Official Women's Division Discussion #25

They will probably do Holly/Cyborg 2 if the Amanda fight does not line up. This is the reason why Holly is staying at 145. She will always be 1 fight away from a title shot at 145 and we have already seen how badly she did at 135. Holly has a huge pay jump in her contract for title fights. 145 is basically perfect for her, as long as she does not mind fighting Cyborg over and over.

Didn't realize she had a huge pay jump for title fights.

I'm just not confident she fares much better in a rematch, she doesn't really have the power to contend with Cyborg and outside of her fighting the perfect fight strategy or really evolving in her skills I'm not sure how she gets a victory.

Has Anderson been training during her hiatus? I never tried to dig into her story, but I got the impression that her training schedule may have been derailed. I sure hope her skills have improved since her last outing. Running around throwing bombs with her hands down will only get her so far. If she can combine some skill with her crazy power, she might be a wild card in the FW division.

Is there any speculation as to how Invicta might fare if that crazy TV deal happens? It would be great if they had some capital injected into the organization.

As long as Megan Anderson stays in KC training with Krause, I don't expect her to improve beyond her present state.

Anderson is just as annoying as Holm to me.. two girls with virtually unlimited athletic poetential.. and it’s wasted on guys playing boxing coach.

Almost forgot about Cortney Casey versus Michelle Waterson this weekend. So much drama last week, lol. Glad it's behind us.

For an unusual fight check out Casey's last scrap v Herrig. It's so weird, they barely move just bang. Rogan commented it's like they're fighting in a phone booth. At one point Casey spits blood at Felice. Later flips her the finger to which Herrig responds with double birds. Immediately after Felice discounted it - said they're just two competitors. Along with her graciousness regarding her loss to Karolina, Felice has matured.

Michelle has good movement. She should force more movement from Casey. If Casey can get Michelle into the clinch she can utilize her size advantage. Michelle probably won't be able to pull off her hip - arm throws against Cast Iron Casey. The question that intrigues me is whether Michelle can beat the much bigger Casey.

Casey vs. Herrig was a shit-tier fight. You're right, they barely moved, but they didn't bang at all. It was like they were both waiting to counter. It was the Machida vs. Anderson Silva fight we never got and never wanted.

Casey needs to change that gameplan if she wants to win this fight. One of Michelle's weaknesses is her response to pressure. Casey needs to come forward and throw hands, feet, elbows.. the kitchen sink. Otherwise, Michelle is just gonna throw power kicks until she lands one on the liver located in that giant target that is Casey's torso.

The other interesting part of this fight is the ground game. Both of these women have sub-par takedown defense, but Casey's is much worse AND Waterson has 10 times better takedown ability. Once on the ground, they are both dangerous.

I think Waterson takes this to the ground quickly and then things get freaky.

Waterson via RNC in the second.

Delboni has a couple good televised wins over Liana Pirosin & Joice Mara. Didn't get to watch the Pirosin fight as it was happening at exact same time as Rose/Joanna II, but Delboni seems like she should be quite physical for an atomweight. If Joice Mara could make 105 that'd be swell too, she's a solid rookie & looked smaller than Delboni.

Swedish kickboxer Bea Malecki at the UFC Performance Institute. Still not sure what weight class she'll settle in MMA (probably 145?), but her amatuer fights have been at 155.

Renato Moicano's wife is apparently a 5'8" strawweight.

Cortney Casey is a fairly well known commodity, a strawweight fighter who was considered one of the better up-and-coming fighters in the still-developing world of women’s mixed martial arts. Casey first came into the UFC on short notice to fight Joanne “Jojo” Calderwood at UFC Fight Night 72, engaging in a spirited, albeit losing, battle with the muay thai specialist and mixed martial arts veteran. Since that loss, Casey has been stunning in the unevenness of her performances, only showing consistency in the fact that she continues to lose fights to the higher caliber, more experienced, and more physically gifted fighters she has faced (Calderwood, Seo Hee Ham, and Claudia Gadelha). Today I am taking a look at the five things that have kept Casey from maximizing her gifts and becoming an elite -- or even consistent -- fighter in the Ultimate Fighting Championship:

Amanda Serrano went through hell there. Majority Draw. These boxers think they're the shit. She tried to stand up after it and staggered head first in to the cage.

Ok, I got to watch the Amanda Serrano fight and I put on my Analyst hat since I had been waiting to see how she would would do for a long time. I apologize if this is a long post.

Score: I scored the fight a draw.

Overall:
Fought a very tough opponent. Opponent was mainly a grappler with average wrestling and average striking. You can see how athletic and quick Amanda is and that will be a real nice asset as her career continues.

Striking:
Clearly was the better striker which is something we should see from a boxer. This was a major red flag for Heather Hardy. Heather has yet to look good striking in MMA. Amanda had trouble checking and blocking kicks. She tried to incorporate leg kicks and body kicks to her striking. They still need work but I love that she is expanding her striking. At points in this fight she did a terrible job of cutting off the cage. If you look back you will even see points where both fighters were parallel to the cage. Understandably she had problems blocking elbows.

Conditioning:
Cardio seemed fine when striking. She was not ready for the drain that grappling puts on your cardio though. You can see all the clinching slowly draining her but once she had that grappling exchange that ended with her in a guillotine she was gassed. Once her cardio went her striking defense turned into Ronda. She also gave up an easy takedown when she was gassed.

Clinch Grappling on Cage:
I was surprised at how well her clinch grappling was. You can see how much work she put into it. Her opponent just could not get her down and if she was even close to going down she would pop right back up. A weakness with this area is that she does not know how to disengage a clinch. She was in them for way too long. Learning how to do this could help with her cardio.

Takedown Defense in Center:
She did well in this area for this being her debut. She stopped a deep shot but would have been taken down if she did not fall against the cage. The second big shot she was taken down easy but she was gassed at that point.

Ground Grappling:
This was to be expected but she was TERRIBLE in this area. like I said previously, you could see all the work she did to improve her cage clinch grappling. She looked lost from the very 1st second her back in the mat. 1st she fell for the grappler trick of falling down to draw you in. This was the beginning of things going badly for Amanda. She got tricked to try and GnP her opponent but just ended getting tied up in grappling exchanges that ended with Amanda in a tight guillotine.

Right after the takedown in the 3rd round she had a chance to go for half guard but she gave up side control. During side control she lift her leg to stop full mount attempt but she lifted the wrong leg and pretty much handed full mount to her opponent. Her opponent made a mistake and went for half guard instead. She made no attempts to even try and get full guard. In the midst of her opponent trying to strike in half guard there were opportunities for Amanda to force a scramble but she did not. She pretty much just gave up full mount. She was lucky she did not get RNC.

Overall, this was a very tough fight for her debut. She showed some great things but she also has a lot she needs to improve on. This fight might have ended in a draw but I finished watching this fight thinking that Amanda is clearly the best prospect of all the girls that came from boxing so far. If she fills those holes she can be a good MMA fighter. Only time will tell how well she will be able to fill those holes.

I thought she would have more power. The girl she fought was 3-4, undersized and stepped in on less than a weeks notice. I didn't really see the promise.

I thought Casey did enough from the bottom with her offensive grappling to earn the decision. Michelle was able to secure the takedowns, but didn't do a ton of GnP and Casey was constantly threatening with submissions. Close fight though and Casey didn't do herself any favors by not staying at range striking.

So for those who saw it, how did Waterson/Casey go?

Waterson got lit up in punching range, but fortunately for her, Casey's takedown defence is even worse than Condit's. If Casey had the slightest clue on how to stop a takedown or what to do in the clinch, the fight would've been a complete blowout instead of a close decision. I was a bit surprised that Waterson could somewhat fight smart, and use takedowns to score points and run out the clock.

I'd say Waterson is the same as ever, pressure her a bit and throw some combos at her and she backs herself right into the fence. If Casey wasn't a)a potato, or b)useless in the clinch, she could've easily unloaded punches on Waterson while she was stuck on the fence, but instead she kept running into the clinch and getting stalled out. If she'd just stayed back a bit it would've been game over for Michelle. Did I mention that Michelle blocks punches with her face? Yeah, that too, it was kinda sad how she kept walking into Casey's right hand and knocked back towards the fence.

Overall, I was not impressed by this fight. Lots of action, but also rather sloppy with lots of questionable choices by both fighters, especially Casey. It was a throwback to the WMMA fights of a generation ago where fighters just threw down and scrambled. I can't say I was surprised though.
