Rickson Gracie: Modern BJJ Black Belts Remind Me of Karate Practitioners Clueless of Jiu-Jitsu

In my book.. Rickson is such a legend and icon in martial arts that he gets a pass to say what ever he wants..

I have tremendous respect for Rickson, but even in his prime, Rickson would be destroyed by today's fighter. Someone like Maia or Jacare or even Big Nog would embarrass him
Even now Big Nog would destroy either Maia or Jacare in MMA.

So many people missing the point. He isn't wrong; not every school has a high standard on those black belts.

Not Jacare, man. He looked so bad against Struve, and that was almost 3 years ago. Jacare 1st rd KO.
no way he could beat Big Nog in MMA. Not even now when Nog is a shadow of his former self.

Rickson lost a lot of his "vale tudo/fighting" credit when it was revealed that his two most famous fights (with Zulu) had "special rules" that the Gracies didn't disclose to the public. (which the Gracies are NOTORIOUS for; just like they attempted with the Royler/Bravo rematch). Zulu wasn't allowed to punch Rickson with a closed fist or kick/stomp him on the ground; Zulu's MAIN "strengths". Sorry but they all need to be called out for their bullshit. (Renzo gets a pass though, he was always down to fight and took his losses like a fucking man)

Regardless, Rickson is right. He wasn't bashing other martial arts, he was criticising current BJJ which is more sport oriented.

"make sure to get your black belts from Gracie University.. certainly no woo woo involved...."

Are we at Sherdog, such morons that we can't understand the quote? He is not talking about MMA as a sport, he is talking about Jiu Jitsu as a fighting style. To many, as you've just pointed out, it has become only a part of the "ring" with rounds and rules. "What about Hughes", "What about Sakuraba", we ask, but place them in an open field with no time limits or judges and things change tremendously. You may find the action boring but the results may surprise you. Two of the greatest fights I have ever seen would never have occurred or may have had different results under the new rules: Gracie vs Kimo and Gracie vs Severn. Under the new rules, I believe both fighters would have "Matt Hughes-ed" Gracie but under the old rules Gracie would have beaten Hughes. Show some respect and don't rush to elite levels of Shertardedness just because a Gracie speaks out every once in a while.

How would Hughes have lost? by breaking the other guy arm before making him a punching bag until the ref stops the fight? Also, the Saku fight was with special rules set by, guess who?, yes, the Gracie!

And the fact that he talks about bjj and not mma, makes no difference. How many Gracie jj are winning the ADCCC?

If he is complaining about the fake black belts, which you get in a McDojo, he is right. But the quote is too short to know what is he talking about specifically, and it sounds like a smart-ass, as he used back in the day.

Jacare is so much smaller and he doesn't punch anything close to as hard as Hendo. Not even close.

"If we don’t do something very soon, Jiu-Jitsu will lose its fight-identity". Rickson has ALWAYS stated HIS ENTIRE LIFE that "Bjj (specifically GJJ) is all you need" for a "real" fight. He's just not being as "blunt" with his latest comment. That's why Renzo and Ryan disagreed with Rickson's approach when they were both fighting in PRIDE. Renzo - "It's no longer which martial art is better, it's which martial artist is more overall prepared for the fight".

Cool story Mr. Rickson.

I wonder why you did not show Royce how to outgrapple Matt Hughes.
Yes, if only he'd taught him to time travel back a decade. Matt's like 8 years younger than Royce, put them together in their prime and see who wins.

I still got Hughes.
He could keep it standing and jab-low kick him like Renzo.

How come real BJJ master doesn't know how to defend low kick, lol!

Is this the dude who fought a guy who was minding his business, just flying his kite on the beach?

1980's grainy video?

Bully!

Does it matter? This is just one of those black belts that don't know $hit, according to Rickson. Prime, no prime...

Gracie BJJ is great until you can defend it. Then back to punching in the face and wrestling. Those Brazilian wizards certainly deserve credit they get for upstaging everything but now are largely irreverent. Will we ever see another Gracie in UFC? Doubt it.

about Renzo, he's also the type of guy to group assault a bouncer that didn't let him in a club or something. not very manly...
