Persona 5

I think P4 was the only one that got significant exposure in NA, before this one. I had always heard about them, but never really knew what kind of games they were. I remember seeing the PSP games in the store, way back, but the series never really stood out to me.

Here's a good video on the series, if you've got the time:

Game first caught my attention back in 2007; I was watching that old network, g4tv I think it was called, and they were reviewing games, one of which happened to be persona 3. They were talking about the controversy of the characters shooting themselves in the head, and they gave the game a really good review. I ended up seeing it at gamestop about a year later and decided to check it out.

Welp, that's that. Finally beat it. 120 hours almost on the nose. Probably the longest run of any JRPG I've ever played.

One complaint about the final area, is that it doesn't really prepare you for it, and just throws you in there, and you better have some SP supplements, or you're fucked. It's essentially a boss rush, and your SP will take a beating, no matter what. If I didn't have 20 or so of those "Mystery Stew" items, I don't know what I would've done. The whole thing really made me regret burning my Soma's on the previous palace. Those things would've come in quite handy. Still managed to get through it, and only got killed once by the final, final boss, or rather my main character did, which is game over, and that's bullshit, but whatever. Eeek'd it out on my second try.

Overall the story was...okay, I guess. It never really did anything too spectacular, but it was engaging enough. It played it pretty safe though, and there really weren't any standout moments. What made up for the ho-hum story, were the creative environments and charming characters. I was never grabbed by the story, but I was never bored either.

The combat was spectacular. JRPGs have a tendency to get a little grindy, and tedious with their combat, but this one never felt like that. It was always fun to fight, and I loved all the twists they threw in there, like being able to bargain with the enemy, and all the various special attacks. It also never got stupid hard, with absurd difficulty spikes, which I appreciated. The difficulty seemed to evolve at a natural pace, and was just challenging enough, to where you at least felt vulnerable, but never overwhelmed and frustrated. You never knew which shadow you might run into, that could fuck you up. Even if they were few and far between, the threat was always there. Looking back, it was pretty easy, but it never felt too easy, if that makes any sense.

I could go on, but I'll leave it at that, as I think I've ranted enough about this game in here.

Final verdict: 9/10

Never played 1 or 2; 3 is really good, especially the p3p version, 4 is great, and the vita version is even better (p4g).

Dumbass :D

At least you managed to escape before he slaughtered you and your team.

I actually gave him another go last night and was finally able to finish him. Had to rely on my level 85 personas (raphael, uriel, and alice). Having futaba ranked up is of paramount importance, as she is able to switch out your party members in the middle of battle when they get knocked out, and she can also block an attack that will kill someone from the team once per battle.

Boy you're gonna be mad at how I beat him:

Encountered him during "flu season" and he started the battle inflicted with despair. Died in 3 turns :D

I've seen a few places say thats the best time to face him

By far the best way. Nets you loads of cash and exp. I ended up farming him to level my party up to level 99 so I could stand a chance finishing up my NG+ on the hardest difficulty.

I beat him about 3 times doing that also, got to about level 81 or so, but I wanted to beat him in an actual match; since the last time I beat him, I've faced him another three times successfully. Once you get satan and/or michael, it's much easier. I hit him with debilitate, then I charge and use black viper.

If you want a real challenge, try facing the twin wardens. Those girls make the reaper look like a walk in the park.

I did challenge them to get the trophy. Man they must have killed my team like 4-5 times before I managed to beat them. Definitely one of the hardest fights in the entire game.

Finally beat them.
Damn that was tough.
I got close a few times, then they'd start spamming attacks that my team members were weak to over and over.

The worst was when I had them on low health and I'd kill one only to have her get revived.

Guys the ultimate edition is selling pretty cheap on psn now. Is this game worth getting? I've had it on my list a while now. I love rpg's but haven't played a jrpg.

Do you at least know what to expect from a JRPG?

The biggest gripe some people have with them, is the turn based combat, and a heavy emphasis on storytelling. Just know that it isn't Skyrim, Diablo, or Fallout in terms of gameplay, and you will be sitting through a LOT of cut scenes. It's also worth noting that the game is very Japanese, literally and figuratively. If anime style crazyness turns you off, you might want to give it a pass.

If you know what you're getting into with a JRPG, and aren't turned off by their staples, then yeah, it's totally worth it. It's one of the best JRPG's in recent memory.

If you're still unsure, just go check out some gameplay vids, and see if it's up your alley.

It's one of the best games I've ever played. I would watch a video of a play through though cause it's a lot of dialogue and doing social things outside of dungeons which some people don't like. I honestly thought I wouldn't like that stuff but I actually enjoyed it most of the time.

I've been watching my girlfriend make her way through this, she's at the last level (Casino?) and has 200h+ in the game...

Every time I look over I'm in shock at how amazing it looks, such phenomenal enemy design and narrative.

I've had this since day one and barely played it. I went to play it during quarantine but I didn't have the disc in the case.

It turned up during cleaning a few days ago, so I restarted and I'm now I'm a few hours in, been playing it much of the day.

This game is fucking awesome! It's so damn slick. Anyone pick up Royal?

I'm a huge Persona fan, as I love anime and always liked modern settings in HS/college Japan. It always takes me back to my HS/Uni days, when I played the 1st Persona title.

I know this thread is old, but I had to get my fellow Sherbros thoughts on this and the recent Royal version. I don't think l'll anti up the $$ for the upgrade but did any of you? Can you transfer saves over?

Right now I'm just wrapping up the first story with this douche

Yo is that dude going down on her in the Catherine screenshot?

Yes and No, theres an option that comes up when you first load it up asking if you have a save for P5 standard but your progress from it doesn't carry over but you do get on 4/9 a cardboard box appears in your room with clothes but it restocks on 4/12 with 50,000yen , 3 x revival beads and 3 x bead chains as a bonus which will help with the first palace at least.

Just now playing this. Has to be one of the best real RPGs I have ever played.

I like that the game is story driven and I actually care about what's going on. My only complaint is sometimes it turns into just being a movie that makes you press x a lot. So often I want to go do things in town or craft and that damn cat says I have to immediately go to sleep. That shit gets old. Just make it a movie so I know when I can actually PLAY the game.

That's my only complaint so far. The combat/exploration is 10/10. Gold standard for turn based rpgs imo.
