Where does this number come from? And what exactly does it mean as guys are obviously hit with more than that but do not get knocked out Is he saying if you hit them at the perfect spot, angle, etc? Is this based on some study?

Chad Dawson jabs quicker than a cobra. That’s all that needs to be said.

How times change.
These days Naseem is more into 3.5 pound of ice cream per day.

I suggest him and Maidana make a comeback and fight each other for the cupcake world championship.

is he talking about his friend Amir K?

Maybe if you drop something with that weight onto the head of someone. Kinda like the Jack Dempsey baby analogy that could kill a man dropped from high enough. But that's obviously a lot more pressure than 3.5lbs.
He was most likely bullshitting the general rule of thumb is to not take random shit fighters say as facts

lbs is not a measure of pressure, it is a measure of mass. Even so, pressure is not what knocks you out - if I sat on Nas's head, it wouldnt knock him out.

Rapid acceleration of the brain is what knocks people out - this can be caused by mass, but it is the change in velocity, or more precisely the rate of change in velocity, that does the trick.

3.5 lbs of icecream a day will kill a man.

Thats why Naseem only eats 3.4

Pressure is the force applied perpendicular to the surface of an object per unit area over which that force is distributed.

He could be right but he doesnt specify the area as in 3.5 lbs/ per square inch / cm / mm...etc

No, what he meant was all it takes is 3.5 lbs of lightly applied pressure to knock an MMA fighter out.

This shit is far from an exact science.

Many ways to skin a cat here.

Beat me to it. This is what I gleaned, Prince was a better boxer then he is a physicist.

And yeah the rate of acceleration of the head is the key to punch power. The rate of change of momentum is governed by the force transferred to the head which is given by F=ma. So the mass of the object hitting the head and the speed it's travelling at determine how quickly the head which is the second static mass will accelerate away. HW's hit with higher mass and rougly the same speed so that's why they knock people out easier.

And as for the force that boxers punch with well a study of some Olympic amateurs found that SHW's punched with an average of 4400 N (Kg times gravity so rougly 440kg). Even the flyweight punched with 3300N. Which is a lot more than Princes 3.5lbs figure.

The fact that Ward never fought a cobra is going to taint his LHW legacy. He beat Chad with such ease, pretty obvious Andre just didn't want to take the risk with the low reward opponent. It's been a long time since we've even talked about cobras around here, let alone in a championship context.

so this is not some boxing myth? He had to have pulled this number form somewhere? a trainer? or do you think he just made it up on the spot? Googling actually brought me to another sherdog thread where the same number was used, maybe they were a prince fan?

Look, none of today's current scene of fighters are the type with the grit and determination to compete in the Cobraweight division, that's why they had to abolish the whole weightclass, because the fights were 10xs more dangerous and exciting just like the cobra namesake would lead one to believe...
