Dragonlord Editorial: Zachary Levi as Shazam and the SHAZAM! Movie

1x9fAam.jpg

Two days ago, the comic book fandom was shook when it was announced that Zachary Levi was cast as Shazam in the DC Comics live-action adaptation of Shazam! Many voiced their displeasure at the casting since Levi doesn’t have the ideal physique to play the World’s Mightiest Mortal. Some said this is the worst superhero casting decision ever made while a few have declared that the Shazam! movie is doomed to fail.

For those unfamiliar with the character, Shazam, formerly known as Captain Marvel, is a DC comic book superhero. He is the alter ego of Billy Batson, a boy who, by speaking the magic word "SHAZAM" (acronym of six "immortal elders": Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury), can transform himself into a costumed adult with the powers of superhuman strength, speed, flight, and other abilities. Shazam is widely recognized as one of the most powerful superhero in the DC Universe, able to go toe-to-toe with Superman or Black Adam.

Zachary Levi is an American actor best known for his role as Chuck Bartowski in the popular spy comedy series Chuck. He has appeared in Heroes Reborn, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel and voiced Flynn Rider in Tangled. Levi is no stranger to superhero films as he played Fandral the Dashing in Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok.

I'll address some of the issues and complaints I've heard regarding the casting and give my own thoughts on the subject matter.

"The casting sucks because he doesn’t look the part physically."

Levi is tall (6 feet and 3.5 inches) which is a plus in portraying a statue-esque superhero. He doesn’t have a muscular physique but it's nothing a visit to the gym can't fix. Even muscular guys like Chris Hemsworth and Hugh Jackman have normal builds when they're not filming a superhero movie. To prepare for his role in 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, The Office star John Krasinski gained 25 pounds of muscles after 4 months of training. Shazam! is set to start shooting in Feb. 2018 (4 months from now), just the right amount of time for Levi to get in shape. Levi won’t probably be muscularly swollen but a buffed or ripped body is a more realistic outcome.

Aside from Levi getting in shape, the Shazam costume will likely enhance his physical appearance and make him bigger or more muscular than he looks. With the right paddings in place, they can make him look as swollen as Ben Affleck’s Batman.

[Personally, my current choice for the Shazam actor would be Brandon Routh. I don’t care if he played Superman before or that he is currently playing the Atom in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow since the DC live-action universe is disorganized anyway. Brandon has all the requirements – height, build, good looks, charisma, amiable, endearing and funny - to efficiently play the Big Red Cheese.]

"I can’t take him seriously because he has a goofy or gentle face."

It’s understandable that people will always associate Levi with his Chuck character which was an awkward, sheepish nerd. Levi is a good actor and like any good actor, they can adapt to almost whatever role they are given. He can look solemn and serious if he wants to, like in the godawful Heroes Reborn miniseries. He also surprised everyone by playing against type when he was cast as the suave ladies man Fandral in Thor: The Dark World.

Levi’s gentle face works in his favor since he is playing a child in an adult body in Shazam! The character needs to display a child-like zeal and wonder as he discovers these awesome powers and learns how to use them for the first time. Shazam will probably at times act immaturely and make an embarrassment of himself. They need an actor that can give off a “gee-whiz” vibe and Levi can pull that off.

"Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam is so much bigger that he’ll make Zachary Levi’s Shazam look like a skinny guy."

This actually works in Shazam’s favor as the good guys generally are smaller compared to their opponents. So when the inevitable showdown between Dwayne Johnson’s intimidating Black Adam happens, it will give off an underdog aura to Shazam and will make their fight that more interesting as Shazam struggles to overcome his more physically imposing adversary. Everybody loves an underdog. Think Iron Man versus the Iron Monger, Batman versus Bane, or Thor versus Hulk.

"This movie is going to bomb and will ruin the DC Extended Universe."

This might just be the optimist or futurist in me talking, but I foresee Shazam! will surprise everyone how fun and enjoyable it will be. The premise and the casting lead me to believe that this will be a family-style, action-comedy adventure in the same vein as some of the Marvel Studios’ fun, lighthearted films mixed with Tom Hanks' Big. Shazam! is likely going to be the first and most Marvel Studios-type film the DCEU has produced so far. Put it this way, I have more faith in the Shazam! movie than in the upcoming Aquaman solo movie.

In closing, I don’t really blame or begrudge anyone that does not like the casting, which I totally understand where they are coming from, nor am I trying to force anyone on changing their minds (well maybe open up just a little). I just have a different perspective from most people and predict that many of the doubters will change their tune when WB unveils an official image of Levi in the Shazam costume many months from now. History suggests that what may be initially be an uncoventional pairing (Michael Keaton/Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and a few more) ended up being a great casting. The last time I did this type of editorial was way back in 2010 when a lot of posters were complaining when Chris Evans was announced as Captain America and I wrote my piece basically saying that I think he'd be good in the role and that people should give the former Human Torch a chance. Seven years later, everything seemed to have worked out for the best.

I want nothing to do with this movie

I think this movie is gonna end up being the one that makes American audiences really grow tired of the genre, if it does happen.

By the time this is out we'll be Infinity War-d out, Marvel will be gearing up the next phase and DC probably will be cancelling movie after movie. I don't think the casting will even be the issue.

I don't follow your reasoning. Shazam is ultra family friendly and totally unique among DC and Marvel properties. It won't hurt the genre unless it sucks, which s always a possibility.

If anything I think Infinity War is at risk of causing fatigue. Not because it won't be good. Or destruction porn.

But the risk is that after 10 years of build up, Infinity War amounts to very little in the way of payoffs (narrative and emotional), and with another wave of phases coming, audiences decide: "Nah, I'm good!"

I think Infinity War has to deliver. Thanos has to put a bunch of Avengers into pine boxes :)

But on topic, the more I think about it, the more I like this casting. Love how outside the box DC is with there picks. And the track record backs them up.

Dont see why the Rock can’t be Shazam. If a kid could say a magic word and turn into anyone it would probably be The Rock

At least they have the Z in common....

Meh, got no feelings towards this casting either way. They already cast the Rock in this movie, so that alone will sell tickets. To me, that was like DC securing ticket sales.

The fact that the majority of non animated DC stuff bombs means that if they follow the same shitty formula they have been in almost every movie they have been making, this will go the same way regardless of this dudes casting.

That being said, this movie will still ONLY be good with some comedy thrown in, and will not work if they run the serious dark vibe. Both Rock and Zachary have the comic acting style down, but the sheer goofiness they often bring could be too much.

In closing, it's DC, and I hope it bombs based on their track record and inability to copy the Marvel formula. If they succeed in copying the formula, they will finally have a good movie on their hands besides hotness Gadot in skimpy clothes. (Which I still won't watch because it's DC, and I can just Google pics of her)

Actually, I agree with this. The hype leading into IW is massive. Just being, "good" won't cut it. IW has to knock it out of the ball park, then burn the park to the fucking ground. It has to eclipse every comic book movie that came before it, and leave the boards of DC and WB on suicide watch.

The bigger the hype, the bigger the pressure. And the easier it is to fuck up.

Good work @Dragonlordxxxxx but I was still hoping for Alan Ritchson. The movie still has a chance. As big a chance as any DC movie has.

But that's just what I'm referring to when I say 'Infinity War-d out'. People are so invested because it represents finality. I think half the reason super-hero movies have become THIS big, is because there was a journey laid out. Whether it's good or bad people are gonna go see it, because they've been watching it unfold for years already. The chances of it living up to over a decade's worth of expectations are minimal.

And considering Justice League doesn't exactly look primed to get people on-board for another journey, Shazam would really have to bring something new and intruiging to get people up for a "new" superhero. A kid becoming Superman-lite by saying the word 'shazam' is just not gonna do it. I can see it going hard comedy and being profitable, but if they make it serious with the same tone the DCCU currently has, I think it's gonna bomb memorably.

Don't know anything about this human, but he certainly doesn't look the part, to me. But I thought the same of Gale Gadot as WW, yet was incredibly wrong about that superficial assessment, so maybe he'll turn out to be a good fit.

Captain Marvel is an awesome character. Hopefully this fella has the acting ability to pull off the child beneath it all demeanor successfully. He can hit the gym and get swole to fill the physical demands of the role, but becoming Billy Batson, when Captain Marvel, is another undertaking entirely. You have to be able to simultaneously pull off possessing the wisdom of Solomon, while still maintaining a childlike personality/view of the world.

Loved his Justice league cartoon representation:

Good outlook. No one thought Chris Pratt was an ideal choice for Star Lord either. To me, Zach has that same appeal as Chris, and I wonder if that is the same kind of tone they will follow with Shazam. A funny hero who can be serious when needed. Which, since Shazam is literally a grown child, might compliment Levi’s comedic talents.

As long as Justce League is more fun, and more competently made than BvS i think the general public will be happy with the movie and DC happy with the outcome. They seemed to get the message: Be less serious, less plot, and less broad thematic strokes. Just let us relax and have fun. And JL looks like that: Whedon. Dudebro Mamoa. Funny Flash. And a run-time of under two hours. In regards to Aquaman id add: In James Wan i trust.

Originally Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam was supposed to be in the Shazam! movie but ever since they announced that Black Adam would get his own solo movie, it is now unclear if he'll even be in the Shazam! movie (some are saying he won't be in it). I can see a Black Adam appearing in a brief flashback or in a post-credits scene.

What you guys are saying could be true. But allow me to offer up a different perspective. Infinity War doesn't have to "eclipse every CBM" or to kill a lot of the main characters to be considered a success. Moviegoers have embraced the Marvel Cinematic Universe and their characters. Most of them consciously or subconsciously don't want their beloved characters killed. It's like when you were still reading or collecting comic books when you were young, you were not looking forward to each month's new issue hoping to see your favorite characters die. Same situation with your favorite cartoons growing up. The general public have grown attached to these MCU characters and they go out, buy a ticket and watch them on the big screen, hoping to be entertained, wanting to see their favorite characters in new adventures and journey alongside them to the next chapter of their stories.

But from all the things we have seen and heard so far, Avengers: Infinity War is going to be EPIC. So I am not worried there. It's going to deliver. The Russo Bros. made two of the best MCU films (Winter Soldier, Civil War) and I trust they'll give us another winner in Infinity War.

Oh, don't misunderstand me. Infinirty War will make a gazillion dollars and probably be well reviewed, as all MCU movies are. I'm not talking about it's success so much as the after taste that it maight leave with some fans after the hype and dust have settled. If nothing happened, how ya gonna sell another round of movies? This happens on TV all the time, series sell audiences wolf tickets and then just drag things ut until the people lose interest. But this is a movie series.. so it's fairly uncharted territory. I don't know nothin.' Nobody really knows.

If nothing else, i think Marvel does risk losing some of their audience as it ages, if it becomes obviously appartent that there's no there there after IW (But if WB and FOX don't make good movies... it won't matter eitherway).

But back to your beloved characters being killed off comment. You may be right to some extent. Especially with respect to small children. But... how many Superman's have died? Batman's? And they're still huge. Can the same be said for any MCU character not named Spider-Man? If the character is iconic, as opposed to the actor, the character's fanbase isn't going to dissapear (but really, who am i kidding. Downey-Man is to valuable for them to let go. Especially overseas.

PS. Epic clip indeed.

The rock is gonna look massive next to this guy when they do end up in the same movie. Maybe they'll make it work but hopefully he can be a likeable character.

so a weak homo that looks like a girl is playing an action hero? whats new, hollywood puts soft women looking "males" on these roles all the time, they put the sissy from The Pianist on a fucking Predator movie lmao, my point is, this isnt new.
