Growing up in the 90s and witnessed gang violence first-hand, I'd never imagine there would be a day when our mainstream media and civil servants on Capitol Hill would collectively stand in solidarity with a gang as brutal and blood-thirsty as the MS-13.

This week, California law-enforcement officials met with President Trump to discuss their difficulty in working with federal government to prosecute and deport criminals, thanks to "Sanctuary" laws:

The Fresno sheriff looked across the table toward President Donald Trump and asked him for direction and clarity.

Sheriff Margaret Mims told the president that California’s sanctuary laws have put sheriffs like herself in “an untenable position," caught between conflicting state and federal laws.

“It’s a disgrace,” Mims said about her department's inability to work with federal agents..

Mims joined a group of more than 15 local law enforcement officials, lawmakers and administration officials from California, including Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson and El Dorado Sheriff John D’Agostini for a roundtable discussion with Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and ICE Director Thomas Homan on their opposition to California's sanctuary state policies.

Christianson was the last law enforcement officer to speak. He echoed the sentiments of many of the other public officials, thanking Trump for his work. He said the state’s sanctuary laws are interfering with his deputies' ability to work with federal agents to keep his community safe. He said he was privileged to live in the Central Valley where agriculture was a multi-billion dollar industry and promised that ICE was not sweeping through the fields grabbing hard working immigrants.

“We’re looking for the people who are criminals," Christianson said. "Not the people who are seeking a better life in America."

Responding to Mims's concerns, Trump emphasized the dangers of immigrant gang members.

“You wouldn’t believe how bad these people are," Trump said. “These aren’t people. These are animals, and we’re taking them out of the country at a rate that’s never happened before."

And he assured the sheriff the administration would continue working.

“We’ll take care of it, Margaret,” Trump said.

Several news organizations took remarks President Donald Trump made Wednesday out of context to suggest he was referring to undocumented immigrants at large as "animals," when in context the President was referring to members of a violent gang.

The comment in question happened at a White House roundtable discussion on the subject of immigration and so-called "sanctuary cities." Complaining at the roundtable about confusion between different levels of law enforcement, Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims brought up the violent gang Mara Salvatrucha, better known as MS-13.

"There could be an MS-13 member I know about -- if they don't have a certain threshold, I cannot tell [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] about it," Mims said.

Speaking immediately after Mims, Trump said, "We have people coming into the country, or trying to come in -- and we're stopping a lot of them -- but we're taking people out of the country. You wouldn't believe how bad these people are. These aren't people. These are animals. And we're taking them out of the country at a level and at a rate that's never happened before."

But several major media outlets stripped the context from Trump's comments, publishing stories and posting tweets that strongly suggested he had said undocumented immigrants at large "aren't people," but "animals." In some cases, outlets that placed the comments in context in stories removed the context in tweets.

"Trump referred to those crossing US border illegally as 'animals' and slammed California sanctuary state laws as 'deadly,'" a now-deleted tweet from the Associated Press read.

The New York Times tweeted, "Trump lashed out at undocumented immigrants during a White House meeting, calling those trying to breach the country's borders 'animals.'"

In its story, headlined "Trump Calls Some Unauthorized Immigrants 'Animals' in Rant," The Times said that Trump had "lashed out at undocumented immigrants" and warned "in front of news cameras that dangerous people are clamoring to breach the country's borders and branding such people 'animals.'" It wasn't until the third and fourth paragraph of the story that The Times added context to Trump's remarks.

A headline on the homepage of The Washington Post on Thursday morning read, "Trump refers to some undocumented immigrants as 'animals.'" The story's lede said Trump had "referred to some undocumented immigrants as 'animals.'" It wasn't until the newspaper's sixth paragraph that Trump's comments were put in the full context.

And ABC News, in part, tweeted, "Pres. Trump refers to some who cross the border illegally as 'animals,' not people."

Other outlets did not directly accuse the President of calling immigrants "animals," but failed to include in tweets the entire context for Trump's remark. Those outlets included CNN, CBS News, and NBC News.

Spokespeople for The New York Times, ABC News, NBC News, and CBS News did not respond to requests for comment.

A spokesperson for the Associated Press noted the outlet had deleted its tweet. A follow up tweet explained the outlet had done so "because it wasn't made clear that he was speaking after a comment about gang members."



A spokesperson for CNN said that the network had clarified its tweet in a follow up tweet and that the comment's full context was properly presented in the linked story.



But a spokesperson for The Washington Post stood by the newspaper's reporting. In an email, the spokesperson said, "Both the headline and the story are accurate."

I watched Cuomo's show on CNN earlier. Cuomo skipped Sheriff Mims's statement and only played the video of Trump's response.

"If the media and liberals want to defend MS-13, they're more than welcome to," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters. "Frankly, I don't think the term the president used is strong enough."

The spokesperson rattled off a list of "heinous acts" committed by the gang, including rape, beating a woman with a baseball bat and killing and decapitating a man.

"The term ‘animal’ doesn’t go far enough," she said.

Asked about the phrase by reporters, Trump defended his choice of words and vowed to repeat them.

"MS-13 — these are animals... We need strong immigration laws. ...We have laws that are laughed at on immigration,” he said. “So when the MS-13 comes in, when the other gang members come into our country, I refer to them as animals and guess what, I always will."

Trump has previously used the term “animals” to refer to members of MS-13.

“When all of our great-great-grandparents came to America they weren’t ‘animals,’ and these people aren’t either," Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) tweeted Wednesday.

Sanders responded that "the president should continue to use his platform and everything he can do under the law to stop these types of horrible, horrible, disgusting people.”

Democrats sure do seem to have a lot of strange “protected classes” lately. Obviously, they’ve always liked to put people into groups, fan the flames of a victim mentality, and then play those groups against each other. It’s just what they do. But, in the last couple of weeks, they’ve decided to defend Iran, Hamas, and now – the icing on the cake – MS-13.

If you’re unfamiliar with MS-13, and I pray to God you are, they’re a violent gang made up mostly of Salvadorans whose motto is “Murder, Rape, and Control.” They are, unarguably, one of the most violent gangs on the face of the earth, and the horror stories shared by their victims’ families are heartbreaking beyond words.

Yesterday, in a grotesque insult to animals, President Trump referred to MS-13 members as animals.

The media doesn’t want you to know that. They’re desperate to generate ‘gotcha moments’ so they’re showing edited versions of Trump’s comments to make it appear that he called all Mexican and South American immigrants – legal and illegal – “animals.” That’s simply not the case, as you can see below:



However, word was out. Trump had revealed his mythical racism once again. It was time to release the hounds. Immediately, Democrats started to defend the target of Trump’s comments. …That’s right, this week they’ve decided to defend MS-13 – a gang of rapists and murderers who like to brutalize, torture, and behead their victims.

So people believe that humans evolved from something else, yet humans are not animals? I mean at least they didn't say savages or barbaric.
 
With the added context, this might not be eloquent but it’s not a statement that all immigrants are animals.

Trump puts his foot in his mouth a lot - it doesn’t do anyone any favors to make a mountain out of a mole hill like this. If we all were to assume for a second that Trump was guilty of crimes that we would all think would warrant his removal from office - all this type of misleading will do is push people to his side. I’m not saying he is guilty of anything here, but I think everyone has a line. This type of reporting just pushes those lines farther from where they should be.
 
I'm sure MS-13 members are absolutely devastated to hear that president trump isn't a fan of their work.

“Street gang MS-13, infamous for vicious machete killings, is first to be declared an international criminal group.” That’s a headline from the Daily Mail in 2012.

“The gratuitous acts of violence these now-convicted gang members committed were intended to spread fear.” That’s a description from actingU.S. Attorney John Horn about a 2015 murder conviction in Georgia.

“Video of the mutilated bodies was sent to a girlfriend of one of the victims.” “She was walking home one evening with Nisa, a basketball teammate one day shy of her 16th birthday, when MS-13 members spotted them and attacked with a machete and baseball bats.” “A large butcher knife, a bloodstained baseball hat and three 9mm handguns were also found in the car.”

Those are all different incidents. All MS-13.

On Wednesday, President Trump was speaking as part of his roundtable discussion on California’s sanctuary laws and was asked about MS-13. His response set off a firestorm.

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims brought up the gang and her department’s ability to combat them: “There could be an MS-13 member that I know about” and yet can’t report to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Trump replied, saying in part, “These aren't people. These are animals."

The controversy blew up when people and news organizations used the quote or clip without the context of Mims’ question. Trump wasn’t calling all illegal immigrants animals. One widely favored and retweeted response referred to Trump’s remark as the “language of ethnic cleansing.”

Quickly, though, people on the right (and some journalists) corrected the record. That it was about MS-13 was reported more widely. Even so, many on the left, including notably House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, simply recalibrated to defend the humanity of the gang itself.

“Does he not believe in the spark of divinity, the dignity and worth of every person?” Pelosi asked.

Likewise, CNBC’s John Harwood said, “However repugnant their actions, MS-13 gang members are human beings IMHO.”

Madness.

The question is whether it was fair or wise of Trump to call MS-13 animals, and whether it’s a morally objectionable statement overall.

The American Heritage Dictionary third definition of “animal” is “a person who behaves in a bestial or brutish manner.” By that definition, “animal” isn’t nearly strong enough.

Today's news spat over MS-13 is part of a longer-running drama. Since Trump took office, there has been an effort to downplay the gang’s significance even as Trump has rhetorically raised its profile.

He's not the only president to do so. In 2012 — you know, under President Obama — MS-13 was formally designated a transnational criminal organization by the Treasury Department. At the time, this was characterized approvingly as a “crackdown” by the Obama administration.

MS-13 (or Mara Salvatrucha), a primarily El Salvador-based gang that started in Los Angeles, was believed to have about 10,000 members across the country at that time and Central America. They were known for hacking enemies to death, executing people in broad daylight in view of witnesses, and fatally beating people with bats.

That brutality has continued:

►In 2013, two gang members beat and hacked a 16-year-old Houston teen to death using bats and machetes. They also almostdecapitated him, the Houston Chronicle reported. The gang suspected he had shared information with El Salvadoran police. Both killers were sentenced 35 years in prison. Both were from El Salvador, here illegally. One had been picked up previously on an immigration charge, a common thread for the gang. That’s why it comes up in the context of sanctuary city roundtables.

►In 2017, as many as10 MS-13 members stabbed a man more than 100 times in Maryland. They decapitated him and cut out his heart. The first suspect charged, who allegedly stabbed first, wasMiguel Angel Lopez-Abrego, of El Salvador, who was here illegally.

►Also last year, MS-13 members shot an unidentified girl who was thought to be 15 in the head and chest, leaving her body in the middle of a busy street in Houston’s Chinatown. The murderer said he killed her to appease Satan. “The beast did not want a material offering, but wanted a soul,” he said. He was from El Salvador originally, and here illegally.

Way back in 2003, Brenda Paz was famously murdered by MS-13 after cooperating with police as an informant. CBS News’ Dan Rather reported on the slaying.

Rather reported that MS-13 conducted "investigations” and held meetings where they went over things like recruitment, drug sales and murder. A “greenlight” was unanimously agreed upon to assassinate Paz at such a meeting. Paz was lured to a fishing trip with her boyfriend, who along with his fellow gang member stabbed her to death in front of a witness.

The list goes on:

►In 2017, four gang members were arrested for a spree of 10 murders in Las Vegas.

►In 2014, MS-13 “enforcers” were deployed by a cartel to kidnap and torture teenagers in St. Paul.

►In 2012, Dennis Gil-Bernardez, a Honduran native and a leader in the gang, was sentenced to 80 years for, among many other crimes, stabbing a man to death on a street in Washington, D.C.

►Four men were hacked to death on Long Island, N.Y.

►A 15-year-old girl was tortured, had a tattoo cut off, and then was stabbed to death.

The documentation of the gang’s brutality is long and horrifying. Murder, torture, rape, dismemberment, mutilation. These are heinous acts, and we’re meant to know it. They are committed for that reason, to shock and terrorize, silence and warn. MS-13 means for you to be repelled and horrified.

Calling the people who commit these acts "animals" doesn't dehumanize them. Their actions dehumanize them.

Whatever you think about the president, it’s not responsible or reasonable to object when the president tells the truth about a brutal street gang.

Sad fuckin' day when a President's G-rated characterization of a notoriously brutal gang stirs controversy. I'm struggling to come up with something nicer. Somehow "gentlemen" doesn't really capture the spirit. Capitalists, perhaps?
 
If Trump was talking about MS-13, sure they're animals and worse, etc.

But since Trump has fairly advanced Akzheimers it's hard to tell what he's talking about at any given moment, he veers off course constantly.

For all I know he was talking about protestors at his rallies. In fact given that the prior speaker was talking about MS-13 it's a safe bet Trump was not. Dude has the attention span of a gnat.

Edit: puts me in mind of when Trudeau got sand in his vag when someone called FGM barbaric. Some progressives are progressing away from any semblance of rationality.
 
Yeah, honestly only an absolute idiot or someone completely blinded by frothing, fanatical partisanism would honestly have thought that Trump made that statement about immigrants in general.

Same as when they were all hollering about "They're not sending they're best" and the rapist and murder comments that accompanied it. Was sheer idiocy on the part of his critics, and it helped to justify the deep distrust that American conservatives have developed for the media.
