Matt Bomer Joins Shane Black's Noir Film THE NICE GUYS

Matt-Bomer-093014-Dragonlord.jpg

Matt Bomer has been set to star opposite Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe in The Nice Guys, the action drama that Iron Man 3‘s Shane Black wrote and is directing with Joel Silver producing at Warner Bros. It has taken some time, but Bomer is getting his movie chance now. As his USA show White Collar ends this fall after its six-season run, Bomer now is focused on big-screen opportunities. That effort was helped by the chops he displayed in a heartbreaking turn as Felix Turner in HBO’s The Normal Heart, which got Bomer an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor category. Bomer also is attached to play actor Montgomery Clift in the biopic Monty Clift.

Black’s Nice Guys takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, and Gosling plays a detective hired by a gangster (Crowe) to find a missing girl. In the process, he uncovers a dangerous conspiracy, and that is where Bomer’s character comes in. The studio also set Margaret Qually, star of HBO’s The Leftovers, to play the lead female role, the daughter of a corrupt chief justice who figures in the scandal.

LONDON HAS FALLEN Gets New Director in Babak Najafi

Olympus-Has-Fallen-Poster-600x200-Dragonlord.jpg

Olympus Has Fallen sequel London Has Fallen has a director. Scandinavian helmer Babak Najafi, who directed the Snabba cash sequel Easy Money II: Hard to Kill is in talks to replace Fredrik Bond on the Millennium action movie. Bond left over a week ago with the movie weeks away from shooting. Najafi directed a couple of episodes of Cinemax series Banshee but London will be his English-language feature debut.

Millennium and star Gerard Butler immediately scrambled but last week, things were not looking good. Butler was not liking the directing prospects, and some sources say he was even mulling the idea of leaving the project. Najafi, Wayne Blair (The Sapphires) and Gary Fleder (Runaway Jury) were names that surfaced by mid-week, with Najafi pulling ahead into dealmaking mode.

If a deal makes, Najafi will jump into a shoot that will be in two parts: London will lense for four weeks with principals Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart, Angela Bassett and Melissa Leo. The production will then pause before picking up again in February, this time with Butler, and shoot until April. The two-phase shoot is to accommodate the actor, who is currently filming Geostorm.

First Trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's INHERENT VICE

Inherent-Vice-Witherspoon-Phoenix-Dragonlord.jpg

Warner Bros. has released the highly anticipated first Inherent Vice trailer for filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson’s adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel, and it is glorious. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as private detective Larry “Doc Sportello” who is enlisted to help a former lover thwart a potential kidnapping involving her current billionaire boyfriend.

While PTA has trended a bit darker with his past few films, Inherent Vice looks to be a delightfully goofy romp that’s closer in tone to Boogie Nights than There Will Be Blood. Joaquin Phoenix looks to be absolutely perfect casting as the pothead protagonist. Moreover, the supporting cast appears to be phenomenal as well, with Josh Brolin getting a particularly hilarious standout moment here. Anderson cuts his own trailers so this is likely a very accurate snapshot of the film’s vibe as a whole.

The film also stars Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Jena Malone, and Joanna Newsom. Inherent Vice opens in limited release on December 12th.

Of All Time?

Its weird, I'm drawing a complete blank right now.

Okay, this is going to be off the cuff; so I reserve the right to edit this list at a later date.

Directors: Paul Thomas Anderson, Coen Bros, Wes Anderson, Kubrick, Ang Lee, QT, Scorsese, GDT

Screenwriters PTA, Coen Bros. Kubrick, Wes Anderson, Cameron Crowe, QT, Spike Jonze (still have trouble believing Her was an original work and not based on some 800 page Sci-Fi novel), GDT

Actors: DDL, PSH, Matt Damon (srs), Fassbender, Cruise, Javier Bardem, Brando, Jack, DeNiro, Pacino, Newman, Duvall, Hackman, Bridges, Phoenix

Actresses: Blunt, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Cotillard, Keira Knightly, Naomi Watts, Frances McDormand,

I think I'm better at picking individual movies and appreciating what was great about that movie (director, screenplay, etc). Individuals are like fighters, they have their moments, but they're lucky if they have enough of them before they get stale or start mailing it in. A lot of the folks I listed (esp actors) are living on their rep. I couldn't care less if DeNiro or Pacino were ever in another movie.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 Get New Director and Stars!

Hansel-and-Gretel-Witch-Hunters-092914-Dragonlord.jpg

MNN Exclusive: It was only a few hours ago that it was reported that Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) won't be returning to direct Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2. But in an unexpected twist of events, the Coen Brothers have now signed on to direct the action fantasy sequel with Michael Fassbender and Emily Blunt in final negotiations to replace Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the titular siblings.

3-time Academy Award winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis has also signed on to play the sibling's mentor. Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton are in final talks to play the powerful witch sisters, the main antagonists of the sequel. Though his role is still unknown, Javier Bardem is also on board but stipulates in his contract that his character has to have wacky hair. Judy Greer is set to play a troll via motion capture performance. Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix will have cameo roles as well.

Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson and Spike Jonze are set to pen the script. According to MNN sources, Paramount has already given the greenlight for three more installments of Hansel & Gretel and are in serious talks with a few directors to helm the sequels. If the deal pushes through, the plan is for Ang Lee to direct Part 3, Quentin Tarantino Part 4 and Martin Scorsese Part 5.

Cool Quicksilver Featurette from DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

X-Men-DOFP-Quicksilver-092614-Dragonlord.jpg

The highlight of this summer's X-Men: Days of Future Past was undoubtedly the sequence involving Quicksilver (played by American Horror Story star Evan Peters) breaking Magneto (Michael Fassbender) out of a maximum-security prison. It was playful and light and totally comic book-y, in a way that the rest of the movie was decidedly not. The scene also felt like a true feat of movie magic, something that couldn't be accomplished without a whole bunch of talented artists and technicians working at the absolute top of their game. And thanks to a new behind-the-scenes featurette (likely included in the film's forthcoming home video release), you get a peek at how that magic was accomplished.

The clip shows directed Bryan Singer consulting with a number of stunt performers and visual effects craftspeople. At one point he admits that the stunt, which features a truly elaborate mechanical rig that would spin a stunt performer around a circular room, could have spun "wildly out of control." (Thankfully it did not.) Also of note is the fact that you can see the Phantom cameras that film sequences in a speed of more than 1000 frames per second. Basically – they're like the Quicksilver of cameras.

And, like the very best behind-the-scenes documentaries, knowing how the sequence was put together doesn't lessen its impact. It's still as super cool as it was when X-Men: Days of Future Past was released last May.

Elizabeth Banks and Donald Glover Join MAGIC MIKE XXL

Magic-Mike-092914-Dragonlord.jpg

The sequel to Steven Soderbergh‘s surprise hit Magic Mike has added two more comedic actors, with Elizabeth Banks and Donald Glover joining the male stripper dramedy Magic Mike XXL. The now-filming sequel will see Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello reprising their roles from the first film, though without Matthew McConaughey. XXL is set three years after the events of Magic Mike, and will see the guys on a road trip across the East Coast to one last show in Myrtle Beach.

Amber Heard, Andie McDowell and Jada Pinkett-Smith were previously announced to be joining the sequel, and on Monday NFL player-turned-talk show host Michael Strahan confirmed his role in the film as well, following invitations from Tatum during previous appearances on Live and Michael and Kelly. Glover is best known for his role as Troy on Community — which he left in the middle of season 5. Banks, who is making her feature directorial debut on Pitch Perfect 2, who will next be seen reprising her role as Effie in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.

Synopsis: Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, Magic Mike XXL finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways.

Richard Linklater to Direct THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT

Richard-Linklater-092914-Dragonlord.jpg

Boyhood is surprisingly close to reaching $40 million worldwide to go along with the waves of acclaim for director Richard Linklater. It was recently learned that Linklater plans to capitalize on this buzz to pursue That’s What I’m Talking About, a spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused that Linklater has wanted to make for years. Now he’ll get the chance: Deadline reports Annapurna Pictures has signed on to finance That’s What I’m Talking About. Paramount will release the movie in North America. Annapurna International will sell the foreign rights.

The movie is related tonally to Linklater’s classic Dazed & Confused but whereas that movie was based on Linklater’s 1970s high school life, Talking About is based on his own college experiences in the 1980s. The movie centers on freshmen – played by Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin, Wyatt Russell, among others - who work their way through the first year of college life, as they try to make the baseball team. The movie begins production soon and is the project for which Linklater dropped the big studio special effects-filled tentpole The Incredible Mr. Limpet.

First Trailer for TAK3N Starring Liam Neeson, Forest Whitaker

Tak3n-Banner-093014-Dragonlord.jpg

At the end of Taken 2, it seemed like Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) was on the path of getting back together with his ex-wife (Famke Janssen) and giving his daughter (Maggie Grace) the love he always wanted her to have. But in the first trailer for Taken 3 (or Tak3n if you want to be clever), we see that all that is cut short when Mills is framed for the murder of his ex-wife and is forced to go on the run from the law. Sadly, this time his special set of skills have him looking much more suspicious than heroic as he tries to prove his innocence and find out who is responsible for this tragedy. Taken 3 is directed by Olivier Megaton (Taken 2) and written by Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, The Professional) and Robert Mark Kamen (The Transporter franchise).

Synopsis: Ex-covert operative Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) has his reconciliation with his ex-wife (Famke Janssen) is tragically cut short when she is brutally murdered. Consumed with rage, and framed for the crime, he goes on the run to evade the relentless pursuit of the CIA, FBI and the police. For one last time, Mills must use his
