With Lesnar fighting Cormier, we again have the usual complaints of "undeserved title shot" etc. The problem is, you're thinking of MMA as a sport like Hockey, Basketball, Football, etc., which is completely merit based, ie. points obtained during the season determines your position in the standings and the champion is determined by playoffs.

Stop comparing the UFC to organizations like the NFL, NBA, NHL, etc. and realize that the UFC is more like a hybrid of something like that and something like WWE - fighters need to self-promote, popularity is a factor in who gets opportunities, etc. Once you come to the realization that MMA is not a pure sport like baseball, hockey, etc., and realize that it has elements of both sports and "sports entertainment", the UFC starts to make a lot more sense.

The best thing to do is just sit back and enjoy the show, and chuckle at people who have not come to this realization yet.

Chael says it the best. It's "spectator sport". The most important aspect of that is spectator, that is why its listed first. This is spectator driven, always has been always will be.

You know, at least you're saying is a hybrid of sport and entertainment. Some people around here talk as if it's zero percent sport and one hundred percent money making.

Every sport in the world is spectator driven. WME is just greedy and they want as much money as possible.

it only mattered when the sale of UFC came up .. all to drive the price tag up .. now it is in make $$$ mode until paid for .. might see it become more so as years pass ..

An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

SPORT IS ENTERTAINMENT

There's a big problem with the ufc trying to make it about the brand.
I don't give a fuck that WME makes more money than the bald guy from bellator. The athletes should come first and foremost

In MLB and NBA etc. You can buy players and championships (Yankees, golden State). Plus point shaving is still too common.

The rankings matter, I get it, but they aren't straight and narrow sports.

I don't know if I'm misunderstanding you or if you are being obtuse but the "sports entertainment" I refer to is pro-wrestling.

The point of my post is that MMA/UFC is like a combination of that and actual sports.

Holy shit a private, for profit company wants as much money as possible?? whowouldhavethunkit???

Nah.
I think that you are the one failing to see what is happening. And it is sad.

See, UFC is not supposed to be what you said. But people like you (either passive) or the ones who actively suck up to them when they do such things are the ones that allow it to happen.
UFC was booming when Anderson SIlva and GSP were dominating the sport.
They did not need any gimmicks.

The SOnnen came, and the UFC noticed that someone with a big mouth is also good for their pockets. So what that SOnnen had no talent to beat Silva or be a champion? he brought news, and eyes. So they start actively looking for heels and got Ronda and then Conor.
Now, Ronda is out and Conor is a keyboard warrior, and the UFC stoop to catering to cringe-worthy dickheads like Colby.
Because YOU allow it to happen.

No, you are mistaken... and it is costing the sport.
But people like you will never realise it. Because even if UFC is to break because they are making a mockery of the sport, you would laugh it off and claim it was just a fad anyway...

All sports are by definition entertainment. NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, UFC...all entertainment. There is no such thing as a real sport that isn’t entertainment. It is literally what it says if you look up the word sport in any dictionary.

Despite the loss in PPV buys it seems they are moving in the right direction, getting with ESPN is a good move. Gotta remember the UFC is a young sport still so they might need to do gimmicks to survive monetarily

It does not change the fact it is slowly draining any type of legitimacy the Fertitta's built into it.....It's since the Conor Era started that it has resembled a turd slowly getting sucked down the toilet.

An organization like Pride would be so welcomed right now.....

You are decrying the UFC's legitimacy but saying Pride would be welcome? Pride was 10000% more about entertainment than the UFC ever has been.
