First Look at Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan in MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS

image

The 16th-century rivalry between the Queen of Scots and the Virgin Queen was personal — though it didn’t have to be. “They were both, in their own ways, making huge sacrifices to try to operate in this male-dominated world,” explains Josie Rourke, a theater director whose feature debut, Mary, Queen of Scots, examines the rift between the young cousins. “It’s not one against the other. It’s both of them against a particular environment that pitted them against each other.”

Penned by House of Cards creator Beau Willimon and based on a biography by historian John Guy, the film explores the rulers’ lives after Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan) returns to Scotland a widowed former queen of France. Her arrival threatens the English throne — then held by Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie) — and ushers in a fraught political period during which the dueling crowns are surrounded by scheming counselors. “Everyone manipulated their relationship,” Robbie says. “It’s complicated, it’s tragic, and it’s bizarre. The only other person in the world who could understand the position they were in was each other.”

Mary, Queen of Scots arrives in theaters Nov. 2, 2018.

First Look at Keira Knightley in THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS

image-casse-noisette-quatre-royaume-02-1068x712.jpg

Before Alice stumbled into Wonderland and Dorothy blew into Oz, there was Marie, the young heroine of “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” who was whisked to a magical world of toy soldiers and militant mice in E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 German fairy tale. Tchaikovsky’s celebrated 1892 ballet renamed her Masha, or Clara, but now, in The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, a new fantasy drama in the vein of The Chronicles of Narnia that pulls from both the ballet and fairy tale, she has a name that just might stick. And EW has your exclusive first look at the film right here.

Clara, in this vibrant adaptation helmed by Lasse Hallström (Chocolat), is brainy and bold. “She’s very smart and independent,” says 17-year-old Mackenzie Foy (Interstellar), who plays her. “She loves to think and find the fastest way to solve a problem.” Clara has lost the magical key that will unlock a priceless gift from her mother. To get it back, she must travel across the Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers, and Land of Sweets, where she meets Keira Knightley’s Sugar Plum Fairy. “Clara is just fascinated with her,” Foy says.

But not everything is candy-coated fantasy: There’s also the foreboding Fourth Realm, ruled by Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren). “She’s a fierce character,” Mirren says, “with a modern edge.” But fans craving the classic need not fear. The film nods to Tchaikovsky’s score and has a ballet sequence featuring Misty Copeland. “Pretending to be in these imaginative worlds, it’s why I wanted to become an actress,” Mirren says. “It’s my dream come true, really.”

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms arrives Nov. 2, 2018.

Dexter Fletcher Replaces Bryan Singer as Director for BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

uBkUDgI.jpg

Fox has replaced Bryan Singer on Bohemian Rhapsody with Dexter Fletcher, the director of the films Eddie the Eagle and Wild Bill. Fletcher will resume production next week.

There are about two weeks left on the film, unless Fletcher decides to reshoot scenes. The filmmaker will then oversee postproduction as Fox hopes to keep the film on track for December 2018. It will be a good warm-up for Fletcher, who’s also attached to direct the biopic on Elton John.

Singer was fired from the film because of a pattern of unreliability, culminating in him not returning from the Thanksgiving break and being AWOL for three days. He also clashed with Rami Malek, The Mr. Robot star who plays Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Singer’s reps disputed part of that narrative, claiming he has been dealing with a health issue with his mother, something that didn’t sway the studio in making the switch. Those reps also argued Singer had patched things up with Malek.

Fletcher started as an actor in the Matthew Vaughn films Kick-Ass and Stardust. Vaughn produced Eddie the Eagle for Fox.

The studio began canvassing for replacement directors even before Singer went AWOL after Thanksgiving, sources said. Fox denies this, and the studio denies that anyone but Fletcher was offered the job once Singer was sacked. Deadline's sources said that the film didn’t appeal to everyone. The payday will be big, but it will be a lot of work, and it is entirely up to the DGA whether Fletcher will get directing credit on the film, considering that Singer was almost finished with principal photography when he was removed. The original directors of World War Z and the Star Wars spinoff Rogue One remained the directors of record, even though the reshoots were supervised by others.

Still, Fox managed the crisis well by securing a filmmaker the studio trusts, in time to keep the postponement brief.

Yeah I've seen it, forgot to post it. Looks interesting but the trailer is not very polished. Joaquin looks more and more like Mel Gibson. His casting in Signs as Mel's son brother was spot-on.

Bryan Singer Fired from Directing BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY After On-Set Chaos

jjaBhYL.png

Bryan Singer has been fired from the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, 20th CenturyFox has told THR. “Bryan Singer is no longer the director of Bohemian Rhapsody," the studio said in a statement.

The decision reflected an escalating clash between Singer and actor Rami Malek and was caused by Singer's being missing from the set, necessitating the Dec. 1 production shutdown of the film in which Malek stars as Freddie Mercury, frontman of the rock group Queen, which has been shooting in London.

In announcing the shutdown last week, producers Fox, New Regency and Graham King initially said filming was being suspended because of Singer's "unexpected unavailability."

Trouble began when Singer went missing during production on several occasions. His no-shows resulted in cinematographer Thomas Newton Sigel having to step in to helm some of the days while Singer was absent.

Tom Hollander, who plays Queen manager Jim Beach, also is said to have briefly quit the film because of Singer's behavior, but was persuaded to return, according to one source.

Malek complained to the studio, charging Singer with not being present on set, unreliability and unprofessionalism.

Singer had been warned before production began by both Fox Film chairman and CEO Stacey Snider and Fox Film vice chairman and president of production Emma Watts that they wouldn't tolerate any unprofessional behavior on his part. A representative from the Directors Guild of America also arrived on set to monitor the situation.

The growing tension led to a confrontation between Singer and Malek, which, while it did not become physical, did involve Singer throwing an object. Subsequently, however, the two are said to have settled their differences and filming was expected to resume.

But then Singer did not return to the set after the Thanksgiving break and is believed to have been in the U.S. for about the last 10 days, according to one source. In his absence, Sigel stepped in to helm several days of shooting before the production was shut down. Singer's prolonged absence was the final straw, and so the studio decided to terminate him under his pay-or-play contract.

According to another insider, Singer has claimed he is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder because of the tensions on the set.

The studio, which has about two more weeks of principal photography remaining on the film, is expected to name a new director within the next few days.

Ian Chen and Jovan Armand Cast as Billy Batson's Friends in SHAZAM!

N2a65qq.jpg

DC's upcoming Shazam! movie just added two new cast members. Ian Chen (Fresh off the Boat) and Jovan Armand (Bella and the Bulldogs) are reportedly set to join the film, according to Deadline.

Chen will be playing Eugene and Armand will be playing Pedro, both of whom are friends of Billy Batson/Shazam (Asher Angel) in his group home.

For those who are familiar with Shazam's DC Comics world, it isn't too hard to see why Eugene and Pedro are involved. Billy's childhood ensemble - of Eugene, Pedro, Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer) and Darla Dudley - factors into the comics quite a bit. In the Flashpoint timeline (something that will factor into the DC Extended Universe very soon), the group even become superpowered members of the Marvel Family.

As of right now, it's too early to tell if the kids will just remain childhood peers of Billy, or will fully transform into their superpowered counterparts in a later film. But their presence does add another layer to Billy's world, and bring an array of misfit characters onto the screen.

The cast of Shazam! will also include Zachary Levi as Billy's adult alter-ego, Mark Strong as Dr. Sinvana, and Grace Fulton in a currently-undisclosed role. And as Shazam! director David F. Sandberg recently teased, a whole slew of casting announcements are still to come. Shazam! is set to be released on April 5, 2019.

Woody Harrelson in Talks to Join Tom Hardy in Sony's VENOM Movie

MpI31It.jpg

Woody Harrelson has joined Tom Hardy in Sony’s Venom movie. Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, and Jenny Slate are also on board, with Ruben Fleischer directing.

Although character details are sparse, sources say Harrelson will play a henchman of sorts. Sony had no comment on the casting.

Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji) and Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower) will write the script for Venom, with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing the movie, along with Amy Pascal. Palak Patel and Eric Fineman are overseeing the project for Columbia Pictures. Venom hits theaters on Oct. 5, 2018.

Since his inception in 1988, Venom has been one of Spider-Man’s most popular characters, making it a top priority for the studio to get the movie off the ground. Venom made his big-screen debut in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, where he was portrayed by Topher Grace.

Harrelson has kept busy over the past couple of years appearing in LBJ, The Edge of Seventeen, The Glass Castle, and War for the Planet of the Apes.

He most recently wrapped production on Solo: A Star Wars Story and has been earning rave reviews for his role in Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri.

Seth Rogen to Play Newscaster Walter Cronkite in David Gordon Green's NEWSFLASH

RIS9nGQ.jpg

Seth Rogen will play legendary anchor Walter Cronkite in the upcoming film “Newsflash,” centered on CBS’ coverage of the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

David Gordon Green is directing the drama from Ben Jacoby’s script. Former Warner Bros. production president Greg Silverman is producing through his Stampede Ventures, along with Adam Kolbrenner of Madhouse Entertainment.

Cronkite, who began working as a radio announcer in 1935, had been named the anchor of CBS’ nightly newscast in 1962. The pic will also feature include Cronkite, newsman Dan Rather, producer Don Hewitt, and CBS network president James Aubrey.

The network broke into its broadcast of “As the World Turns” for Cronkite to announce that Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. CBS returned to the soap opera, then interrupted it again with Cronkite’s announcement of Kennedy’s death: “From Dallas, Texas, the flash, apparently official: President Kennedy died at 1 p.m. Central Standard Time. 2 o’clock Eastern Standard Time, some 38 minutes ago.”

Cronkite, 46 at the time, was referred to as “the most trusted man in America.” He retired in 1981 and died in 2009.

Rogen stars in James Franco’s “The Disaster Artist.” His dramatic roles include “50/50” and “Steve Jobs,” portraying Steve Wozniak.

Green’s credits include “Pineapple Express,” “The Sitter,” “Manglehorn,” “Joe,” and Jake Gyllenhaal’s “Stronger.” He’s attached to direct the reboot of “Halloween” starring Jamie Lee Curtis.

Joe Johnston to Direct THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS Reshoots

SBmln6N.jpg

The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is going to need a little more sprinkling of sugar. Disney is gearing up for a significant shoot of additional photography for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, the studio’s big-budget fantasy that adapts the classic ballet by Peter Tchaikovsky and the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann.

Joe Johnston, the helmer of Captain America: The First Avenger, The Rocketeer and Jurassic Park III, is being brought in to direct the shoot, not the movie’s original helmer, Lasse Hallstrom.

Insiders say that Hallstrom, known for dramas such as What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Cider House Rules and A Dog’s Purpose, has not been sidelined but rather was unavailable due to scheduling issues and that he will be involved with postproduction.

The cast, consisting of Keira Knightley, Mackenzie Foy, ballerina Misty Copeland and Morgan Freeman, among others, is pirouetting in place for the shoot, which sources say will last 32 days and comes armed with material written by Tom McCarthy, the Oscar winner behind the drama Spotlight.

"The film is in very good hands in London while I'm away,” Hallstrom said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “I will return to postproduction after the holidays.”

It is unclear what issues arose to warrant reshoots, but in this day of massive tentpole filmmaking, where much of a visual effects-heavy movie is put together in postproduction, Disney, among other studios, sees these undertakings as par for the course. Movies such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story have shown that spending additional millions on reshaping material can pay off big dividends in the end, or in the case of Justice League, help protect the tarnishing of a brand.

Nutcracker tells of a young girl named Clara (Foy) who receives a nutcracker doll from her godfather on Christmas Eve. When she goes to check on it later, the clock strikes midnight and she finds herself thrust into a fantastical world where she is in the middle of a war between gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice.

Knightley is portraying the Sugar Plum Fairy, while Helen Mirren is playing Mother Ginger. Mark Gordon and Larry Franco are producing while Sara Smith and Lindy Goldstein are executive producing. The movie has a Nov. 2, 2018, release date.

Regina Hall is in negotiations to join New Line Cinema's Shaft sequel, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Tim Story is directing the movie, which is seen as a continuation of the story of the private detective that first appeared in the 1971 blaxploitation action pic that became a pop culture phenomenon. Hall is in talks to play Shaft's former love interest and Usher's onscreen mother. Alexandra Shipp and the original Shaft, Richard Roundtree, are among the confirmed cast.

Kenya Barris and Alex Barnow wrote the script. Barris is also producing with John Davis, with Marc Fischer and Ira Napoliello serving as executive producers. The movie is scheduled for a June 14, 2019, release.

Hall most recently starred in Universal's hit comedy Girls Trip and appeared on HBO's Insecure and ABC's Black-ish. Her upcoming films include Fox 2000's adaptation of The Hate U Give and Andrew Bujalski's indie comedy Support the Girls.
