Sorry other glove question...Boxing vs Mai Thai

Hello.

After spending lots of time on her looking at what gloves to get for pad/bag work I decided on some 14oz Fairtex BGV1-T, I have been using them for a few sessions and to be honest I am not too keen on them.

I like the size as they are not too big I don't find forming a fist in them that comfortable. Could it be due to lack of a grip bar? I only box so I don't need to be able to hold etc. What would an alternative glove be? Also given I weigh around 190lb if I start sparing I would use 16oz but for the bag/pads should I use smaller say 14 or even 12?

Any help as always appreciated!

I didn't realize Thai gloves didn't have the grip bar, lol.

The grip bar does help give you a central location to form a fist and it may be the reason why it's not comfortable.

I don't know much about the Thai brands other than that they are pretty good bang for your buck, but it all comes down to preference. To be honest if you spent $40 more you could get a pair of Casanovas, which are very, very good Mexican-style gloves that are apparently tanks that last forever but still have more than adequate padding.

If you're willing to go to $160 you can get a pair of Cletos, which will probably be the last gloves you'll need for a long time if you treat them right.

I've read that most of Ring 2 Cage's models are pretty good. Their C17s are supposed to be close to Winnings in terms of protection.

Though to be honest, if you're really new to boxing, you're probably better off getting two pairs of Title Classic Lace Ups for about $80 total and having a pair for sparring and a pair for bagwork. They're solidly built and don't break the bank.

Oh sorry didn't catch that.

I've been told anywhere between 12-16oz is good. 16oz helps you acclimate to the weight of sparring gloves, but 12-14 helps increase hand speed and allows you to focus more on technique. I've been that anything heavier than that is only for heavyweights and/or can cause you to develop bad habits because the extra weight can make your technique sloppier.

I'm in the camp that you should train in the gloves you fight with, sparring being the obvious exception. You should get used to the weight and feel of the gloves you're fighting in since gloves at a lighter weight are typically smaller and thus require a bit more accuracy.

I would suggest to use your handwraps to form the grip bar. I did that with my BGV1s and it was fine.

I use 14-16 oz for bag and 16oz for sparring. It's all a mather of preference.

Did you find that your F-Days needed to be broken in? I bought a pair of facebook marketplace for cheap, used them once on the pads and just wasnt a fan. The hand compartment is just way too cramped for me. Had the same issue with the BGV1s that I never broke in either.

I'm under the impression that since the F-Days aren't real leather they shouldnt need a break in period.

Wow I don't understand because mine had a broken in feel. They feel like old slippers lol. Some of the most comfortable gloves right out of the box I ever had.

BGV1 take a long time to soften tho. Padding is quit hard.

I have Stuck the BGV1 up for sale if I can get back something for them I will put the money towards something else. I got a 16oz fair of twins I am keeping for sparing if I ever do it but they are huge! I am thinking 12 or 14oz for bag and pads given I am crusier weight

I am tempted by a pair of 12oz Reyes any idea where I can find up to what size hands they will fit?

They typically fit medium to smaller hands. The only size chart they have on the website is by weight rather than hand size. I had a velcro pair and tried to wear them with a pair of Winning knuckle guards, but could not for the life of me get them into the hand compartment. I ended up peeling the screen printed logo on the back of the fist off by accident. I let friends with longer fingers try them on and they said they were uncomfortable. Hopefully someone else with more experience/tape measure can help you lol

I think my hands are not on the small side they are pretty fat and square. I brought some twins in 16oz but they are huge vs the fairtex 14oz so need something smaller for bags / pads but need to know they will fit

I'm a big supporter of Fairtex mate, I've used many different brands over the years and I keep coming back to Fairtex. that being said everyone is different. While I may love them you may dislike them. Hope for the best and I hope you enjoy your new gloves.

The Fairtex BVG9 arrived last week and so far I am really pleased with them, much better shape and feel compared to both the BGV1-T and Twins I had. The grip bar makes all the difference. Thanks for the advice and by ordering from Thailand I saved a fair few ££££ as well
