'The Wire' - It gets better after the 1st season, right?

It isnt for everyone, but you should stick with it until it's one of the best things you've ever seen. It'll happen.

Don't listen to this guy. The first season is one of the best seasons of television I've ever seen. If you don't get it by then, you're wasting your time watching the rest.

the other thing with the Wire was that i enjoyed it even more the 2nd time through. that's when it went from being top 5 to my favorite.
weird thing is not only did the 2nd season grow on me, zigs wasn't half as annoying as i remembered. he even had a few funny scenes. we also get a few short cameos from people who get more developed and screen time in upcoming seasons. this show showed every aspect of the city, from the drug dealers to politics to the police to the media to the schools and to what was depicted in S2, the working man struggling thru life in the city. i got the 2nd season the 2nd time through the series. most of it went over my head the first watching, and probably most of the other people who rank it as the worst season (which was easily the last season for me).

I'm watching The Wire with my girlfriend and feeling envious she gets to see it for the first time.

Still bothered, huh? Lol.

Zigs goes from pain in the ass to tragic figure. Knowing that watching it a second time changes your perspective.

Meh, IMO the standout from Season 2, especially after subsequent viewings, is Frank.

The show is an allegory for society and how our problems have out grown our institutions ability to deals with them. This is why each season touches on a different one of societies institutions, police, government, schools, media and the ports/working class jobs.

The story is excellent but the real genius of the show is the story within the story.

Worst season is 2nd or 3rd I don't remember where it's about greeks in port. For me it's honestly was the most boring season. Season 1 was not that bad at all.

That reminds me of this scene, one of my favorites:

Well played, man. Another great scene that I almost forgot about, but was a part of what made the show so great. One other thing about the Rawls scene...

Was that a gay porn movie with one black gay blowing another black guy on a pool table was playing throughout that scene, LOL.

That's the 2nd season. Which I actually enjoyed, but yeah, a lot of people weren't feeling it as much, especially black people, or white people who were more into the black drug dealers/gangs aspect from season 1 and season 3.

I get what you're saying. But honestly, watching it while it was current, with the original 480i 4:3 formatted for your television, was probably the best way to see it for the first time. I really should re-watch the show, though. I've done that a little bit over the years, but I should re-watch the whole thing in HD, I guess.

Breaking Bad was a fun ride, but it was ultimately written by committee, and pandered it's way out of telling a proper story. By the end it was a great big ball of fan service. The Shield was BY FAR the better story. It created a believable character breaking bad over time, and was masterful in showing just how someone actually trying to do the right thing could gradually do more and more wrong things, to support the altruistic motive that doesn't really exist any more. People talk about character development in Walter White, it was virtually non-existent. He wasn't a person, he was a caricature. Worse still was Jessie. He went from stoned idiot to cunning strategist the second they decided to keep him on the show, it was a prime example of inconsistent writing. Breaking Bad kept writing itself into and out of corners, and it didn't do it very well. They literally created scenes with no idea how they were going to write beyond them, and it left some pretty gaping holes.

Um.... every series has more than one writer and an executive producer that approves the final drafts before filming.

Some new jackass writer of a show for its 4th season can't present a script for the 3rd episode in which everybody dies, and they have to film it.

"Oh fuck, the writer just stated everybody dies. I kinda wish we had some kind of committee or executive producer to tell him to fuck off so we could keep our jobs."

As for your critiques of BB, there's several I don't understand what you're referring to (Jessie being a criminal mastermind at any point within the series, writing into a corner, plot holes), but I get its your opinion and I respect you for stating them.

One of the reasons I made this thread is to get The Wire fans talking about the series among yourselves and judge if its something I could get into. Based on the responses, I'm probably going to call it quits after Season 1.

In the past, I watched GoT purely because there wasn't anything else on TV and it had high production values. Then it finally 'clicked' with me at the end of the third season. I rewatched the show multiple of times over, read the huge books, and read online theories... all for a show I was initially bored by.

On the other hand, I watched three season of The Sopranos, waiting to get 'hooked,' before calling it quits. Three entire seasons, because I heard many say it was the GOAT.

In closing, most shows has to hook me within an episode or two. For others that I've heard amazing things about I'll give more than just a few episodes because some shows have a learning curve. And then, there's those shows that just ain't my thing.

The Sopranos and The Wire, just ain't my thing.

The network had a huge hand in all the decisions made on Breaking Bad. It caused all kinds of problems. That's what I meant.

I gave you my reasons why I consider The Wire to be one of the best shows ever produced, as well as my thoughts on why some may not enjoy it. The Sopranos is also, in my opinion, at the very top of the heap.

However, no matter how well a show is made, there are going to people who aren't interested in the subject matter, or the style.

When you walk through the garden
You gotta watch your back
Well I beg your pardon
Walk the straight and narrow track
If you walk with Jesus
He's gonna save your soul
You gotta keep the devil
Way down in the hole
He's got the fire and the fury
At his command
Well you don't have to worry
If you hold on to Jesus' hand
We'll all be safe from Satan
When the thunder rolls
Just gotta help me keep the devil
Way down in the hole

I'm partial to the season 1 theme song myself. :)

So in the past I've tried to get into The Wire, and failed.

1st attempt - Quit after the 1st episode.

2nd attempt - Quit after the 6th episode.

So this week I've given it a 3rd attempt and just finished the 8th episode.... and I'm bored.

For those who praise The Wire as the best TV show ever, it gets better after the 1st season right? The 1st is setting the table and introducing characters and the themes of the cops/dealers?

Edit - I've heard spoilers throughout the years, so don't bother with the cute "Have you got to the point that ______ dies?"

It is mainly for white kids that never went to the ghetto to watch and learn what a ghetto might be like without having to drive around with their doors locked.

The Sopranos and The Wire, just ain't my thing.

There was an earlier crime series directed by the producer for the wire called Homicide life on the street. I felt it was far better and worth checking out if you haven't seen it.
