Been thinking of making one for a while, but @Valkosen and @FeloniousMonk reminded me by talking about Thelonious Monk.

Post your favourite songs, artists etc.

Twas Miles Davis that got me into jazz, after hearing Coltrane's ascension first of all which almost put me off jazz for life haha. My favourite sort of jazz is hard bop, followed by fusion (mostly Miles electric stuff) but I like all sorts really. As always I'll start with a few classics:

Being that @Valkosen created a
Tool thread, some Sun Ra would
be appropriate. Tool, particularly,
Danny Carey (imo, their most
talented member) was hugely
influence by him.

& Of course, the Pharoah

Sun Ra is indeed the man, never really listened to Tool though I have to say.

& Of course, the Pharoah

Pharoah is one of my absolute favourites too, incredible song. This was the song that got me into his stuff:

and of course you can't go wrong with his album with Alice Coltrane:

(Entire album Out To Lunch is a masterpiece)

Yeah I love Eric Dolphy, Out to Lunch is amazing. I like some Ornette Coleman, Shape of Jazz to Come really but haven't heard that record there. Great song though, I dig it.

I love Alice.
"Turiya & ramakrishna"is one of my favorite jazz compositions ever.
Tool is worth a listen, even if for
their drumming, alone.Their album
"Lateralus" might be closest to
what might suit your taste. I can't
call it. I personally prefer their
1st album, which is just an
exceptional metal album

I've been listening to a lot of "doom jazz" recently, dark and slow. Bohren and Der Club of Gore, The Dale Cooper Quartet, The Kilimanjaro Dark Jazz Ensemble etc. I'll post some links when I have time.

Edit:
Dale Cooper Quartet

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble

Bohren and Der Club of Gore

Not sure what to make of that second one, very melancholy... Some band name though.
