PLASTIC MAN Live-Action Movie in the Works from Warner Bros. with Scribe Amanda Idoko

E4nGtOJ.jpg

Classic DC Comics hero Plastic Man is getting the big-screen treatment. Up-and-coming screenwriter Amanda Idoko has been hired to pen the script for what will be a comedic action-adventure for Warner Bros. Bob Shaye, the former co-founder of New Line-turned-producer will executive produce.

Plastic Man wasn’t initially a DC character, having been created by Jack Cole for Quality Comics in 1941. When Quality went under in 1956, DC bought many of the characters, Plastic Man among them.

The hero’s true identity is Patrick “Eel” O’Brian, a crook-turned-good guy. O’Brian was part of a gang, and during a botched heist is shot and — wouldn’t you know it — also doused with a chemical liquid. Left for dead by the gang, he awakens to find himself imbued with the power to shape-shift and stretch his body into almost anything thanks to being the most malleable man alive. O’Brian eventually reforms and becomes a police officer.

The character has a certain cult status amongst the comic crowd. He was a member of the Justice League for a time and even had his own cartoon series.

The project is in the early stages and has no filmmaker on board. Details of Idoko’s take were not revealed, but her hiring caps a half-year search by the studio to find the right person the job. Warners is planning on staying true to the light-hearted and even silly tones of the character, say sources.

DC-based film production president Walter Hamada and Chantal Nong are overseeing for the studio.

Idoko was a staff writer on The Mayor, the short-lived ABC comedy about a hip-hop artist who wins a city election, and now her first feature script is moving into production: Breaking News in Yuba County, to star Allison Janney and Laura Dern and directed by Tate Taylor is scheduled to go before cameras in 2019.

Mutant superhero Toxie is going mainstream. Legendary has acquired film rights to Toxic Avenger, the cult classic from indie schlock producing house Troma Entertainment, with the goal of relaunching the property as a full-throated franchise.

Troma founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, who directed the 1984 movie, will produce the new film project.

The original pic told the story of a mild-mannered young man named Melvin who becomes a disfigured radioactive hulking mess after falling into a vat of toxic waste. He uses his newfound form to brutally fight bad guys. The movie went on to become Troma's biggest success, launching several sequels and even a children's cartoon. The character is also Troma's mascot.

Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter will oversee for Legendary. No writer or filmmaker is currently attached.

DOCTOR STRANGE Sequel a Go with Director Scott Derrickson Returning

rDnFSnV.jpg

Marvel is finally ready to conjure up a sequel to Doctor Strange. Scott Derrickson, who directed and co-wrote the mystical Marvel hero's initial 2016 outing, has quietly finalized a deal to helm the new installment. A search for a writer to pen the script is about to get underway.

Benedict Cumberbatch will return as Stephen Strange, the good doctor turned master of the mystic arts, as will Benedict Wong, who played his right-hand man, Wong. Rachel McAdams, who played Stephen Strange’s love interest, is likely to return as well.

Strange was last seen de-materializing in the $2 billion-grossing Avenger: Infinity War, where one of his lines of dialogue served as the inspiration for the title of the fourth Avengers movie, Avengers: Endgame.

Marvel has been tight-lipped about its plans for life after Endgame, which it is calling Phase Four. After all, how much can there be when half your heroes are supposed to be dead?

In any case, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the plan is for the script to be hashed out in 2019 with an eye toward a spring 2020 production start. If all goes well, the movie would be casting its spell on audiences in May 2021.

Derrickson carved out a résumé of horror movies such as 2005's The Exorcism of Emily Rose and 2012'sSinister before making 2016’s Doctor Strange, which grossed $677.7 million worldwide. Earlier this year, he directed the pilot for TNT’s adaptation of Snowpiercer, but parted ways with the production after the showrunner was replaced.

Color me intrigued

I know it's not a movie but it was done to go along with the release of the new Transformer movie Bumblebee. Pretty great having a movie studio pay for you to build your own transformer like robot.

Benicio Del Toro to Play the Villain Swiper in Paramount's DORA THE EXPLORER Live-Action Movie

Dora the Explorer has found her villain. Benicio del Toro has closed a deal to voice Swiper, the thieving fox, in Paramount Players’ live-action feature based on the character from the popular Nickelodeon TV series.

The signing is a late-in-the-game development, as the movie wrapped production in Australia two weeks ago, but not an atypical one, as voice casts for CG characters also tend to be locked in when post-production begins.

Isabela Moner, seen in Paramount’s dramedy Instant Family, is starring as the titular Dora, a girl accustomed to the jungle life with her parents and now forced to explore the uncharted terrain of high school.

The cast includes Michael Pena and Eva Longoria as her parents, as well as Eugenio Derbez, Adriana Barraza and Temuera Morrison, among others.

The film’s story sees a high school-bound Dora finding herself leading Boots (a monkey and her best friend), Diego and a rag-tag group of teens on a Goonies-esque adventure to save her parents and solve the mystery behind a lost Inca civilization.

In the popular Dora TV series, Swiper appeared in nearly every episode to steal Dora's hard-won artifacts. The pint-sized adventurer then uttered one of the show's signature catchphrases, uttered three times, "Swiper, no swiping."

James Bobin is directing the movie that has an Aug. 2, 2019 release.

Del Toro has been on a quite a roll this year, reprising his role as a principled assassin in Sicario: Day of the Soldado as well as The Collector for Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. He is also starring with Patricia Arquette and Paul Dano in Showtime’s acclaimed limited crime series, Escape at Dannemora.
