Russia will protect its servicemen, Israeli actions are ‘reckless’ – Foreign Ministry

The Israeli actions in Syria, which Moscow says resulted in the downing of the Il-20 plane and the death of its crew, are “reckless” and “unfriendly,” the Russian Foreign Ministry told Israeli Ambassador Caren Cohen-Gat. Russia will take all necessary measures to protect its servicemen, who “support the Syrian people in their fight against terrorism,” the ministry stressed. Cohen-Gat was summoned to the ministry on Tuesday following the loss of the Russian plane during an overnight Israeli air raid on Syria’s Latakia. Israeli F-16s used Russian plane as “cover” when it was about to land at Russia’s Khmeimim airbase, prompting Syrian anti-aircraft units to mistakenly shoot it down, the Defense Ministry said. All 15 people on board were killed.
 
If it was a Russian aircraft, it just as likely crashed due to mechanical unreliability and poor maintenance than to an enemy missile.

So reports that the israelis actually used a russian plane as cover for their airstrike. That is just... Israel is truly a devious nation.

Russia basically single handedly won the conflict for the goverment even though world opinion turned against them and gulf states was pouring billions in with tacit american support, they still pulled through. The talks about a russian "Vietnam" was nothing more than a western fantasy and they did it with bombs that would've been dropped in Siberia anyways. But here they look weak and confused. There must be a russian response in some manner, when Turkey shot down the plane Russia basically annihilated the turkmen rebels, operating along the turkish border with turkish support, and hurt the turkish economy. That said, the ties between Russia and Israel is much closer than between Russia and Turkey, that are historical enemies.

I don't think Russia and Israel have ties per se.

I think it is better described as they work together when it is beneficial to both, and they engage in cloak and dagger games with each other when their interests are at odds.

There are tons of russian-heritaged jews in Israel. In fact, the soviet union dwarfs any other point of origin. A strong russo-israeli bond is probably more natural than between US and Israel. This is not even counting the fact that jews dominate among the oligarchs, many being in Putins close circle.

I won't argue against that, but I will say that historical ties between Iran and USSR trump that.

Russia and Israel probably could be real allies if it wasn't for Iran. Iran brings an actual benefit to being allies with. They have a army bigger then a football team, natural resources, and an economy bigger then Rhode Island, ect.

Israel just doesn't bring much to the table.
