Screenwriter Jeff Buhler Climbs on to JACOB’S LADDER Remake

Jacobs-Ladder-Blu-Ray-Dragonlord.jpg

Fans of the 1990 Adrian Lyne cult classic Jacob’s Ladder might cringe a bit at the news that a remake is in the works. Jake Wade Well (When a Stranger Calls) penned an early draft and new reports have screenwriter Jeff Buhler (The Midnight Meat Train) signing on to rewrite the script. The original film starred Tim Robbins as a Vietnam war veteran who returns home and attempts to put the horrors of war behind him, but begins experiencing nightmarish visions during his waking hours.

Heat Vision reports that Buhler will handle the new draft of the Jacob’s Ladder remake. Producers are said to be aiming for an homage rather than a direct retread. The story will be updated with contemporary issues, situations and characters, but “still maintain a story that examines issues and poses existential questions.”

Shane Black Talks DOC SAVAGE; Confirms 1930s Setting

20130507-144916.jpg

Coming off the massive success of Iron Man 3, co-writer/director Shane Black chose to return to a bit of a passion project for his next film, an adaptation of the 1930s and 40s pulp fiction hero Doc Savage. The character’s heroic personality and penchant for quests makes for a promising start to an entertaining feature film. In an interview with Collider, Black talks a bit about Doc Savage:

“Doc Savage is a personal film to me. It’s a 1930s pulp character so it hasn’t been around for 75 years or so, but people if they’re introduced to it they’ll get to know, hopefully, what I came to love as a kid. I’ve read those series for 43 years and always wanted to figure out how to crack it.”

“We’re shooting it as though it’s in the 30s, including all the Capra-esque elements of 1930s films like You Can’t Take It With You. The idea of ‘What if Jimmy Stewart were a stone-cold killer?’ basically. It’s that kind of combination which we enjoy. Doc Savage had the abilities of a fighting machine but truly the soul of a pacifist. He always tempered his violent skills with kindness and a social conscience, preferring never to take human life. So, um, perhaps my quote should have more accurately read, ‘potential’ killer.”

Steve McQueen's TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE Moved Up to October 18

Twelve-Years-a-Slave-Fassbender-Ejiofor-Dragonlord.jpg

Release dates for two numerically inclined films have been announced. First up, Fox Searchlight has moved up the release date of director Steve McQueen’s (Shame) period drama Twelve Years a Slave nearly two months, from December 27th to October 18th. The move was made after the studio received highly positive feedback from test screenings, and the Michael Fassbender/Chiwetel Ejiofor-fronted pic will now have a platform release in October, priming it up for awards season recognition.

Focus Features and Universal Pictures will release the E.L. James adaptation Fifty Shades of Grey on August 1, 2014. Though it’s been in active development for some time, the producers only just settled on a director, tapping Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy) to take the helm. The BDSM-heavy pic should make for a nice bit of counterprogramming on the August 1st date, as it will open opposite Marvel’s space-set Guardians of the Galaxy. With a release firmly set, expect some Fifty Shades casting news very soon.

Nymphomaniac-Movie-Dragonlord-1.jpg

The first clip has been released for Lars Von Trier’s upcoming two-part drama, Nymphomaniac. Charlotte Gainsbourg stars as Joe, a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac who recounts her life story to Seligman (Stellan Skarsgard), an old, charming bachelor who finds Jo beaten up in an alley. Joe then recounts to him the story of her erotic life, from birth to the age of fifty. Nymphomanaic will be broken up into eight chapters spread across two films. This clip is from Chapter One, “The Compleat Angler”, and has young Joe (Stacy Martin) and her friend “B” (Sophie Kennedy Clark) preparing to have sex a couple boys in exchange for chocolate.

The film also stars Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Connie Nielsen, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Jean-Marc Barr, and Udo Kier. Nymphomaniac will be released Christmas Day in Denmark. Magnolia will distribute the movie in the U.S., but we don’t know yet if they’ll be distributing both the hardcore and the softcore versions.

2nd Trailer for CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2

Cloudy-Meatballs-2-Dragonlord-0703.jpg

Sony Pictures Animation has released a new domestic and international trailers for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. In the wake of the disastrous food storm at the end of the first movie, Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader), Sam Sparks (Anna Faris) and friends are forced to leave their town of Swallow Falls. But when it is discovered that sentient food beasts have overrun the island, they are asked to return to save the world…again.

It looks to be every bit as zany as the first one and then some, so if you’re worried about directors Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn handling the follow-up, this trailer should put you at ease. If nothing else, enjoy the moments with Steve the scene-stealing simian (voiced by Neil Patrick Harris). The film also features the voices of Andy Samberg, Neil Patrick Harris, Will Forte, and Terry Crews. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 opens on September 27th.

First Teaser Trailer for Laika Animation's THE BOXTROLLS

Boxtrolls-Teaser-Trailer-Family-Dragonlord.jpg

Focus Features has released the first teaser trailer and poster for the upcoming animated feature The Boxtrolls. The film comes from Laika, the stop-motion animation studio behind Coraline and last year’s excellent ParaNorman, and tells the tale of the titular trolls who live underneath the streets of Cheesebridge. Legend has it that the Boxtrolls steal the townspeople’s children and cheese, but the truth of the matter is that the monsters are raising an orphaned human boy named Eggs as one of their own.

This teaser unsurprisingly shows off some gorgeous animation and character creation from Laika, while also teasing a charming story about misunderstood outsiders. In an animation marketplace dominated by unprovoking, inoffensive family fare, Laika is truly doing something unique by telling stories that reflect our ever-changing social culture and the “modern family.”

Directed by Anthony Stacchi (Open Season) and Graham Annable, the film features the voices of Ben Kingsley, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Elle Fanning, Toni Collette, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan. The Boxtrolls is due out September 26, 2014.

First Look at Footage from Disney Animation Studio’s FROZEN

9uspah.jpg

While the first teaser trailer for Walt Disney’s new animated film Frozen has been around for a couple of weeks now, the movie’s introduction didn’t actually feature any of the lead characters. Now, a Japanese trailer gives us our first look at footage from the movie itself. Frozen centers on Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell) and Kristoff (voiced by Jonathan Groff) as they team up to put an end to the icy spell cast by the Snow Queen (voiced by Idina Menzel). Also starring Alan Tudyk and Josh Gad, Frozen opens November 27th.

Synopsis: When a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, Anna (voice of Kristen Bell), a fearless optimist, teams up with extreme mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his sidekick reindeer Sven on an epic journey to find Anna’s sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell. Encountering mystical trolls, an amazing and comedic snowman named Olaf, Everest-like conditions and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.

Joel Edgerton Joins Jeff Nichols' Untitled New Sci-fi Film

10ojpk5.jpg

Last month, Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom, Zero Dark Thirty) held his own against Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby, and Warner Bros. seems to be interested in keeping him around the lot as Variety reports the actor is in talks to join the new untitled sci-fi film from Mud and Take Shelter director Jeff Nichols. Michael Shannon (Man of Steel) is already on board to lead the film which is being kept under tight wraps for now. The only details that have surfaced describe the film as "a present day sci-fi chase film," which sounds completely different than anything Nichols has done in his indie filmmaking past.

When this project first surfaced, we tried to figure out what this mysterious new project might be from various quotes Nichols gave in interviews around the web. The best bet seems to be a project Nichols called Midnight Special. Nichols mentioned to SlashFilm that he was writing the project and described it as a sci-fi picture in the vein of John Carpenter's 1986 film Starman. The phrase "government chase film" was also used, so that sounds like our culprit. Edgerton is a great addition to the cast, and we're always happy to see Shannon reteam with Nichols.

^ If Liev Schreiber and Kevin Pollock cross-pollinated some chick, the kid would grow up to become Shane Black's doppelganger

Lol, spot on. I definitely see the two of them in Shane Black.

New MACHETE KILLS Poster Introduces Carlos Estevez

A new character poster for Robert Rodriguez’s sequel Machete Kills has been unveiled, this time introducing Carlos Estevez as “The President.” Carlos Estevez is, of course, Charlie Sheen’s real name, but it appears that Rodriguez is having some fun with the marketing of the upcoming grindhouse pic. The film’s massive cast also includes Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Lady Gaga, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Mel Gibson. Machete Kills opens on October 4th. Click HERE to see the trailer.

Nicolas Cage to Star in Director Terry Zwigoff's LOST MELODY

Cage-Bandeau.jpg

It’s been too long since we saw a film from director Terry Zwigoff. His movies have a cult following and Bad Santa, his most successful movie, has become a holiday staple. Seven years after his last feature, Art School Confidential, Zwigoff might be returning with Lost Melody. According to The Wrap, Nicolas Cage is set to star as “a man who’s trapped in a marriage to a shrewish wife and falls in love with a prostitute.”

It’s worth noting that a few weeks ago, it was reported that Zwigoff had also signed on to direct Fred Armisen in an untitled comedy about “a man forced to grow up a second time.” As for Cage, he’ll next be seen opposite John Cusack in the thriller The Frozen Ground. Cage is also co-starring with Tye Sheridan (Mud) in David Gordon Green’s drama Joe, and he recently signed on for The Expendables 3.

Kevin Costner to Star in Disney’s Sports Drama MCFARLAND

bhd4ly.jpg

After starring in this summer’s blockbuster, Man of Steel, Kevin Costner will next focus on a more down-to-Earth role. He was reported as being in talks with a new sports drama for Disney about a year ago, but can now be confirmed. He’ll star in McFarland, the high school track team drama directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider). The story centers on the champion track team of the predominantly-Hispanic California town of McFarland which overcomes social and physical challenges during their meets in the 1980s. Hit the jump for more.

Costner, who is currently filming Black and White with Octavia Spencer, is no stranger to sports-related films. Disney has a good track record with Miracle, Invincible and Remember the Titans under their belts. Currently in production is their baseball drama Million Dollar Arm, starring Jon Hamm, Bill Paxton, Alan Arkin, Lake Bell, Suraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal.

First Trailer for AFTERNOON DELIGHT Starring Juno Temple

Afternoon-Delight-Poster-Dragonlord.jpg

Cinedigm has released the trailer for the Jill Soloway‘s dramedy Afternoon Delight. Juno Temple stars as a 19-year-old stripper who finds herself as the unlikely pet project for Kathryn Hahn’s bored, stay-at-home mom character. When Hahn and her distant husband, Josh Radnor, hit up a strip club to spice up their marriage, Hahn takes an interest in Temple and invites her to be the family’s live-in nanny. Jane Lynch also stars as Hahn’s incompetent therapist.

The trailer plays up the more comic aspects of the film to the point where it pulls a review blurb saying “Soloway joins the ranks of Apatow and Tina Fey”, which is completely untrue. If you walk in expecting that kind of movie, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. The film also stars Josh Radnor and Jane Lynch. Afternoon Delight opens August 30th.

THE EQUALIZER Moves Back 5 Months to September 26, 2014

bg7hub.jpg

Sony has decided that it’s better for Denzel Washington to fight bad guys in the fall than the spring. According to Box Office Mojo, Antoine Fuqua‘s adaptation of the 1980s series The Equalizer has moved from April 11, 2014 to September 26, 2014. Washington stars a former covert operations officer who dedicates his life to helping people in trouble. The film also stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Melissa Leo, Marton Csokas, and Haley Bennett.

The move gets The Equalizer away from the family-friendly fare of Rio 2 and Stretch Armstrong. Fuqua’s movie will now face off against Laika’s stop-motion animated The Boxtrolls and Tarsem‘s thriller Selfless starring Ryan Reynolds. The Equalizer probably has a better shot here because both Boxtrolls and Selfless will probably have odd styles that some audiences may find off-putting, and they can run into the safe arms of a Denzel Washington action movie.

Ron Perlman Plugs Kaiju Remedies in PACIFIC RIM Viral Video

Pacific-Rim-Perlman-Kaiju-Remedies-Dragonlord.jpg

Are you in the market for some rather taboo remedies? Pacific Rim star Ron Perlman, in character as Hannibal Chau, wants to sell you some rather illicit Kaiju organs to cure what ails you. Whether you’re suffering from basic ailments like insomnia, restless leg syndrome, or more embarrassing ones like erectile dysfunction, Chau has the cure for what ails you — you know, before we all become extinct. Like Chau says, “Just because the apocalypse is here doesn’t mean you can’t look and feel your best!”

The viral video is the latest bit of marketing released for Warner Bros. and Legendary’s upcoming epic Pacific Rim, in which the military develops elaborate robotic systems known as Jaegers to battle the aliens who have risen from the deep to destroy us. Each Jaeger is piloted by two soldiers, whose brains are connected via a neural bridge so they can communicate wordlessly to fight the monsters in tandem. Everything we’ve seen from Guillermo del Toro‘s latest film looks outstanding, and July 12 simply can’t get here quick enough.
