The Florida Project (2017)

Interesting to hear that your opinion has changed. Frankly, since you're the guy who is always talking about wanting to see films that don't feel like typical Hollywood cinema I was surprised you weren't more into it the first time around.

I wonder how much of that $2 million went to Defoe and how much the film would've cost to make if they had cast another unknown in his role instead.

Have you seen American Honey? I asked you about that earlier but I don't think you responded. If you liked The Florida Project, you'll probably also like American Honey. The styles and subject matter are very similar.

This will sound funky

I stopped looking at it as a movie and started looking at it as real life. This shit happens to many many people and thats how I was able to connect with it.

Before I was just watching a movie and I think I might not have realized the significance of the story

Another intresting tibit is that the first time I was on weed and the second time I was 100% sober. So I think I was able to get more emotionally invested in it and not just be stoned

But yeah man Its not a fun or happy feeling after watching this movie and that has stayed with me. I felt like the director was able to get me to feel the emotion he wanted me to feel.

Sean Baker is a very talented director and he does it with very very original subject matter. Try to find me a movie that is set in a hotel with these characters and these themes. I dont think you can

So yeah It took me 2 viewings but I became a fan

Cool, well I'm glad you liked it.

I would like to know more about the production. Like I said, if you cast an unknown in Defoe's role it seems like the biggest obstacle, financially, would be getting to use the motels. I wonder if those were abandoned motels that they paid to use or if they were operational.

Wouldn't bet the house on it but Defoe strikes me as the sort of actor who would take a massive pay cut to be in a movie that he 'believed' in, or to work with a director he respected

Could be. I'd really like to see a budget breakdown for this film though, because it really seems to me that if there was no big-name actor to soak up a lot of that budget that this film could've been made for $500,000 or less.

That's just my casual assessment, but who knows, maybe I'm missing something. Having seen the film, I'm just wondering where exactly that money went.

So what she takes "Swimsuit selfies" with the kid and sells them for rent money?

Nice
That wasn't my interpretation. My interpretation was that was her excuse to take her "escort" pics to put online to attract tricks without Moonee realizing it or questioning it. If she had involved the kid in that, she would have been busted for that too. But she was just busted for the prostitution. Just like Moonee's bath time was her excuse to get the tricks in and out without her seeing them or them seeing her.

The budget was $2 million. I'm sure Dafoe was the highest paid actor, although I'm also sure he took a bit of a discount because he knew it was a low-budget film and he believed in it artistically. The film was also successful financially at the box office and in other areas, so it's possible he took a pay cut upfront and had some kind of back-end deal. I also think the music licensing was a big part of the budget, there were dozens of licensed songs in the movie, including the master recording of "Celebration" by Kool and The Gang. I remember when Kevin Smith made Clerks, almost all of the budget was based on music licensing. Probably not as lopsided here, but still substantial.

What a weird premise for a movie...not sure I will give this one a go lol

The movie is pretty good

I think you should give it a chance if you are on the fence

Finally got to see this indie film. The acting was terrible to say the least. Maybe the Director couldn't hire professional actors because of the low budget. @BisexualMMA

i dont dig white trash idiocy, but i liked the movie
