President Trump Travels To Long Island to Discuss MS-13 Gang

President Donald Trump on Wednesday returned to Long Island, where he addressed immigration and efforts to eliminate the notorious MS-13 gang.

MS-13 is believed to be responsible for at least 25 murders on Long Island in the last two years.

The president took part in a roundtable discussion Wednesday afternoon with federal and local law enforcement, elected officials and families of some of the violent gang’s victims.

Trump began his remarks calling MS-13 “a menace.”

“It’s a ruthless gang that has violated our borders and transformed once peaceful neighborhoods into blood-stained killing fields,” he said.

In his push for better border security, the president was joined by local law enforcement officers who are on the front lines of fighting the notorious street gang. Some have even received death threats after dozens of arrests in island-wide crackdowns.

It was the second time that the president has traveled to the area to talk about MS-13.



Last July, he met with law enforcement officials and spoke about the beatings and machete attacks allegedly by the gang that killed Long Island teens Kayla Cuevas and Nisa Mickens. The girls’ families attended the State of the Union address in January, as well as Wednesday’s roundtable.

Mickens’ father, Robert, said “it’s an ongoing struggle” and later added “we cannot have children kill children anymore.”

“It’s very sad that all these loopholes these past couple of years – decades – that have been allowing these criminals to come into our country, into our towns, into our states and do whatever they want,” he said.

“The American Dream is still there,” he continued. “But if you’re going to come here with acts of violence, you can stay in your own country with that because we don’t need it here anymore.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions also visited Long Island last year to address the issue.

Since then, MS-13 members have reportedly turned their attention to law enforcement. Last month, police in Nassau County say they have received multiple gang-related death threats against its officers.

“We need more resources, we need more training, we need more uniformed personnel and we need it now,” said Nassau County PBA President James McDermott. “You’ve got families of police officers worrying about their loved one going to work and not coming home, because somebody’s targeting them.”

Security was tight Wednesday as demonstrators set up outside — both in support of the president and others protesting his visit, Burrell reported.

Protesters said he is using the MS-13 problem to punish other immigrants.

“He just wants to smear us all with the same brush, and it’s just not like that,” Siomara Umana, of East Meadow, told Burrell. “We are here as honest working people.”

Supporters, however, agreed with his approach so far.

“He’s doing a great job, he’s been doing a great job,” Mark Kaiser, of North Babylon, said. “He’s handling it very appropriately and he’s doing the right thing.”

Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll: 56% says calling MS-13 members 'animals' is fair

A majority of Americans in a new poll believe it’s fair to characterize members of the MS-13 gang as “animals.”

Fifty-six percent of American adults in the Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll said referring to members of the gang as “animals” is fair, compared to 44 percent who said the characterization was unfair.

A slimmer majority, 52 percent, added that comments that “dehumanize” members of MS-13 are acceptable.

The question stems from Trump’s comments last week during an immigration roundtable. A California sheriff criticized "sanctuary cities" and said there could be an “MS-13 member I know about” that she can’t take action against because state officials are ordered to ignore federal immigration laws.

In response, Trump said, “We are taking people out of the country, you wouldn’t believe how bad these people are. These aren’t people. These are animals, and we’re taking them out of the country at a rate that’s never happened before.”

Critics accused Trump of painting a broader brush of immigrants in America illegally as “animals,” while Trump and his allies claimed he was only referring to MS-13 members.

The Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll online survey of 1,347 registered voters was conducted May 21-22. The partisan breakdown is 37 percent Democrat, 32 percent Republican, 29 percent independent and 2 percent other.

The Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll is a collaboration of the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University and The Harris Poll. The Hill will be working with Harvard/Harris Poll throughout 2018.

‘Dangerous’ MS-13 Gang Member Accused of Violent Texas Murder Caught in South Carolina

A member of the violent street gang MS-13 who is accused of brutally murdering a man in Texas has been found in a small town in South Carolina.

Franklin Platero-Rodriguez, 21, was arrested Tuesday while exiting a Subway restaurant in Ladson, South Carolina. According to the Berkeley Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), Platero-Rodriguez was detained by members of the U.S. Marshals–led Operation Intercept (OPIN) Fugitive Task Force and BCSO’s K9 unit.

Authorities found a loaded 9 mm pistol in Platero-Rodriguez’s front pocket, the sheriff’s office said. The pistol had been stolen in Texas, where the 21-year-old was wanted in connection with a murder.

Platero-Rodriguez is accused of shooting the man, placing his body inside the trunk of a car and lighting the car on fire. He then fled to South Carolina. The Ford F-150 where Platero-Rodriguez was found matched the description of the car used in the murder, officials said.

According to Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Platero-Rodriguez was charged with unlawful carrying of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and fugitive in possession of a firearm. A hold was placed on him for the Walker County Sheriff’s Office in Texas and Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“We work closely with our federal partners and arrests like this are a result of it. Platero-Rodriguez is a dangerous MS-13 Gang member, and I am glad that we were able to locate and arrest him without him being able to cause further harm,” Sheriff Duane Lewis said in a statement.

During a press conference, Lewis said Platero-Rodriguez had been deported at least once before re-entering the country illegally. ICE, which has placed a detainer on the suspect, had been searching for Platero-Rodriguez on a 2014 charge for failing to appear for a court hearing, The Post and Courier reported.

Detectives are also investigating whether Platero-Rodriguez was involved in a home invasion Tuesday on the same street where he had been living. The gunman in the home invasion reportedly injured a resident and stole valuables, according to the Post and Courier.

Lewis said he was unsure as to why or how Platero-Rodriguez ended up in the small South Carolina town. “I don’t see an indication that the MS-13 gang is here in Berkeley County,” the sheriff said. “I want the folks in Berkeley County to rest assured.”

“The safety and peace of our communities and our citizens is paramount,” Thomas Griffin, the U.S. marshal for the District of South Carolina, said in a statement, according to WYFF. “The collaboration between the Marshals Service and all of our law enforcement partners will continue to protect society against the violence of gangs like MS-13.”

The Trump administration has taken a tough stance on the violent international gang, which originated in Los Angeles during the 1980s. Earlier this week, the White House said the administration “is working tirelessly to bring these violent animals to justice.”
