Got a sore throat Tuesday night and woke up Wednesday feeling like complete garbage. Guessing I never really got over the cold I had a few weeks ago and this was a relapse. Ended up taking the rest of the week off and starting feeling better yesterday, so I figured I'd hit the gym today then go back to resting for a few more days.
Decided on doing just doing a max day, as at this point I'm so off schedule there's no hope of getting back on track.
Squats felt probably the strongest they've ever felt. I was really debating whether to try for 345 or 350 and after 315 felt like I could've gotten it for 5 I just couldn't resist 350. Completely mindfucked myself as I rushed everything and basically forgot everything that had been working the past sets. Couldn't stand the idea of fucking up, what was, such a good squat session, so dropped to 315 and got 3 solid reps before failing the 4th.
Hadn't benched in a week and a half at this point, but started off strong nonetheless. I feel like narrowing my grip slightly has been a big improvement. Everything was flying up until 200, which wasn't tough but was a lot slower than I was hoping. Jumped to 220 and wasn't exactly encouragingly close. Tried to salvage the session with a rep PR at 205 but couldn't get the 2nd.
Deadlifts, ironically enough, didn't really feel great starting off; 225 was a lot slower than I'd have liked and it wasn't till 335 I started getting into a groove. Made a slight change from my usual and chalked up for 375. I usually only use chalk for my final sets, as my gym has a liquid chalk only rule and I try to limit how much dust gets on stuff. It ended up being a good decision, 375 went very smoothly. Still didn't have much confidence so I went for 410, a 5 lb increase from last cycle's best. It went up a lot smoother than I anticipated and I decided to jump up 10 more lbs. I could feel myself getting out of position as I broke it from the floor and figured that'd be it, but thought "ahh fuck it" and to my surprise was able to lock it out fairly easily, after getting it the first couple inches off the floor. It was definitely a fairly ugly effort though. It just hit me now that it was 420lbs, for some reason up until now I was thinking I deadlifted 415lbs even though I distinctly remember choosing to go up 10lbs and loading the 5 and 2.5lb plates on the bar.
All in all, a strong but very clumsy max day. Really happy to set a new hook grip PR and finally tie my long standing deadlift PR of 420. But squats and bench both ended pretty disappointingly. I'm not too upset about bench as I hit a PR of 215 early last week but that was after hitting a PR triple at 200, so I figured I'd have at least 5 more lbs in me. Squats felt great but I feel like I fucked up mentally. I'll probably do 1 or 2 light days next week and then try and retest squat and bench at the end of the week. Bodyweight right now is around 157-158, so roughly 3-4lbs heavier than last cycle.
