even though I want the Sharks to win the series against the Knights, it's nice to see Fleury rebound with another team after getting kicked to the curb when Murray came back at Pitt.

Well, I did say I would expect a stronger positive correlation there. That doesn't mean there isn't still a positive one between total shots faced and total wins.

Because there is an invisible x there that represents games played, which gives more credence to your point. But, out of the five guys who played 65 + games (including 2 who played more) Andersen had +218, + 136, +175 and 163 -- and his ratio of GA's from there wasn't that bad comparatively.

I just think you're cherry picking individual stats here without a general framework for using them comparatively. What is the value of +218 shots compared to +175? How does it relate to wins? Why are these being presented together in the same paragraph?

For these stats to meaningfully support your claims about Andersen, you'd need to show that in general, total shots faced is a predictor of low total wins. But I think it's probably a predictor of higher total wins.

Now, on the other hand, I would expect something like Total Shots Faced > Total Shots Faced by Opposing Goalies to be generally correlated to a lower Winning Percentage of the first goalie. But that still doesn't mean Total Shots Faced isn't correlated to Total Wins.

Because in order for your correlation to work, you need to add three variables - wins - shots - games -- and when comparing that to the averages of the 4/5 other goalies who have similiar, win, games -- you will see a much great discrepancy in the total amount of shots Andersen faced.

You're right, that it usually is a predictor of more wins -- simply because it comes with more games (more games, more shots, more wins) but the fact that the freddie faced an average of 173 more shots than the 4 other guys who played as many games with comparative wins -- shows the value of the correlation beyond the 3rd variable.

also, as mentioned, freddie faced more shots than the leafs acquired on a per game basis

polak was +3 -- phaneu...errr... i mean gardiner was -5. MINUS PHIVE!!!!

One game is one game. Gardiner sucked tonight

Overreacting over a playoff exit and making rash decisions is something stupid teams do. Like the Oilers

The players who sucked the majority of the 89 games are the ones who need to leave not the guy who sucked for the last one

i agree that polak has to go -- but he is much, much, much better in is 6th man role than jake is in his top 4. Gardiner had a terrible playoffs from game 1 to now -- he just saved his best crappiness for game 7

Just blatantly untrue tbh but I'm too tired after that shit show to bother arguing

Especially since I'm pissed at Jake and don't really feel like defending his dumb ass right now

Jake is an offensive generator, which is fine -- but leafs have that in spades in other forms. He is a - 66 giveway machine for the year and horrible own end metrics. Jake is completely expendable -- but i would love to hear any argument for the counter

Gardiner + Kapanen for Weber mainboard threads incoming. It's fair because Gardiner is elite in something or other / 60 rel.

I was actually hoping Kapanen would flourish in Toronto after he got traded. He's had some big moments, but nothing consistent.

He has all kinds of skill but he's not particularly bright. I'm actually surprised that Johnsson hasn't really made his mark yet. He was fantastic in Frölunda.

Well first of all the Leafs defensive depth is so embarrassingly poor that I wouldn't term anyone who can tie their own skates completely expendable. Good defensemen don't grow on trees, they aren't just there to be purchased when you decide you want a new one. They cost a lot, in free agent dollars or in trade pieces especially since teams have ruined the market with Hall/Larsson and other stupid lopsided trades attempting to fix defensive issues. And now that Dermott is already in the lineup there aren't any left handed defensemen pushing for a spot on the team. Unless you're so disillusioned with one game 7 performance that you think Borgman or Rosen are better than Gardiner.

He factually doesn't have horrible own end metrics. Like he just doesn't. He has the best corsi of any regular leaf defence man not named Morgan Rielly and the best xGF% of any Leaf defence man. Giveaways is a poor and misleading stat because it doesn't provide context. Gardiner is relied upon to move the puck out of the zone more than any other Leaf defence man and lead the team in both accurate D-zone exit passes and touches on the puck. If you constantly have the puck, and are relied upon to move the puck, you will give the puck away more than other players. This is a few years old but I'd recommend looking it over, it explains effectively why using stats like giveaways is pretty useless https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/giveaways-vs-turnovers-find-value-unreliable-stat/. He leads the team in effective first passes. Leads the team in controlled zone exits.

If you want old school stats instead he's got those too. Only 19 defencemen scored 50 points this season in the NHL. One was Jake Gardiner. He tied for the team lead in points by defensemen, led the team in even strength points by a defensemen, assists by a defensemen and was (stupid ass stat incoming) +9 on the year. He has also upped his production every single year since 2014 and is on an incredible contract.

If he's being traded for an elite right handed defensemen who combines more effective defensive hockey than Gardiner with the same level of puck movement then sure ship Jake out tomorrow. But there are maybe two of those who are "available" in the entire NHL. John Carlson who will cost dollars not players and you can acquire without losing Gardiner, and Dougie Hamilton, where the package to get him that would fit the Flames needs would be more along the lines of giving talented forwards, rather than defensemen. Tanev would be nice as well but again it's tough to see why Gardiner would be included given Vancouver's timeline. You'd be more looking at someone like Liljegren than Gardiner

Moving out Jake Gardiner will make the Leafs worse not better. Quite frankly it would be very very stupid. Do they lean too heavily on him? Absolutely. On a deep defensive team Gardiner is paired with an effective top 4 RHD where he becomes mostly required to pass and produce offence and looks incredible. The Leafs options for pairing him are Zaitsev (worked last season when Zaitsev was good, didn't work this year when he spend the entire season playing like shit), Polak (who is always shit) and Hainsey who is already playing with Rielly. If they can bring him in a top level partner or manage to turn Zaitsev back into what he was last season Gardiner will be fine. Actually he'll be better than that, he'll probably continue to be an elite puck mover and creator, average defensively and with someone who can actually cover for him form a dominant pairing.

The right side of the defence is clearly the issue not the left. Hainsey was fantastic early, got injured, and came back looking awful. Is he still injured? Maybe. Maybe he's just 37 and killed nearly the full two minutes of every penalty the Leafs took all year. He at minimum needs a workload reduction. Zaitsev was awful this season. He was good last year and I get why they tried to lock him up long term, he looked like that kind of player but man was he ever shit. He completely forgot how to play guys entering the zone on him and went from kinda OK at denying zone entries to terrible. He went from a guy who could make a good first pass to completely reliant on Gardiner/Rielly/Dermott/whoever to do it for him. Like Polak level reliant. No one is taking on that contract so Zaitsev isn't getting moved but they need to fix whatever went wrong for him this year immediately. I'd imagine all of that is still in there somewhere but he really needs to bring it back. And then we have Polak. Who is awful at everything except penalty killing where he's only below average. And takes so many penalties it counteracts that moderate use for him because he can't help kill the penalty if he's the one sitting. Never should have been in the lineup, never should be again and was a complete boat anchor for whichever player got stuck with the task of carrying him around that game. Except for the playoffs where he upped his game to an average 3rd pair level and I have a ton of respect for him for doing that. For all the crap I'll give him you can't say Polak is why the Leafs didn't win the first round so good for him.

Fix up the right side, pair them with Rielly, Gardiner and Dermott, rest Freddie more in the regular season, and run 4 fast effective forward lines and this team is a contender next year. Huge sweeping changes aren't needed to this roster. A few effective tweaks and one big add and this team is competing with the Lightning and Bruins for the Atlantic next year. And let's not forget, the Leafs as currently constructed, incomplete and flawed as they are, just pushed the 3rd best team in the league to the final period of game 7. With almost every notable core piece of the team under 28 years old. Drastic changes to the core aren't needed

Whenever he was played with skill guys and not on the 4th line he looked fantastic. And even with those guys he looked ok. He'll break out next year with Komarov and JVR leaving holes for him to jump up in the lineup

v. Tampa in the Final.
Nashville gets it's heart broken again.

7/8, 3 perfect, no real upsets in the first round.

For this round...
Pens in 7
Winnipeg in 7
Knights in 6
Lightning in 6

These are all very good, exciting series, and tough to call. I was going to say Winnipeg v. Nashville is the hardest to call, but then I changed my mind each pick. Part of me almost hopes Ovie finds a way to beat the Pens, it's almost getting to Charlie Brown football territory.

Fuck TB.

That said, were the fans at the Garden last night singing "Livin' on a Prayer" after the B's took the lead in the 3rd?

Still but early but man a shitty start. 20 seconds in..

Caps and Pens, winner of game 1 takes the series and the Cup; Unless it’s the Caps, then they lose to the Pens. Eff it, I’m going C-A-P-S, caps, caps, caps. This is the year.
