Muay Thai vs Taekwondo in full contact TKD competition (Awesome KO) - VIDEO

Well, to be fair so does Saenchai. Jumping downwards elbow, jumping low kick, twist kicks and his more or less patented cartwheel kick.. Yet he was awarded for putting on the most beautiful display of Muay Thai for the king's daughter or something like that. Just because less people use those techniques now doesn't mean they aren't still part of the art. If more people were at the level Saenchai is at I'd say the world of Thaiboxing would be a whole lot more exciting.

You're not wrong and I'm probably not right--- Muay Thai is an evolving art and it's hard to classify what is the norm and what is an exception. It was just odd that theblackknight took exception to how Muay Thai was being portrayed but posted a video of a guy who often fights with a flair not often seen in Muay Thai matches.

Also, Saenchai is my favorite MT fighter and the only person I will tune into watch live when the links are posted here. That teep-into-sidekick technique is amazing.

It's amazing how certain specialised techniques are used by fighters across the board, regardless of style - that's something that Kenji Midori was doing in the 80's & 90's - Mae geri/yoko geri (keage/kekomi) hybrid - I'm sure there are probably some more of other styles:

The "muay thai representative" in the OP video did not look like a muay thai practitioner. And also they were fighting under TKD rules, so...yeah, ok.

Well, could it be that is how a Muay Thai practitioner would look fighting under TKD rules?

It certainly does, but when you're talking about what Muay Thai the sport is (like your post indicated), showing a guy who brings in a lot of boxing and older Muay Boran moves that are rarely if ever used in the sport, you aren't representing Muay Thai as well as you could

Thai style Muay Thai? niether does that guy in the video getting KOed recklessly chasing the TKD guy trying to throw what looks like a side kick...? lol plus the reason thai boxers don't use the kick that knocked him out is because they consider it a waste of time, but it is still considered to be a Muay Thai technique, but it is unusual to see your right about that.

Taking away punches to the head, knees, elbows, lowkicks and a basic guard (seriously, is it illegal to guard the head in TKD or something?) and fight against an opponent who trains only for that scenario is like putting Usain Bolt in a wheelchair to see him lose in the special olympics.

Perhaps, if the guy was half-decent at muay thai. But the guy in this video simply isn't any good at it. I'm not even sure his style is muay thai.

I don't even know how to respond to this mess... It's a Muay Thai technique (of course) but not a good one so they don't use it (of course).
I'm not saying the Thai fighter in the video looked good, although you have no true way of knowing how good he is at Muay Thai when he is fighting in a TKD tournament.

Well you kind of do have a way of knowing - you can watch him and see that he's terrible at it.

Agree to disagree. I don't think he's winning a stadium title at any point in his life, but I can't call him terrible until I see him fight in the rules he actually trains to fight in.

Agree to disagree. I've been training long enough to know terrible when I see it.

i think the dude lost form and confidence after getting hammered with some of those kicks though.

being a tkd practitioner he should be intimately familiar with being "hammered with kicks", especially considering how weak his technique is...

aren't kicks to the legs not allowed?

I must admit I am doing MT now with a long TKD background. I love the shin blocks, the clinching, the power of MT. But what I lack in punches I still have in my kicks when we spar. MT sparing I find myself at home still sparing against a MT guy because reverse side kicks are still sneaky and still work just fine. It's not something that a lot of the MT guys I'm sparing against expect and usually land it right in their kidney (with control of course) expect.

If you've trained at all then you can tell the Muay Thai guy had no idea what he was doing.
