So did Goddard mess up the Simon fight?

The ref never stopped the fight. The final bell sounded before he did anything.
The ref stopped the fight at the final horn. He stopped it when he touched the fighters and the fighter released the choke. At that time one fighter got up, answering the final bell so to speak and the other kept riding his imaginary bicycle for a few moments looking at his dead ancestors so he never answered the final bell.

I thought he went out once his arms went flat on the canvas and stopped trying to defend the choke. It was obvious he was out once the fight ended, you can see it in that thousand yard stare they get.

Yeah this is a good point as well, the fact that his arms were already in dead fish mode even before the horn sounded.

If a fighter is out when the horn sounds, then he lost.

Whether it's a knockout, or in this case, a chokeout.

Its funny that anyone thinks there is anything to debate about. He was clearly out, and wasnt able to answer the final horn. It's the rules.

Same exact shit happened to chuck liddell his first fight against jeremy horn.

Fucking noobs

So why didn't the ref stop it before the bell sounded? Isn't that his job? Apparently in his judgment he wasn't out and if that's his judgment then he shouldn't be changing it after the fact.

It wasn't after the fact. He wasn't conscious for the final bell and the ref realized it and called the fight. If a fighter gets completely knocked out(punch lands before the bell) at 4:59.5 of the final round and the ref can't immediately recognize and waive the fight off in time before the bell sounds, did the guy make it to final bell? On to the score cards as he's unconscious on the mat? The only difference is that the guy came to quickly. The final bell can not via the rules save you. He was unconscious, he lost.

Even more than being the rules - which it is, thankfully - more importantly, it's also just the spirit of what a fight is. If you get choked out, you don't get to win. You lose.

And how do you know he didn't go unconscious at 5:00.5 or even later ? You can't tell me that Simon released the choke at exactly 5:00 as that's impossible to do even if he wanted to (and in fact he didn't - first there was the bell, then the ref's reaction, and then the release).

I bet I can tell y'all were Dom would weight in on this fight...

"HE'S NOT OUT HE'S NOT OUT" <{cruzshake}>

No, it's a lack of bloodflow. No offense, but you don't understand how this works. When someone wakes up from getting a clean blood choke, they don't start taking a bunch of deep breaths as if they had been drowning without air. They just wake up. Like he did.
Umm, you don’t understand how the body works, blood supplies oxygen to the brain, the oxygen comes from your lungs. This is why you breathe heavy during a workout, to get more oxygen back in your blood to supply it to the rest of your body.

He was out when the fight ended, how the fuck can he win a decision? Are you guys retarded?

The bell rang, the fight is over

Refs shouldn’t be able to call a stoppage after the time has expired

^This right here 100% . He made it to the bell. And the doctors were the ones keeping him grounded. Plus after being in a choke for an extended period of time, standing up isn't fun.

<[analyzed}>

He was moving his legs to show he wasn't out...

..but after watching the replay. His legs kept moving even tho he was out

Lol. Lack of bloodflow, which is bringing oxygen to the brain. He was also being "choked" as in his breathing passage, but likely both.

Yea. Tge confusion is because the ref missed it and it was decided after tge "final bell"

If he wasn't out (He was), he didn't do himself any favours.

ive seen guys go to sleep after a choke gets released, like the combination of exhaustion and too much blood coming back to the brain at once. coulda happened here too.

and that gif is really annoying, because it cuts it off at the wrong time

Also LOL @ blaming Goddard.

I'd blame the stupid referee who didn't see that Merab was out.
Yeah, he had his eyes open and was shaking his legs, both are things that can happen while you're out. I've seen many people go out with open eyes and shaking legs.
