So as of the past few months or so I've been getting a really sore lower back when kicking thai pads. It's normally like this for a few days, and in the days after when I lay off kicks, it still affects my punches. It stops me throwing solid hooks, particularly left, because of the pain of twisting into them. Even straight right hands sometimes hurt.
It only happens when I kick pads and throw power into my kicks, doesn't happen when I'm at karate and the kicks are "tippy tappy shit" Besides regular stretching and a good warm up before kicking which I do regularly, is there anything else anyone would recommend?

Sounds like weakness.........in your back muscles......go get your back looked at by a (insert local back specialist) then look at back exercises to strengthen your back.

if its soreness outside of normal soreness from training, it sounds like a possible injury. The only way to tell would be to get an MRI. Thanks to the American healthcare system, expect that MRI in about 9 months from now.

I'd agree with the weakness of your back muscles but also make sure your form is correct. Are you beginning your kicks with proper stance/push off from the foot upward or just winging your leg from the hip overusing the back? Make sure your pad holders are also helping, not hurting, by holding correctly. That, or as j123 stated, bang harder. :meow:
