardians 3.

Marvel and Disney are taking a measured approach in their search for a filmmaker (one source says that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi recently had a meeting with Marvel but it is unclear what project was discussed) and with good reason.

The controversial firing has rankled the cast which in an open letter asked the studio to reinstate Gunn. Bautista, who plays the alien warrior Drax, has continued to show his disappointment on social media, and on Thursday he tagged Disney in a tweet featuring disturbing clips of Mike Cernovich, one of the conservative figures who led a campaign to get Gunn fired.

Alec Baldwin to Play Bruce Wayne's Father, Thomas Wayne, in JOKER Standalone Origin Movie

RyUUBFx.jpg

Alec Baldwin is joining Joaquin Phoenix in Joker, Warner Bros.' standalone movie centered on the DC’s clown prince of crime.

Baldwin is the latest high-profile actor to join the project, which is scheduled to behind shooting in two weeks. Robert De Niro, Deadpool 2 breakout Zazie Beetz and Glow actor Marc Maron are already on the call sheet.

Phoenix is portraying the DC Comics villain in a film that is more moderately budgeted and darker than the studio’s other DC-based movies, known as the DC Cinematic Universe. The project is also described as more of a dark character study than a crime thriller, with Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy as the tonal watchwords.

Baldwin has been tapped for the role of Thomas Wayne, who is Batman lore is the father of Bruce Wayne, the future Batman.

But this being a movie project that will veer off center from the traditional Batman cannon, sources say that the script paints Thomas Wayne as a cheesy and tanned businessman who is more in the mold of a 1980s Donald Trump.

Baldwin already has plenty of experience playing Trump via Saturday Night Live, which recently earned him a second Emmy nomination for the role. The actor currently can be seen onscreen in the Paramount hit Mission: Impossible — Fallout, and recently wrapped a role in Motherless Brooklyn, a crime drama being made by Warners.

Doctor Who Star Matt Smith Joins STAR WARS: EPISODE IX in a Mystery Key Role

5X2ViTA.jpg

From the Whoniverse, to Buckingham Palace, to a galaxy far, far away. Sources tell Variety that “The Crown” star Matt Smith is joining “Star Wars: Episode IX,” which is currently in production in the U.K. It’s unknown at this time whether the “Doctor Who” alum will be on the side of the rebels or the evil empire.

Smith joins returning cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver, as well as newcomers Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan, and Naomi Ackie. Billy Dee Williams is reprising his role as Lando Calrissian, and Carrie Fisher will be featured as Leia Organa in the final installment of the Skywalker saga, using previously unreleased footage shot for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Fisher died in December 2016 at the age of 60.

Mark Hamill will be returning as Luke Skywalker and Anthony Daniels will reprise his role at C-3PO.

Abrams helmed “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and returned to direct this latest installment after Colin Trevorrow exited following creative differences. Abrams filled the role last fall and has spent most of that time working on the script with Chris Terrio. Kathleen Kennedy is producing the pic.

Smith is coming off his Emmy-nominated performance as Prince Philip in Netflix’s “The Crown,” which was also his final season as all the major roles for the third season have been recast. Smith can be seen next in “Charlie Says,” in which he plays Charles Manson. That pic premieres at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday.

Alec Baldwin Drops Out of Warner Bros.' JOKER Origin Movie Due to "Scheduling Issues"

RyUUBFx.jpg

Alec Baldwin says he has dropped out of Joker, the standalone featuring the DC villain that is starring Joaquin Phoenix. "I'm no longer doing that movie," Baldwin told USA Today.

On Monday, news broke that Baldwin was in talks to play Thomas Wayne in Todd Phillips' Joker standalone movie.

In comic book lore, Thomas Wayne is a physician, philanthropist and father to Bruce Wayne (the future Batman). Sources told The Hollywood Reporter Monday that in a departure from the comics, the Joker script called for Thomas Wayne to be a cheesy and tanned businessman who is more in the mold of a 1980s Donald Trump.

Baldwin is citing "scheduling issues" as his reason for dropping out. But Wednesday he also addressed the new take on Wayne.

Baldwin, who recently earned a second Emmy nomination for playing Trump on Saturday Night Live, tweeted Wednesday that he had not "been hired to play a role in Todd Phillips’ JOKER as some Donald Trump manque. That is not happening."

Phoenix is playing the Joker, while other stars include Robert De Niro, Deadpool 2 breakout Zazie Beetz and Glow actor Marc Maron. The film is set to begin shooting in two weeks. Warner Bros. is due to open Joker on Oct. 4, 2019.

Trailer for I THINK WE'RE ALONE NOW Starring Peter Dinklage, Elle Fanning

Del (Peter Dinklage) is alone in the world. After the human race is wiped out, he lives in his small, empty town, content in his solitude and the utopia he's methodically created for himself - until he is discovered by Grace (Elle Fanning), an interloper whose history and motives are obscure. Worse yet, she wants to stay.

That last predator trailer is fantastic

It makes me feel like movie-goers have more taste than Hollywood credits them for having, after hearing 'The Happytime Murders' has only made $15 Million in boxoffice, on a $40 Million budget, and an untold marketing budget that forced to YouTube viewers to watch shitty trailers for that movie for two weeks.

After being in theaters for a week, it looks like its not even going to come close to making its production budget back.

And, the cherry on top of this flop, Melissa McCarthy is in it, so maybe this'll be another nail in her acting career coffin.

Mission: Impossible Star Rebecca Ferguson in Talks to Join Denis Villeneuve's DUNE

unRq8fg.jpg

Mission: Impossible headliner Rebecca Ferguson is in negotiations to star opposite Timothee Chalamet in Dune, Legendary’s adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel being directed by Denis Villeneuve.

The company is eyeing an early 2019 production start for the ambitious project, which Villeneuve is producing along with Mary Parent and Cale Boyter.

Dune, initially published in the 1960s, tackles political, religious and environmental themes through a sci-fi lens, telling the complex story of a fallen noble family’s attempt to control of a desert planet named Arrakis and its export, a rare spice drug, while being betrayed by a galactic emperor.

Chalamet is playing Paul Atreides, the son of the ruler of the family, who is forced to escape into the desert wastelands and partner with its nomadic tribes. Using enhanced mental abilities, he eventually rises to become their ruler, with the nomads believing he is their messiah, and leads an army to overthrow the empire.

Ferguson will play Atreides’ mother, Lady Jessica, who escapes with him into the desert and helps him become a savior in their eyes.

Villeneuve, Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts wrote the script. Thomas Tull is executive producing along with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert for the Frank Herbert estate. Author Kevin J. Anderson is serving as a creative consultant.

The novel, which launched a book series that lasted beyond Herbert’s death, was first adapted into a 1984 film directed by David Lynch with Kyle MacLachlan as the lead and which bombed at the box office.

Ferguson broke out to American audiences with Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, playing operative Isla Faust, who goes tit-for-tat with Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. It is a role that is reprised in this summer’s Fallout, one of the best reviewed movies of the year and a box-office hit, generating almost $670 million worldwide to date.

The actress is also part of the ensemble of the new Men In Black movie and is set to shoot the Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep later this year.
