Name one movie that is better than The Shawshank Redemption

You're switching TV channels and torn between watching The Shawshank Redemption and another movie on a different channel. What is that one movie that would make you refuse to watch The Shawshank Redemption, and choose that one movie instead?
Shawshank is up there for me, definitely top 5 I would say. Maybe top 3. I would probably only switch out to Casino or Leon. Depending on what mood I was in or what movie I had seen more recently. Depending on the circumstances, I might just leave Shawshank on. In fact, that's probably what I would do since I prefer to watch movies from start to finish.

Shawshank isn't even on my favorite Top100 movies of all time.

Its good, don't get me wrong, but it completely falls apart after its pointed out it would be impossible for Andy to have made a hole in that pipe with a large piece of concrete during his escape.

Even more impossible for him to make a hole he could have crawled through.
Is it that it's not a science fiction type movie which breaks the immersion for you? On a somewhat related note, going back and watching Prison Break again after the actor who played Michael came out of the closet kind of made aspects of the show a bit farcical. I really credit that actor for going out of his way to pretend he was straight when the show was still on the air.

No.

Its historical fiction.

Gay actors can play straight characters.

Just like every Tom Cruise role, ever.

Well, I was trying to get to the heart of why finding out that fact ruined the movie for you.

If Cruise is actually gay or has homosexual tendencies, then I thank him too for trying to keep that under wraps.

I wasn't just referring to the actor from Prison Break acting straight on the show, but more that he went to great lengths to conceal his homosexuality, and outright denied it to the media. It allowed me to enjoy the show when it aired, and then rewatch it later without having to think about it. He also came out in a really meaningful way later on. The show is a bit farcical now at times, but whatever. He's a good guy and a good actor, very intelligent too.

I think Shawshank Redemption is one of the best movies in its genre. I don't think there are many in it's league. Bronx Tale ,Boy's Life, and Imaginary Crimes are pretty up there in my opinion. Boy's Life, Stand by Me, Big Fsh, and Imaginary Crimes being darker than the others so they aren't fun to watch on a idle saturday. There isn't much to fault Shawshank. If you don't like it you are probably not a fan of redemption movies, period. It isn't my favorite but I can recognize it is a very well told story. If you want to see a Stephen King story of the same genre turned into heavy handed slop, watch the Green Mile.

I never understood all the love for Shawshank Redemption. Yes it's a good movie but not the GOAT as some treat it.
May not be goat but it brings a high level of rewatchability due to its length, subplots and uplifting and easygoing vibe.
