This is the 6th year that I've kept a training log on Sherdog. I started off with basically no lifting experience & worked up to competing in Scottish Highland Games, Jiujitsu Tournaments & a couple of Powerlifting meets.

For 2016 my primary focus is Jiujitsu, if I can remain consistent, I've got a good shot at getting my brown belt this year.

Height: 6-2
Weight: 215
BJJ Purple Belt
Age: 44 in March 2016

Biked to the beach & played volleyball for 3 hours. I think my volleyball is improving as a direct result of my conditioning improving over the last couple of months.

BJJ - 1 Hour gi

Drilled a knee slice pass for an extended warmup, then 2 minutes of fast-paced guard passing. My partner was Babalu - love working with that guy. Spent the remainder of the hour sparring 5 minute rounds with a 1 minute break. Did some things well today, fought harder to stay out of crappy positions, fought harder not to give up sweeps and did a better job maintaining underhooks from the bottom & recovering guard.

In other news, my house got "TREEPEED" - some kids (friends of my daughter) dumped about 20 Christmas trees in my front yard as a prank.

2 Hours of Jiujitsu last night. 1 Hour class, working on a basic standing guard pass, then 1 hour of HARD sparring, starting from standing. I was beat by the end. Came home, ate some home made beef stew & then watched an episode & a half of breaking bad.

1 Hour Jiujitsu

Friday sparring. After warmups did 6x6 minute rounds. Picked up a basic tip thats going to help my half-guard.

In for another good year of training and cool pics!

Thanks MilkMan!!

Biked to the beach today & played 3.5 hours of doubles volleyball on the beach. Bike ride home was tough, that's a lot of volleyball. There were only 4 of us, so no breaks. Seriously excellent workout.

1 Hour jiujitsu

Mondays are always rough for me I think. Legs were still fried from all the volleyball on Saturday. We did 6x6 minute rounds today. Worked with a HUGE white belt (6-4, 300ish) who just tried to smash the shit out of me. That guy is going to be a big problem if he keeps coming to training lol.

Jui-jitsu - 1 Hour Gi, 1 Hour nogi

Lots of rolling today. I'm tired...

1 Hour Jiujitsu

6 x 6 minute rounds. Shoulder is flaring up, so had to be careful with it today, but feels better after the class.

Time for bike upgrade. Youve earned it

Biked to the beach for about 3 hours of volleyball, then biked back. Made some good time on the way to the beach, we've moved to a better volleyball court so it's a little farther. Here are the stats for the trip to the beach:

4.84 miles in 19:07, average speed 15.2 mph, max speed 22.9 mph.

The ride back was a little slower since I was tired:

4.83 miles in 22:18, average speed 13.0 mph, max speed 24.5 mph

Bike upgrade would be nice, Midmo, but my current bike is still doing good & I have other things to spend money on...I am considering adding some Aero bars so improve my aerodynamics on it. I think that could make a solid improvement for just a little cash.

Work is really picking up to start off the year. So that's good for me at work, but bad for working out. Gong to continue to try squeezing in jiujitsu when I can, would be great to get the home gym going again too - too bad I sold all my gear a year or 2 ago.

BJJ - 2 Hours

Left shoulder has been getting steadily worse since I woke up this morning, but I went to jiujitsu anyway - bascially rolled one-armed. Not sure what's up with it, maybe I've been sitting at my desk weird. Maybe I'm just old. At any rate, glad I made it to class & sparring. We worked the basic cross-collar, thumb-in smash pass, then some closed guard specific training, then sparring.

BJJ - 1 Hour

1 Hour of jiujitsu today, comp class. Shoulder held up better today, didn't hurt as much as last night. Still no idea whats up with it. We did specific training first where the guy already on the mat gets to choose the position to start. Followed that up with several 5 minute rounds of sparring.

BJJ - 1 Hour

One of our new black belts ran class today. He showed some basic stuff with spider guard, but really focused on some details like hand positioning, etc. I didn't feel great today, so I'm glad the class was mostly drilling.

The shoulder could be a simple as an inflamed bursa. Some anti inflammatories should help.

You should consider rolling while actually tucking the arm or just holding your own gi. After my last surgery i trained that way for awhile and really noticed some other things i was doing wrong and it made me focus on weight transfer and control. Think of it like sparring and not letting yourself use your favorite techniques.

Yep, that's basically how I rolled on Tuesday & Wednesday. I didn't fully tuck the arm, but didn't really use it, didn't post on it, etc... definitely made me open my game up some (which I'm trying to do anyway) so it was good.

I miss lifting. I just haven't been able to do a good job in the past of balancing lifting, jiujitsu & family. I really want to improve my jiujitsu, so I think the amount of BJJ I'm training lately is exactly what I need to do. But I also feel like I need to lift some stuff. Have to figure out how to sneak in some gym time without pissing off the Mrs....The best solution is to try to rebuild the home gym, but I think it will be awhile before I can get that going again....

Decided to go to the gym. Worked out fast, no breaks. Supersetted the biceps sets with the shoulder iso stuff. Worked well, I'm gonna be sore....been months since I lifted. This workout only took me 35 minutes, which is really cool - should be easy to squeeze some of these in...

Got a phone call from work & had to cut it short at this point, so I missed out on pullups & abs. Biked to & from the gym though so got some conditioning in. Been a busy day at work, couldn't make it to any of the jiujitsu classes & will be on a call with Hawaii during the evening class tonight...
