Gerard Butler to Join Alex Proyas' Epic Fantasy GODS OF EGYPT

Gerard-Butler-Image-Black-White-Dragonlord.jpg

Gerard Butler is in negotiations to play a villainous god opposite Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaimie Lannister in HBO's Game of Thrones) in Summit's epic fantasy Gods of Egypt. The story is set in the aftermath of when one ruling god, Set, kills another, Osiris. When Osiris' son Horus fails in his attempt to get revenge and has his eye plucked out, it's up to a young human thief in love with a slave to help defeat the angry god.

Coster-Waldau is portraying Horus. If a deal is made, Butler will play Set, the god of the desert. The movie is looking to go in the new year in Australia. Alex Proyas (The Crow, Dark City) is directing the film from a screenplay by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. God of Egypt is decidedly fantastical territory and comes just after Proyas’ planned Paradise Lost adaptation was scrapped due to budget issues.

First Trailer for NEED FOR SPEED Starring Aaron Paul

Need-for-Speed-First-Trailer-Dragonlord.jpg

DreamWorks has released the first trailer for director Scott Waugh’s (Act of Valor) video game adaptation Need for Speed. Judging by the trailer, Need for Speed is almost the opposite of what people were expecting. Many assumed it would simply try to rival the Fast & Furious movies, and instead it looks far more dramatic. There’s no rule that an adaptation of a video game can’t be serious, and the car stuff looks good. The film stars Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Kid Cudi, Ramon Rodriguez, Rami Malek, Harrison Gilbertson, Dakota Johnson, and Michael Keaton. Need for Speed opens in theaters on March 14, 2014.

Synopsis: The story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country race against time—one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. In a last attempt to save his struggling garage, blue-collar mechanic Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul)—who with his team skillfully builds and races muscle cars on the side—reluctantly partners with wealthy, arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). Just as a major sale to car broker Julia Bonet (Imogen Poots) looks like it will save the business, a disastrous, unsanctioned race results in Dino framing Tobey for manslaughter.

Two years later and fresh out of prison, Tobey is set on revenge with plans to take down Dino in the high-stakes De Leon race—the Super Bowl of underground racing. To get there in time, Tobey must run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet, dodging cops coast-to-coast and dealing with fallout from a dangerous bounty Dino put on his car. With his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia as allies, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.

Comments: The trailer looks surprisingly good. I thought this was going to be another Fast & Furious copycat. Instead it kinda looks like what I thought Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive was supposed to be like after watching the first trailer.

Geoffrey Rush Joins Alex Proyas' Epic Fantasy GODS OF EGYPT

Geoffrey-Rush-Image-Dragonlord.jpg

Geoffrey Rush has closed a deal to join Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) and Gerard Butler in Summit's epic fantasy Gods of Egypt. Alex Proyas is directing the project, whose story is set in motion when one ruling god, Set, kills another, Osiris. When Osiris' son Horus fails in his attempt to get revenge, and has his eyed plucked out, it's up to a young human thief in love with a slave to help defeat the mad god.

Coster-Waldau is playing Horus. Butler is in talks to play Set, the god of the desert. Rush will play the sun god Ra, the father of Set and Osiris who is also Set’s ultimate target. Proyas will share screenwriting credits with Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazamat. Rush, who has spent the last decade nicely chewing scenery as the pirate Barbossa in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, has The Book Thief, the adaptation of the Markus Zusak novel, coming out in theaters Nov. 15.

Drew Pearce Says RUNAWAYS Movie Shelved Due to AVENGERS

Marvel-Runaways-Crying-Dragonlord.jpg

Last summer, it wasn't just an alien invasion and rogue Asgardian trickster that Marvel's the Avengers stopped dead in their tracks. According to Iron Man 3 co-writer Drew Pearce, the success of last year's superhero team-up killed the movie version of Brian K. Vaughan's Runaways at the studio, as well. Talking at a podcast, Pearce explained that the adaptation of Vaughan's 2003 Marvel series -- about a group of teenagers who discover that their parents are actually supervillains -- was shelved after Avengers became such a big deal.

"We were really close to being made, and then this movie started to happen called The Avengers," explained Pearce, whose screenplay for the project was his first work for Marvel. "Oddly, it pulled focus from the unheard-of brand Runaways, and it really did kind of consume the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's there -- maybe it'll be a Phase Three movie. I really hope so. I'm really proud of it and I think it'll be a brilliant film, but I think it all depends what Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel, his master plan is."

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black called Pearce's screenplay "one of the better screenplays that's sitting on a shelf somewhere," but warned that anyone waiting for a Runaways Phase Three movie will be waiting for awhile. "They make two [movies] a year, but that's still at least three years down the line [until they run out of films already in progress]."
